ASALGAns will experience best years after October 5 – Says aspirant

By Mark Lenu

The people of Asari-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State have been assured that they will experience best years after October 5 which implies after the forthcoming local government election in the state.

The politician who gave the assurance is a humanitarian philanthropist, Hon. Seineri Onengiyeofori George who is vying for the ward one councillorship seat in the LGA.

The aspirant had empowered countless youths, men, and women in the area before he decided to run for election in the area and had told his people that greater empowerment would come after his victory on October 5.

According to him, it is good to empower one’s people as I did for my people long before I thought of contesting an election and it pays off to help people.

“I have been helping my people in so many ways especially the needy, and the less privileged because of the deep love I have for my people.

“I never thought of running for political office, they urged me to contest this election, promising their overwhelming votes for me at the ballot.

“When the choice of the political party to use came up, they said any party I choose, they would still vote for me and after careful analysis of the various eligible political parties, the party to beat is Accord which I am using to contest.

“The reason for which I am in this race is to draw government closer to the people through effective legislative engagement with the executive to make sure my people keep experiencing the better life they deserve during and after my tenure as councilor when I win,” he said.

Despite attempts to frustrate the October 5 election date through litigations, the state electoral umpire, RSIEC had maintained that the election would commence as scheduled.

There are doubts if the two major political parties in the state and country, the PDP and the APC will do well in the poll as both parties are yet to resolve the internal conflicts draining the strength of the parties.

Super Eagles Release Squad List For AFCON Qualifiers

Newly appointed Super Eagles head coach, Bruno Labbadia has gotten to work immediately without wasting time and has announced his first squad selection, inviting 23 players, including star striker Victor Osimhen, to represent Nigeria in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda. As the Super Eagles prepare to take to the field once again, the team is gearing up for crucial 2025 AFCON qualification matches, scheduled to take place later this month.

This marks a significant milestone for Labbadia, who will be leading the team for the first time, and for the players, who will be vying for a spot in the prestigious continental tournament. The squad’s composition and Labbadia’s tactical approach will be closely watched as Nigeria seeks to secure victories against Benin Republic and Rwanda and take a step closer to qualifying for the 2025 AFCON.

The Super Eagles will be under the guidance of newly appointed head coach Bruno Labbadia, who was recently introduced by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). This marks a new era for the team, as Labbadia takes the reins and prepares to lead the squad into crucial Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification matches.

With his wealth of experience and tactical expertise, Labbadia is expected to bring a fresh perspective and new energy to the team, as they aim to secure victories and make a strong push for qualification. The NFF’s decision to appoint Labbadia has generated excitement and anticipation among fans, who are eager to see the team’s performance under his leadership.

In a significant move for his inaugural matches as head coach, Bruno Labbadia has opted to bring back several experienced players to the Super Eagles fold. Notably, the team has been bolstered by the return of captain William Ekong, versatile wing-back Olaoluwa Aina, and dynamic attackers Victor Osimhen and Taiwo Awoniyi.

These recalls are strategically timed ahead of the crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualification matches against Rwanda and Benin Republic scheduled for next month. By reuniting these key players, Labbadia aims to inject a mix of leadership, skill, and firepower into the team, thereby strengthening Nigeria’s bid for success in the upcoming qualifiers. This calculated move is expected to bring a sense of stability and continuity to the squad, as the Super Eagles seek to make a strong impression under their new coach.

During the crucial Matchdays 3 and 4 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign in June, the Super Eagles were severely depleted due to injuries to several key players. Notably, William Ekong, the standout performer at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and recipient of the tournament’s best player award, was forced to sit out the entire period, denying Nigeria his leadership and defensive prowess.

Additionally, the team missed the services of Olaoluwa Aina, Taiwo Awoniyi, and the reigning Africa Player of the Year, Victor Osimhen, who were all sidelined due to various injuries. This quartet’s absence significantly impacted the team’s chances, as their collective experience, skill, and goal-scoring threat were sorely missed during a critical phase of the qualifying competition. Their return to fitness and the squad is a welcome boost for new coach Bruno Labbadia as he prepares for the upcoming AFCON qualifiers.

The Super Eagles squad for the upcoming AFCON qualifiers comprises a balanced mix of 23 players, including three goalkeepers, seven defenders, six midfielders, and seven strikers. Notably, the goalkeeping trio features Stanley Nwabali, a standout performer at AFCON 2023. The team also welcomes back Taiwo Awoniyi, who has been absent since the 1-1 draw against Lesotho in November last year, marking his return to the squad after a lengthy hiatus. Additionally, Bendel Insurance’s Amas Obasogie has been recalled to the team.

