Put Off 2019 Elections, Rivers Clergy Tell FG

By Kelechi Esogwa-Amadi

Although preparations for the 2019 general elections are now in top gear, with political parties fine-tuning their strategies for the showdown, the federal government has been advised to cancel the exercise.

A clergy man form Rivers State, Rev Dr Sokari Soberekon, gave the advice during a chat with newsmen in Port Harcourt on Friday.

He advised the federal government to use the money meant for the 2019 elections to fund the nation’s healthcare system by providing all the necessary medical equipment and also take care of the doctors and nurses who save the lives of Nigerians who cannot afford to travel overseas for treatment.

The clergy man, who said that much money had been spent on arms and ammunition, called on the federal government to provide such medical facilities as stop watches, clocks and other equipment needed to conduct tests such as BP, so that nurses would not be using mobile phones to conduct such tests thereby exposing their patients to the harmful effects of radiation.

Dr Soberekon, who is the General Overseer of Christ Jesus Link Gospel Publishers Church and Senior Advocate of the Niger Delta, called on all political aspirants to support calls for restructuring of Nigeria while urging every political office holder from the President to the Councilors to stay for only two more years, during which they should work for the restructuring of the country, adding that their campaign slogans should now be 4+2 and not 4+4.

He added: “We have failed to heed Alhaji Waziri’s advice that politics should be played without bitterness and rancor. Politics is now played with bitterness and rancor, which is causing crises. That is why Prof. Attahiru Jega, the former INEC Chairman and a professor of political science, prophesied that there could be danger during the elections. We need restructuring of the country and a new constitution in order to move Nigeria forward.”
