APP Calls on Governor Fubara to Contest 2027 Election on Its Platform

The Action Peoples Party (APP) in Rivers State has invited Governor Siminalayi Fubara to consider running for reelection on its platform in 2027.

Sunny Wokekoro, the Rivers State Chairman of APP, made this call on Saturday, clarifying that Fubara neither owns nor is currently a member of the party.

Wokekoro made these remarks during a meeting with Kenneth Atata, his predecessor, who paid a courtesy visit to the APP secretariat in Port Harcourt.

He emphasized the party’s intention to make a significant impact in the upcoming October 5 local government elections, stating that the APP is committed to transforming the political landscape in Rivers State.

Wokekoro, reflecting on his political journey, said, “I was a founding member of the PDP… The recent events in the country regarding the party’s administration, that party (PDP) is not supposed to house or to still retain any person who has morals, any person who has integrity should have left that party by now.”

He continued by expressing that many well-meaning individuals have left the PDP, including himself, and have joined APP. According to Wokekoro, “APP is the new destination.”

Addressing speculation regarding the governor’s affiliation with the APP, Wokekoro clarified, “There is one impression I must have to correct. Governor Siminalayi Fubara is not a member of our party.”

However, he added that the APP is open to recruiting individuals, including Governor Fubara, who could help strengthen the party for future elections.

He emphasized that the party would encourage people from various sectors of society, including women, students, market women, and politicians, to support this effort.

Uchenna Nnadi commended the previous leadership in Rivers State, acknowledging their efforts in bringing the party to prominence.

Nnadi remarked, “The way you people resigned to give birth to a new leadership in the interest of Rivers people, I want you to know that at the national headquarters, we celebrate you. The sacrifice you people made is uncommon.”

Rumors have circulated suggesting Fubara’s potential defection from the PDP to the APP, particularly after an explosion at the APP secretariat.

These rumors have been fueled by Fubara’s ongoing political feud with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike. However, Fubara, while hosting the PDP Board of Trustees, dismissed any claims of an imminent defection.

⁨Nigeria Was Never Meant To Exist, Burna Boy Laments

Nigerian music icon, Damini Ogulu, widely known as Burna Boy, recently delivered a candid critique of his home country, Nigeria, during an interview with Tidal.

In his remarks, the Grammy-winning artist reflected on the nation’s socio-political struggles and its diverse cultural composition, which, according to him, have hindered Nigeria’s development.

He attributed many of Nigeria’s challenges to a combination of poor governance and external factors. He also suggested that the nation’s once-celebrated cultural diversity has now become an impediment to its progress.

In the interview, Burna Boy delved into the history of Nigeria’s formation, calling it the product of a flawed business transaction engineered by the British.

He asserted that Nigeria was never meant to exist as a unified nation and described it as “nothing but the result of a bad business enterprise entered into by the British” and “the collateral damage of a business deal gone south.”

Burna Boy went on to explain how the area now recognized as Nigeria was originally referred to as the Niger Area. It was acquired by the Royal Niger Company, which later amalgamated the northern and southern regions without considering the people living in those areas.

“The area called Nigeria was first known as the Niger Area before the Royal Niger Company acquired it. After it was acquired, the Royal Niger Company decided to amalgamate the North and South as against running them as separate entities, and it was at this point that the country Nigeria was birthed,” Burna Boy explained.

According to him, this amalgamation disregarded the indigenous population, treating them as mere “collateral damage” in the process.

“The two entities that sold and bought the Niger Area, the people living there were nothing but collateral damage,” Burna Boy concluded.

S’ Court verdict: Rivers residents call on Sylva to work with Diri

By Mark Lenu

The Ijaw-speaking residents of Rivers State have called on the former Petroleum Minister, Timipre Sylva to work with Governor Douye Diri for the development of Bayelsa State.

The call came hours after the Supreme Court declared Diri, the winner of the 2023 governorship election in the State.

A cross-section of residents residing within the coastal communities of Rivers State told our correspondent that Sylva did what was constitutionally right to have pursued his governorship election dispute from the tribunal to the Supreme Court.

They said the decision of the apex court had put an end to the dispute arising from the result of the governorship election and that the right thing to do going forward is for Sylva to work with Diri in the interest of the state.

“Bayelsa is a state blessed with rich mineral and human resources, yet the level of development in the state is pitiable.

“The fault is not from the federal government but the prominent sons and daughters of Bayelsa State who do not like to put the interest of the state above personal interest.

