Equip Boy Child Project Mentors Boys in Rivers to Tackle Juvenile Crime

To address the rising incidents of juvenile crimes and instill fundamental societal values in young boys, a non-governmental organization known as the Equip Boy Child Project (EBCP) has introduced a mentorship program aimed at preparing boys for leadership roles in society.

The initiative, spearheaded by Patrick Uduma, seeks to tackle the pressing issues of juvenile delinquency and the lack of positive role models for young boys.

According to Uduma, the project stems from his personal experiences and a recognition that many boys lack proper mentorship. “You can realize that we have few programs that tailor and design to engineer the boys, but we want leadership, we want good husbands, leaders, good entrepreneurs, and valued people,” Uduma explained.

Targeting boys aged 9 to 20, the program focuses on this critical developmental phase to instill positive values and habits. Uduma highlighted one of the key challenges as gaining the trust of parents and convincing them to enroll their children in the initiative.

Despite initial hurdles, the project has recorded remarkable success, with 15 boys already graduating from the mentorship program. Uduma explained that the project adopts a coaching model, allowing small group participation to ensure focused, individualized attention. The six-month coaching phase is followed by continued engagement in general classes where the boys interact with peers.

Parents of the participants have praised the initiative for its transformative impact on their children. One parent, Lagha Charles, described the program as a “game-changer.” He shared his experience, saying: “My son is here today for the boy child project graduation. The project has been phenomenal, the change it has brought in the life of my son is amazing. My son tells me that he wants to be a channel of outreach and to be a blessing to others.”

Charles urged other parents to involve their sons in similar mentorship programs, emphasizing the growing need for boys to receive guidance. “In society, what you hear about is the girl child, but the boys are also in need of guidance and mentorship. Today, the boys are under peer pressure, joining cults at an early age and getting involved in unimaginable vices,” he added.

Denubari Benjamin, one of the program’s graduates, reflected on his personal growth, saying, “I am a lifesaver in a good place, the project has helped me very well. Before I was a boy who always liked to play, thinking that life is just a game, just like going with the flow. But now that I have got mentorship, I have learned more, I have learned about our core values and other aspects of life.”

The Equip Boy Child Project continues to make strides in shaping boys into responsible and productive members of society, serving as a beacon of hope in the fight against juvenile delinquency.

TCN Port Harcourt Battles Vandalism, Restores 20 Collapsed Towers on Ahoada-Yenagoa Line

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Port Harcourt region, has raised concerns over persistent attacks on its transmission towers. The company revealed it has secured four convictions and arrested six suspected vandals within its operational area.

This announcement came as TCN confirmed the successful repair and reconstruction of 20 vandalized towers along the Ahoada-Yenagoa 132KV transmission lines. The destruction of these towers had left most parts of Bayelsa State in darkness for four months.

Emmanuel Anyaegbulem, General Manager of TCN, Port Harcourt region, made this known during a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Tuesday. The event was organized to highlight the company’s key achievements over the past year.

Anyaegbulem explained that the Port Harcourt region covers six states—Rivers, Bayelsa, Imo, Abia, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River—within the country’s power transmission sub-sector.

“Unfortunately this year, we have a very serious challenge precisely on the 29th of July, 2024 we had this incident that lasted for about four months,” he said.

“That is the collapse of towers on the Ahoada-Yenagoa 132KV lines. And this is the only line that feeds Bayelsa State. It was a very big challenge to us almost from July till recently on November 30th when we were able to restore the lines.”

He further highlighted the activities of vandals, saying, “Some of these hoodlums became the situation in the country for all the channels we used to brace the tower, use machines and cut those channels and sell them as scrubs. To construct a tower is nothing less than N12 to N13 million as at the time it was done.”

Anyaegbulem described the extensive damage caused by the collapse: “With the slightest breeze, you see them collapsing. When they collapse they will pull the other ones adjacent and it will be a cascaded effect. That is exactly what happened on 29th July. And TCN lost about 20 towers between Ahoada (in Rivers State) and Yenagoa (in Bayelsa State).”

He emphasized the unprecedented scale of the incident, stating, “So it is one of the greatest challenges I actually experienced in my years of service because that is the first time we have had as many as 20 towers collapsing at a time.”

Anyaegbulem explained that the swampy terrain posed significant difficulties in mobilizing resources to restore the damaged infrastructure. He said, “We battled of course it was rough terrain, swampy areas, and all that. It took a lot of time and resources for TCN to mobilize contractors to start that. We have 330 and 132 lines. And these are the voltage levels at which the transmission operates.”

The TCN GM expressed relief that the issue had been resolved with the “Erecting and restringing of 20 vandalized towers along the Ahoada-Yenagoa 132KV lines.”

Regarding the arrests, he stated, “We ensure that anyone that is caught is handed over to the police or whoever and follow it up. So we have been able to prosecute four and six are in police custody now you know, going to court and all that.”

He urged local communities to safeguard power infrastructure and report any vandals to law enforcement agencies.