All players are expected to report to Uyo on Monday, September 2nd, ahead of the crucial qualifiers. The Super Eagles will face the Benin Republic’s Cheetahs on Saturday, September 7th, at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, before traveling to Kigali to take on the Amavubi at the Amahoro Stadium on Tuesday, September 10th. This marks a critical period for the team as they seek to secure victories and advance in the AFCON qualification campaign.

PHED Denies Allegations of N4.3 Billion Misappropriation in Rivers State

By Tina Amanda

The Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) has strongly denied accusations of misappropriating N4.3 billion, labeling the claims as baseless and an attempt to tarnish the company’s leadership.

In an official statement, PHED addressed allegations circulating on social media, which accused the company’s Technical Partner, Engr. Matthew Edevbie, Board Chairman, Engr. Olice Kemenanabo, and other senior officials of financial misconduct.

The company highlighted that these claims aim to discredit individuals who played a pivotal role in removing corrupt officials from the management team earlier in April 2024.

“The Board and Management of PHED have been made aware of these unfounded allegations. These claims are nothing more than fabrications designed to undermine the credibility of key figures who have been instrumental in addressing past challenges.

“These claims suggest that N4.3 billion was misappropriated by Technical Partner Engr. Matthew Edevbie, Board Chairman Engr. Olice Kemenanabo, and other management staff.

“These accusations are entirely unfounded, malicious, and designed to undermine the credibility of the Chairman, Technical Partner, and key management personnel who have been instrumental in addressing past issues.”

PHED reiterated its commitment to transparency and maintaining the integrity of its leadership.

Governor Fubara Condemns Sea Pirate Attacks in Rivers State

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has condemned the ongoing attacks on boat operators and sea travelers by pirates along the state’s waterways, warning that his administration will no longer tolerate such criminal behavior.

He reassured the public of his government’s commitment to protecting the lives and property of all residents, both indigenous and non-indigenous, ensuring they can carry out their legitimate activities without fear.

Fubara made these remarks when he received a delegation from the Rivers Commercial District of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), who visited the Government House in Port Harcourt to draw attention to the challenges they face and seek immediate government intervention.

Represented by the Head of Rivers State Civil Service, George Nwaeke, the governor praised the union for fulfilling its civic duty by reporting the criminal activities affecting their business.

The governor reassuringly stated that his administration is committed to maintaining security across the state, noting that peace and the protection of lives and property are priorities.

“The security of human beings and their property is one singular agenda of the government that this governor has never joked with, and he is willing to do anything, even for the umpteenth time, to ensure that it is provided.

“Every person here is a community police. Whatever you see, you report, and whatever you think is not very right, you give information to the right places.”

Fubara addressed the union’s concerns, acknowledging the seriousness of the pirate attacks and urging residents to provide information on the criminals.

“Maybe, you are not sure that when you report, you will be safe. But you have to help the security agencies too with appropriate information.

“Bring information to the government, tell us about those people. This government does not condone bad habits. We do not harbor criminals in our midst,” the governor urged.

He further assured the delegation that his administration would do everything necessary to address the insecurity on the waterways. “We aim to totally destroy violence in Rivers State,” Fubara declared.

In his address, the Chairman of the MWUN Rivers Commercial District, Comrade Israel Waribo Pepple, expressed concern over the frequent pirate attacks on union members along the waterways, stating that these incidents have caused significant disruptions. “On Thursday, August 22, 2024, a boat sailing from Bonny to Port Harcourt was attacked by unknown gunmen, who took five passengers to an unknown destination,” Pepple revealed.

He also detailed other incidents, including the attack on a Bille boat and a workers’ boat coming from Bonny, where passengers were kidnapped and remain in captivity.

People criticized the security agencies for not doing enough to protect citizens, arguing that their focus is often on multinational oil companies rather than ordinary residents.

“Even if they [gunmen] are attacking ‘common men’ (passengers), the gunboats will not go for rescue. They would face the boat they are escorting because that is why they are paid for.

“We urge the Government to ensure the release of kidnapped passengers onboard our boats recently,” he pleaded.

People called on the government to take urgent action to protect boat operators and passengers and also appealed for financial support for those affected by the pirate attacks and the safe release of kidnapped passengers.

“I never liked the internet drama, but this whole thing put me out there. A lot of people have been dragging me; some have been calling me, ‘Ada, don’t talk. Let this die; don’t talk.’ But I go through a lot.

“I did not even know what depression was until this incident happened. I’m gradually losing my life. I’m regretting a lot of things. I don’t even know how to call people for jobs.”

Then my PM told me that is how they do it there—that a lot of people have been crossing and nothing is happening,” she explained.

The actress continues to seek prayers and support as she navigates the aftermath of this tragic event.