“Same way Sylva would have wished Diri to work with him if he had won the guber election, he should likewise work with Diri for the development of the state,” the residents said.

In his message to the people of Bayelsa State, Diri said his government would bring in people who have what it takes to contribute to the development of the state and not those who will run it down.

He urged Bayelsans whose stock in trade was to pull others down to change their ways and think about building the state.

The governor was also quoted as saying: “My message is that of reconciliation as I will run an all-inclusive government. Let every one that is aggrieved sheathe their swords. Let us think about Bayelsa first and ourselves last. By this judgment, it is clear that the final hurdle has been cleared.”

RSIEC to screen LG poll candidates next week

By Mark Lenu

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission says it will commence the screening of candidates for the forthcoming LG election next week.

The Commission said this during an emergency meeting it held with all political party chairmen and secretaries in the state.

RSIEC also assured the public that the election would be held on October 5 as earlier scheduled.

A memo containing part of the resolutions reached at the meeting was made available to our correspondent.

It reads, “After an emergency meeting with all Chairmen and Secretaries of political parties in Rivers State by RSIEC, it was resolved as follows:

  1. “The October 5th Local Government Council election still holds.

  2. “The commission will commence screening of candidates by next week.”

The assurance given by RSIEC came amid skepticism that the growing political crisis in the state might force RSIEC to postpone the date of the election.

Currently, the two major political parties in the state and country, PDP and APC appear not to be ready for the election as their state internal crisis continues to persist.

The outcome of the election will end the reign of appointing a caretaker committee to run the affairs of local government councils in the state.

The Supreme Court had said it is illegal for local government not to be run by elected officials and ordered that funds should not be released to LGs that are being run by caretaker committees.

However, the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara appointed the current caretaker committees to run the 23 LGAs of the state before the apex court pronouncement on local government autonomy.

Fubara Allocates ₦2bn Monthly to Clear Pension, Implements New Minimum Wage

The Rivers State Government has announced plans to allocate ₦2 billion each month towards clearing the backlog of pensions and gratuities owed to retired civil servants.

The event, themed “Building Resilient Education for Increased Access to Inclusive Lifelong Quality and Relevant Learning in the Rivers State Civil Service,” served as a platform for the governor to outline key policies aimed at enhancing the welfare of civil servants.

This commitment was revealed by the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, during the 2024 Rivers State Civil Service Week in Port Harcourt.

Fubara explained that the monthly pension allocation had been increased from ₦1 billion to ₦2 billion, a move designed to expedite the payment of outstanding pensions and gratuities.

Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, the governor also pledged that Rivers State would be among the first to adopt the new minimum wage once it is approved by the Federal Government.

“As soon as the implementation modalities for the new minimum wage are released by the Federal Government, I reassure you that Rivers State will be one of the first states in the country to implement it,” he stated.

The governor emphasized the critical role of civil servants, stating, “We recognise that the civil service is the institutional memory of the government.

“No government can stand without its support…, you are the health professionals who care for our health, the teachers who train our children, judicial officers who ensure that there is justice, virtually every spectrum of life and governance, you are the people.”

In a bid to ensure the continuous development of the state, Fubara noted that his administration has reinstated the training of resident doctors and the recruitment of new medical personnel.

He also highlighted the hiring of staff for the Universal Basic Education system and Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, as well as the certification of ICT personnel.

Additionally, the governor mentioned that the state health insurance scheme has been established, and new permanent secretaries have been appointed, with vehicles provided to enhance their performance.

He further assured that the government would continue to take steps to improve the quality of life for civil servants.

“In realising this, I want you to note that to whom much is given, much is expected. I therefore charge you to live up to your call to duty,” he urged.

Fubara also encouraged civil servants to align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aiming to boost productivity and overall efficiency within the civil service.

The Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Victor Oko-Jumbo, congratulated civil servants on the occasion and called for dedication in building a more resilient and inclusive civil service, with a focus on education and continuous learning.

In addition, Professor Godwin Okon of the Rivers State University delivered a keynote address that explored the theme of the civil service week, highlighting the importance of lifelong learning and resilience within the civil service.

Meanwhile, the Head of Service, Dr. George Nwaeke, expressed gratitude to Governor Fubara for his commitment to an improved and efficient civil service.

Reacting to the revelation, some X (formerly Twitter) users expressed their opinion about the alleged theft revelation, stating that it was cruel to steal someone else’s idea and pledged support for Omah Lay.

