The Defence For Human Rights And Democracy (DHRD) has asked the 23 local government chairmen in Rivers State to leave office immediately, adding that their tenures have expired. The position of the group was made known in a press statement signed by its Chairman, Clifford Solomon, and sent to our correspondent on Tuesday.

“The Defence For Human Rights And Democracy (DHRD) is worried over the turn of events in the 21 out of 23 Local Government Areas of Rivers State. “It’s a known fact that the tenure of the elected Chairmen and Councillors of the local government areas has expired.

“Upon this, DHRD is asking these former officials to immediately and respectfully vacate the secretariat and hand over official documents to the Head of Local Government Administration as directed by the Executive Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Joseph Fubara. “Any loss of lives and properties orchestrated by these local government councils will be sued and prosecuted in court.

“DHRD is closely monitoring events in all the affected LGAs,” the statement said.
