Manchester United reportedly joins the race for Sanchez

Sky in Italy are reporting Manchester United want to sign Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal and have made contact with his representatives.

United are thought to be willing to consider involving midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan in a swap deal for the Chile international.

Sources said that United are ready to pay more than Manchester City for Sanchez and would give him a higher wage.

Sanchez, Philippe Coutinho and Lucas Moura were among the names discussed on the latest episode of Transfer Talk according to sources privy to the information.

City already have a financial package in place for Sanchez should he leave Arsenal in the summer when his contract expires.

The potential deal would earn Sanchez £13m a year in wages, with the 29-year-old receiving a £30m signing-on-fee.

City is also reported to have been keen on signing Sanchez but may wait until the summer to avoid upsetting the balance of the squad which boasts a 15-point lead at the top of the Premier League.

Pep Guardiola’s side made a £60m Deadline Day approach for Sanchez, however, the deal collapsed when Arsenal were unable to sign Thomas Lemar as a replacement from Monaco.

Hundreds Perish at Sea Trying to Reach Europe.

More than 80 refugees are feared to have drowned in the Mediterranean after their boat sand off the Libya cost.

The inflatable boat was carrying more than 100 people when it went down off the eastern city of Khoms on Tuesday, said Ayub Qasim, a spokesman for Libya’s coastguard. The boat was said to be carrying more than 100 people when it sank close to the city of Khoms on Tuesday, the Libya’s coast guard spokesman said.

17 survivors clinging to the boat’s wreckage were found by rescuers, Qasim said. Most of those on the boats came from African countries,” he said.

The UN’s International Organisation for Migration (IOM) describes the Mediterranean Sea as the world’s deadliest border. Last year, 3,116 people died in its waters while trying to cross from North Africa to Europe by sea, the agency said.

Libya, which was plunged into chaos since the 2011 removal of Muammar Gaddafi, has become the most common point of departure for refugees traveling by sea to Europe.

Italy, their main point of entry, is providing naval support to the Libyan coastguard to stem the flow of people.

“Libya’s coastguard is badly equipped and they are blaming the European Union for not providing enough resources to combat this crisis,” our correspondent said. “Officials here also worry that this crisis, if it escalates, could be used for international intervention in Libya.”

Over the weekend, 64 refugees lost their lives off of the coast of Libya in what is believed to be the first Mediterranean shipwreck of 2018.

The boat was carrying 150 people when it set off from the eastern town of Garbouli, according to Italy’s coastguard. Rescuers saved 86 people and recovered eight bodies.

Among the survivors was a three-year-old child who clung to her mother as she drowned, according to Doctors Without Borders (MSF).

“Survivors held on to the wreckage as they waited for a rescue with the bodies of those who didn’t make it, including family members, floating around them,” MSF said in a tweet.

Some 171,635 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea during that period. That figure is roughly a 50 percent drop from the previous year.

I Loved Watching Deco…. Cech

Arsenal FC number one goalkeeper, Peter Cech has said that among all the players he played with during his time at chelsea, he enjoyed watching Deco. In an interview with the Arsenal matchday programme, the Chelsea FC former goalkeeper picked out one player above the rest when asked who he most enjoyed watching.

‘At Chelsea I played with so many fantastic players, so to choose one is very hard,’ he said. ‘But one player I did love to watch was Deco.

‘It was absolutely amazing to watch him play and train with such ease and class. He could do anything you imagined with a football and it was fantastic.’

Deco spent only two years with the Blues after joining the London side from Barcelona and showed fleeting glimpses of his quality on the pitch, most notably with a stunning debut goal against Portsmouth and an acrobatic volley against Bolton Wanderers.

However, he was an understated member of the club’s Double-winning squad in 2009/10, with his ability to maintain possession a crucial factor in some of our biggest wins that season.

Mohamed Salah and Daniel Sturridge Trains Ahead of City Clash

Mohamed Salah and Daniel Sturridge took part in Liverpool’s training session on Wednesday ahead of this weekend’s Premier League clash with leaders Manchester City.

Salah, who is the Reds’ top scorer with 23 goals in all competitions this season, has missed the last two matches because of a groin problem.

Sturridge has not been involved in a game since the Champions League victory over Spartak Moscow on Dec. 6 having suffered with illness and injury.

Liverpool announced on their website on Wednesday that the pair had taken part in a session earlier in the day at Melwood.

Sunday’s encounter with City at Anfield will be fourth-placed Liverpool’s first match since the departure of Brazil playmaker Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona.

