As Journalists in Rivers state join their counterparts all over the globe to commemorated the 2018 World Press Freedom Day, they have been urged to occupy their place as conscience of the society.
The Commissioner of Information and Communications Barr. Emmanuel Okah made the call during the celebration.
The Commissioner who was represented by the permanent secretary, Pastor Paulinus Nsirim, said Nigeria will be better if journalists stand up to their responsibilities.
“The foundation upon which Nigeria will grow depends on how the press mode opinions and sensitize the public”
In his lecture delivery, Director General, Bureau of Private Public Partner Rivers
State, Barr. Nimi Walson Jack, said the prime function in democracy is to protect
basic human rights as freedom of speech and access to information are essential elements for the full functioning of democracy and rule of law.
Also speaking, acting Chairman Nigeria Union of Journalists Rivers State Council, Uche Agbama, called on the state government to see journalists as partners in the development of the society and ensure the protection of journalist from all forms of intimidation and harassment in carrying out their duties.
Chairman of the occasion, Senator Lee Meaba, further said most problems in the society is as a result of corruption in the media especially by withholding facts and
evidence about the situation.
Meanwhile, Journalists in the state have been advised to verify their reportage before publication to avoid misinformation and misrepresentation of facts.
Rev. Father Bartholomew Uzoma of Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Kaduna Street, Port Harcourt stated this when he led some members of the Catholic Association of Media Practitioner for a briefing in Port Harcourt.
Father Uzuoma who is also the director of communication, described their sub-theme as ‘The
Truth, Shall Set You Free’ and urged all media practitioners and catholic media practitioners to take seriously the event to ensure fake news is flushed out in
the society for peace to reign.
