Former Super Eagles defender Augustine Eguavoen has lauded Gernot Rohr’s decision to hand first-time call-ups to Nigeria’s CHAN 2018 stars and called for preference for NPFL players in subsequent squad selections.
Eguavoen, who expressed happiness with the inclusion of Gabriel Okechukwu and Stephen Eze in the Eagles’ 28-man squad list selected to prosecute friendly games against Poland and Serbia in March, stated his desire to see more NPFL players make the national team squad.
“I saw the list and it’s a good one, but I think there should be more players from the league (NPFL) in his squad,” the former Nigeria’s U-23 team coach told Complete Sports.
“Eze was a standout player from (African Nations Championship) CHAN, so he deserved his place.
“Gabriel Okechukwu is good striker and he posseses a certain unpredictability when playing which could be an asset relatively unknown, and he could spring surprises.
The 52-year-old also said Al Ahly striker Junior Ajayi’s invitation to the squad was well-deserved.
“Ajayi as well has proved his worth playing for Al Ahly in the continent, but let’s see how they will all fare.”