Coutinho signed a five-and-a-half-year contract with Barca on Monday as a transfer that could be worth up to £142 million to Liverpool was finalised.

Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino, his compatriot, on Wednesday posted a message on Instagram saying “Liverpool is no longer the same without” the “magical” Coutinho.

Accompanied by a picture of the two players in Liverpool shirts with arms around each other, the message said: “Liverpool is no longer the same without the magical man, I wish infinite success for you, that you enjoy life. And realise all your dreams brother!!

“God is always protecting you and the whole family!! It was an honour wizard [to] play this time together with you.”

Arsenal Chases Rafinha

Arsenal football club has indicated interest in signing Barcelona midfielder, Rafinha.

Sport claims the Gunners have approached the player with a view to moving this month amidst the arrival of Philippe Coutinho and the subsequent lack of opportunities the Brazilian will now likely have under Ernesto Valverde.

Celta Vigo and Inter Milan are also keen on the Rafinha, who is valued at an affordable €20m by the Blaugrana.

Given Arsenal’s poor performance at the semi-final goal-less draw at Stamford bridge on Wednesday night, it is expected that Arsenal will take advantage of the January transfer window to cover the gap.

The Nigeria Killings And Many Unanswered Questions

In the wee hours of the New Year day, tragedy struck in Tom-Atar and Umenge villages of Guma, a farming town in Benue; a state in the Northcentral region of Nigeria. Cattle herders of the Fulani ethnic extraction had laid sieges on the sleeping villages, slaughtering at least 50 persons in their sleep – women and children included – in a pattern that has of recent become a regular occurrence. Similar attack was launched on the town of Agatu in February 2016 where not less than 500 were massacred and over 7000 other persons displaced.

In a similar case of mindless bloodletting, 23 churchgoers who were on their way back from the New Year ‘Cross Over Service’ were gunned down in the town of Omoku in Rivers state by cult members loyal to a dreaded cultist and community leader Don Wanny. The army had raided Don Wanny’s residence precisely on November 2017 where shocking recoveries that include human skulls, bags of cannabis and military gears were made. Don Wanny had breached his own part of the agreement he signed with Rivers state government to lay down his arms during the much-publicized state Amnesty program.

Gory images of lifeless bodies of victims caught in the killings in Benue and Rivers – some of which, were children of only but few months old –  were circulated on different social media platforms raising public anger.

Twenty-four hours after the killings in both Benue and Rivers, thousands gathered in major Benue towns, especially the state capital, and sparked off huge protests and demonstrations, with a demand that government puts an end to the regularly occurring bloodletting. The army was sent to quell the protest and three persons were reportedly shot dead on the process.

The leader of the Miyetti Allah cattle breeders in Benue, Garus Gololo, admitted during a BBC interview that their members had carried out the attack because – according to him – the villagers had stolen about 1000 cows from their members while they were relocating from the state to neighbouring states due to the anti-grazing bill that was signed into law by the Benue State government.

The governor of Rivers state, obviously embarrassed by the public outcry for the perpetrators of the Omoku carnage to be brought to book, placed a 200 million Naira bounty for information leading to the arrest of the culprits. Don Wanny was shot dead few days later in Enugu during a combined raid on his hideout by the Department of Secret Service and the Army.

The question on the lips of discerning minds after seeing the ease with which Don Wanny was fished out and subsequently killed has remained one without a plausible answer! Why has there been no bounty placed on the heads of these murderous Fulani herdsmen that have killed thousands and displaced much more? Why is the so-called leader of the Miyetti Allah cattle breeders in Benue, Garus Gololo, still walking free after admitting publicly that his members had carried out the killings? Why has the government over the years, fail to bring a lasting solution to the Herdsmen-Farmers clashes?

How a government that rode to power promising to reduce all security challenges to the barest minimum sits with folded arms while lives and properties are lost due to clashes between cattle breeders and farmers is nothing but worrisome.

The continuous fights between Farmers and cattle breeders have always ended in rape, deaths and destruction of properties worth billions of Naira. The clashes have also become too frequent and too violent that special attention should be paid to it to avert future occurrences. The Buhari-led government has always found it comforting staying aloof as citizens die in preventable circumstances. The Buhari’s administration has demonstrated its unwillingness to put an end to these killings that have spiralled out control with the manner with which lip services has always been paid to Herdsmen-Famers clash.

Buhari swore to protect lives and properties. He should be bold and tactical enough in bringing to an end these unnecessary killings