An X user who goes by the name Luking_Tkd said, “Experience, they say, is the best teacher. Sharing your idea is like gambling, because you might get burned.

Another X user, Unwana Umoinwang, mentioned that people should be careful of who they share ideas with. The X user said, This is a reminder to be very careful of the people you tell your business to. Omo, this lesson entered me.”

APC’s Rivers Congresses Halted by Court Order

A Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has granted an order restraining the National Leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from conducting any congresses in the state. The order, issued by Justice Godwin O.Ollor, specifically bars the APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Umar-Ganduje, and the Secretary, Surajudeen Ajibola-Basiru, from conducting ward, local government, and state congresses scheduled for October 11, 16, and 26, 2024.

The court’s decision comes after an ex-parte motion was filed by Peter Ohochukwu and Hajia Ndidi-Chukwuma, who are suing on behalf of the Chief Emeka Beke-led executives of the party in the state. The motion sought to restrain the defendants, including the Inspector-General of Police, the Nigerian Police, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), from conducting or supervising any elections to make up the Rivers State executive committee of the APC.

Justice Ollor’s ruling also restrained the national leadership of the party from suspending the Chief Emeka Beke-led executives, whose tenure is set to expire in 2025. The court’s order will subsist pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice for interlocutory injunction, with the case adjourned to September 9, 2024.

River State Politics: The Wike-Clark Showdown

It is worth noting that this development is the latest in the ongoing leadership crisis within the Rivers State APC, which has seen the national leadership of the party attempt to dissolve the Chief Emeka Beke-led executive committee and replace it with a caretaker committee led by Tony Okocha. However, a previous court ruling had reinstated the Beke-led executive committee, and this latest decision further reinforces their position.

It bears mentioning that the APC in Rivers State has been embroiled in a bitter leadership dispute, with the national leadership of the party attempting to assert its authority over the state chapter. However, the courts have consistently ruled in favor of the Beke-led executive committee, leaving the national leadership’s plans in disarray.

Akwa Ibom community protests death of 23-year-old inside NNPC premises in Port Harcourt

By Tina Amanda

Some members of the Akwa Ibom community staged a protest on Friday 23 August, 2024, in response to the death of 23-year-old Asher Christopher Dan.

Asher died under unclear circumstances inside the Nigeria National Petroleum Company (NNPC) premises on Moscow Road, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Tuesday, August 20, 2024.

The protesters carried placards with inscriptions such as “We want an explanation on Asher’s death” and “Who killed Asher?” They first marched to the gate of the Rivers State Police Command headquarters at Moscow Road, where family representatives and community leaders were invited for a meeting with senior police officers.

According to reports, after meeting with police authorities, the protesters were informed that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID).

The group then proceeded to the NNPC headquarters, where they sealed the gates with native palm fronds and placed a picture of the deceased at the entrance before continuing to the SCIID. Despite the community’s calls for answers, no officials from NNPC came out to address the protesters.

King Albert, the coordinator for the Akwa Ibom community in Rivers State, in an interview with our Correspondent during the protest, expressed sadness and displeasure at the sudden death of Asher.

“Our boy, Asher Dan Christopher, came to work on the 20th of this month. We later received information that an incident had occurred at around 10 a.m., but it wasn’t until 4: p.m. that we learned he had fallen from a story building and died.”

“But the same people are telling us that they were not present when the incident happened, we saw the clothes of this young man on the fourth 4th floor while they are telling us that he fell from the 8th floor.

“Now these people in question up till date seize the corpse of the young man, refusing the family and the entire community of Akwa/Ibom people to see the corpse of this young man.

“So we are calling on the Commissioner of Police, the Rivers State Government, and all respected individuals of this state to come into this matter because it is a matter of Akwa/Ibom state and Rivers state.

“And is very important because the Akwa/Ibom State Government is aware of this and they will definitely come into this matter.

“We need justice, we need an autopsy, we need to see the corpse of this young man because they are telling us they will not allow us access to the corpse of this young man for fourteen days so that they we have access to do what they want to do.

“We need justice for Asher Christopher Dan”.

The circumstances surrounding Asher’s death remain unclear, and the community continues to demand answers and a thorough investigation.

On Thursday 22 August, 2024, the father of Christopher Dan had told Journalists in an interview that he was yet to see the corpse of his son.

The spokesperson for the Rivers State, Superintendent of Police(SP) Grace Iringe Koko had earlier confirmed the incident while adding that the investigation is ongoing.
