The Governor of Rivers State, Barr Nyesom Wike, has promised to send 13 footballers from the 3 Rivers teams (Rivers United, Rivers Angels and Go Round FC of Omoku) to the Russia 2018 World Cup.

The Governor made this promise at the Government House Port Harcourt while Receiving the Rivers Sports community who held a solidarity rally and walk to congratulate him on his recent conferment of the African Power of Sports award by the AIPS, in Brussels.

He said the sponsoring of the Rivers players to the event, is to ensure that they gain first class experience, by watching the mundial live and not just on TV.

“I have told the Commissioner of sports that henceforth, anywhere that there is international competition, whether it is basketball, whether it is handball, whether it is wrestling, make sure that our people go there.

“Why will they go there? So that they can also learn and develop their talent and have experience.

“So we will kick-start with this world Cup. So I have told the Commissioner he should make sure 5 girls from Rivers Angels, 5 boys from Rivers United and 3 from Go Round FC will go to the world Cup, 2018 in Russia.

“At least let our players also go there and have a first class experience. Not only watching from television, they should watch it live.

“It is important that we must support whatever we have.

The rally saw representatives from the 23 local Government Areas of the state, Commissioners and Special Advisers to the Governor, SWAN President Honour Sirawo and NFF Technical Committee Chairman, Barrister Christopher Green.
