Taiwo joins RoPs

Nigerian defender Taye Taiwo has expressed delight following his move to Finnish top side Rovaniemi Palloseura.

The 32-year-old joined RoPS on a short-term contract deal that will see him represent the club till the end the current season.

“It’s exciting to return to a familiar league and nice to reunite with the RoPS coach Toni Koskela,” Taiwo told BBC Sport.

The veteran defender, who makes a return to Finland after departing Veikkausliiga side HJK in October 2016, stated that the decision to join Rovaniemi outfits was not a difficult one for him as he is already used to the terrain and shares memories with the club’s coach Koskela, with whom he worked with at HJK.

“We know each other from our time at HJK when he worked there, so it was not a difficult decision to come here.

“Since I left Finland, I’ve played in Switzerland and Sweden, but I feel good about this next step.”

Taiwo has scored 8 goals in 54 international appearances for Nigeria. His last appearance for the national team at a major tourney was at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