Highlighting other achievements, Anyaegbulem said the company had commissioned a 100MVA power transformer at the Port Harcourt main transmission substation and rehabilitated the 132/33KV switchyard.

He further noted, “The region took delivery of a 150 MVA 330/33KV power transformer at its Adiabo transmission substation under the Calabar sub-region. Delivery of 100/110MVA power transformer and accessories at Port Harcourt main transmission substation.”

He added that the Itu 132/33KV transmission substation was upgraded with “an additional 60MVA transformer and three outgoing feeders, digital control panels, circuit breakers, isolators and battery banks.”

Explaining TCN’s role, Anyaegbulem said, “Our job is to make sure that we are able to wield this power efficiently and effectively from the generating companies to load centers. And we do that using all these towers.”

He clarified that transmission companies focus on transporting power, while power distribution firms handle direct supply to consumers.

Governor Fubara made the pledge in Opobo Town during the inauguration of the 7km long Opobo Town Ring Road with three crossing bridges in Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area on Monday.

The road will strategically improve connectivity and accessibility within Opobo Town and other communities in the area.

The Governor pointed to how these various development strides, when actualised, will uplift Opobo Town and place it in a place of pride in the comity of other local government areas.

He said, “Other things are going to come. We intend to bring a higher institution to this place. We also will do more reclamation because our major problem here is land. We will also look for a way to make sure that we build more men; empower you so that you will not depend on me. Moreover, we will do all we can to make sure that we create the enabling environment where more people will be gainfully employed and empowered. That is the only way Opobo will grow.”

Commenting on the Opobo Ring Road project, Governor Fubara explained that it was flagged-off on May 28, 2023 by the immediate past administration but stressed that its design and execution was done by his administration to achieve the standard being celebrated.

Governor Fubara acknowledged the immense support given him by the people of the local government, and urged them to continue to stand with the government because God does not stop halfway when He begins to do anything.

He added, “This is a project that was conceived on the 28th of May, 2023. This project was flagged-off by the previous administration. We took over this project, redesigned this project, and gave it a standard that it has today. This is because it is a project that has to do with me. It is a project that my people will see, and it speaks for me. So, I am happy that I am here to inaugurate this project. It gives me so much joy.”

Governor further said: “Honestly, I know your problems. I know your faces, and I know your names. I know what we need. So, I will just say thank you for all the support. You stood by us when it mattered most, and I am happy that, that decision was not a mistake. We are still standing very strong and stronger every day.”

Governor Fubara appealed to the political leaders, traditional rulers and the generality of the people to continue to be peaceful as known of Opobo Kingdom.

He said: “So, it is not a mistake when people say Fubara is peaceful. Opobo/Nkoro is the only or most peaceful LGA. We are not saying we are crime-free, but the level of crime here is manageable. It hasn’t gotten to that level where we cannot control it. This is because of the understanding, the interrelationships we share, and we are all connected. So, I am begging you, continue to maintain this peace.”

Performing the inauguration, the special guest of honour and Governor of Zamfara State, Dr. Dauda Lawal, applauded Governor Fubara as a visionary leader who has championed development policies to better the lot of Rivers people, noting that such critical infrastructure like roads, particularly in rural communities as done by Governor Fubara, definitely promote socio-economic growth, enhance well-being of the people and facilitate progress.

The completion of this ambitious project is a clear demonstration of the vision and dedication of Rivers State Government, under the exemplary leadership of Governor Fubara, he said, adding, “It is a reflection of commitment of His Excellency to infrastructure development as well as improving the socio- economic conditions and well-being of the Rivers State.

“The Opobo Ring Road and Bridges will undoubtedly enhance connectivity, promote trade, facilitate access to essential services for the residents of this area, as well as the entire kingdom.”

Governor Lawal further said: “The benefit of creation of better connecting links will no doubt spur economic activities and open up new opportunities for communities in and outside of the state. The enhanced infrastructure will surely attract investment, boost tourism and improve the sense of pride and belonging among the people of Opobo”.

Providing the project description, Rivers State Commissioner for Works, Barrister Elloka Tasie-Amadi, explained the difficulties encountered in eventually achieving the road project because of the terrain, saying, “This road is 7km long. It is 7.3 meters wide and has three bridges, and we have about 4km length of drains.

“We had to fill many parts of this road to the average 5 meters high with imported materials from other locations outside Opobo due to the nature of our soil. The highest filled area, where we have one of the bridges, was about 10 meters high.”

Tasie-Amadi also said: “And for our design specifications, we filled sections with sharp sand, did 200 millimeters of sand cement stabilization, 150 millimeters of stone base, 50 millimeters binder course and 50m of wearing course.”

In his welcome address, Executive Chairman of Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area, Hon. Enyiada Cookey-Gam, described the inauguration of Opobo Town Ring Road as historic because it has changed the landscape in the Kingdom, emphasising that they have already owned the project and determined to collectively protect it so that it will serve their socio-economic needs for a long time.

