Diobu vigilante group, also known as Diobu Avengers or Port Harcourt panthers have set April 1 as the deadline to withdraw their services within Diobu following move by Police to retrieve arms from vigilante in Rivers State.
The Vigilante group said that it will amount to suicide carrying out their activities within the Diobu area without arms.
It will be recalled that the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, ordered for various vigilante groups in the country to submit their arms to the police so as to checkmate general insecurity in the country.
But Diobu avengers said that the policy will only exacerbate general insecurity in the state and Diobu which in the time past was a hotbed for cultism and other vices.
The order by the police is coming at a time that the plans by Rivers State government to set up a statewide vigilante group known as the “neighborhood watch” to checkmate the activities of cultists and other perpetrators of crime in the state is facing heavy criticism especially from the state’s chapter of the APC which accused the governor of plans to equip a private army.