Also speaking, Managing Director of Lubrik Construction Company, the firm that handled the project, Hadi Chehade, said they are delighted to be the firm to have handled the iconic road project that will strategically transform Opobo Town, and thanked Governor Fubara for trusting them with the responsibility and opportunity to offer such service to further his development agenda for the State.

Rivers State Begins Mangrove Restoration to Save Wetlands

Efforts to restore degraded wetlands in Rivers State are underway as the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF), in collaboration with other organizations, has launched a mangrove restoration initiative in Andoni Local Government Area. Funded by the Aspire Coronation Trust (ACT) Foundation, the project targets the rehabilitation of wetlands affected by the invasive Nipa palm (Nypa fruticans), which has displaced native mangroves and threatened biodiversity.

The project, which has already seen the planting of over 15,000 mangroves, is designed to revitalize the ecosystem while supporting the livelihoods of local communities. According to Shittu Usman, NCF’s Senior Officer for Climate Change and Nature-based Solutions, the mangrove restoration initiative is about more than just planting trees. It aims to rebuild the ecological balance critical for marine life, such as periwinkles, fish, and crabs, which sustain the local economy.

“This is a major step in reviving Andoni’s wetlands, which are vital for biodiversity and the livelihoods of the community,” Usman said at the launch of the Nature Sustainable Multipurpose Cooperative Society. He urged the community to utilize the cooperative, which has trained residents to transform Nipa palm into household items. Beneficiaries will receive financial support through stipends deposited in their cooperative accounts.

Usman noted that the newly planted mangroves are already germinating and will flourish within six months to a year, providing long-term ecological and economic benefits. “Mangroves are crucial for maintaining ecological balance. Their growth ensures the survival of countless species and will benefit the community for generations,” he said, adding that the project is already boosting periwinkle populations in some areas.

The Director of Forestry at the Rivers State Ministry of Agriculture, Mrs. Nkem Udoaya, applauded NCF’s efforts but highlighted the challenges posed by Nipa palm, which now dominates 25% of the Niger Delta wetlands. Initially introduced for its perceived benefits, Nipa palm has disrupted the mangrove ecosystem. However, its repurposing into crafts offers new economic opportunities for the community.

Local residents praised the initiative for equipping them with skills to remove invasive Nipa palm and create marketable products, while experts like Dr. Grace Alawa, Executive Director of Sustainable Action for Nature, warned of the need for urgency to prevent further colonization of the wetlands.

This restoration project not only addresses environmental damage but also creates sustainable economic opportunities for the Andoni community, marking a critical step in conserving Rivers State’s fragile ecosystem.

NOSDRA Urges Shell to Step Up Oil Spill Response as Emergency Evaluation Concludes

The Director-General of the National Oil Spillage Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), Engr. Chukwuemeka Woke has called on Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) to intensify efforts in mitigating the environmental impact of a recent oil spill from its Bonny Island facility in Rivers State.

Engr. Woke made this appeal during an emergency evaluation tour of the spill site, accompanied by senior NOSDRA officials. The inspection came after the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) reported a pipeline rupture at SPDC’s loading terminal on December 14, resulting in significant oil discharge that affected the Oyorokoto community in Andoni Local Government Area.

“Our presence here ahead of the Joint Investigation Visit underscores our commitment to ensuring readiness for containment strategies,” Woke stated. “It is imperative that we assess both the immediate measures and long-term plans to manage and remediate the spill’s effects.”

Woke commended SPDC for its initial containment actions while urging the company to intensify cleanup efforts and prevent further environmental degradation. He reaffirmed NOSDRA’s dual mandate of environmental stewardship and rapid response, citing the agency’s provisional approval for using dispersants to control the spill.

Reinforcing this stance, Dr. Sola Oladipo, NOSDRA’s Director of Planning, Policy Analysis, and Research, stressed the agency’s focus on safeguarding national interests by preventing shoreline breaches.

In response, SPDC’s Emergency Response Commander, Engr. Abatam Nwosu, reiterated the company’s commitment to environmental safety. “Our protocols are stringent, focusing first on human safety and environmental integrity. We’ve enacted multiple responsive actions, including containment via maritime vessels,” Nwosu explained.

Nwosu acknowledged the complexities of locating the exact spill source due to multiple offshore operations, hinting at possible leaks from other facilities, including an NNPC pipeline. “Pinpointing leak origins in open waters is complex, but we are working closely with NOSDRA, particularly in conducting source analysis,” he said.

SPDC assured the public that the spill affected only one of its three loading buoys, which has been isolated, emphasizing that oil exports from the terminal remain unaffected.

The evaluation visit concluded with NOSDRA and SPDC reinforcing their commitment to collaborative efforts aimed at bolstering immediate response measures and ensuring long-term environmental recovery. Mr. Ime Ekanem, Assistant Director and Port Harcourt Zonal Head, emphasized the importance of sustained cooperation in safeguarding Nigeria’s marine ecosystem.
