Upah Expresses Concerns Over Fuel Price Hikes, Warns Nigerians Could Pay ₦5,000 per Liter

The spokesperson of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Benson Upah voiced his concerns about the ongoing fuel scarcity and the sharp hike in petrol prices across Nigeria, warning that the situation may only worsen if corrective measures aren’t taken.

Upah pointed out that the recent fuel price increase contradicts the agreement made between the union and the federal government. He expressed his disappointment over the breach, noting the government’s failure to uphold its promises.

“I want to tell you something,” Upah remarked during an interview. “What this signals is that Nigerians have not seen the end yet. We may end up paying nothing less than ₦5,000 per liter for fuel in this country. We hope not to get there, but if we do, the decision will be left to Nigerians.”

Reflecting on prior discussions with the Federal Government concerning petrol prices and wages, Upah recalled that two options were proposed. The government suggested either raising the minimum wage to ₦250,000 while allowing petrol prices to skyrocket to ₦1,500 or ₦2,000 per liter or opting for a wage increase to ₦62,000 while maintaining the current fuel prices.

Upah expressed deep frustration over the latest price hike under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, describing it as a breach of trust between the government and its citizens.

Onyinyechi Mark Shatters World Record Twice to Secure Nigeria’s First Gold at Paris 2024 Paralympics

In a spectacular display of strength and determination, Onyinyechi Mark claimed Nigeria’s first gold medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, breaking her own world record twice in the women’s +61kg para-powerlifting category. Mark’s final lift of 150 kg secured her place atop the podium and etched her name in the record books.

The Minister of Sports Development, John Enoh, applauded Mark’s historic achievement, praising her for not only winning the gold but for raising the bar—literally and figuratively—by setting a new Para-Powerlifting world record.

“This performance is truly exceptional,” Senator Enoh said in his congratulatory message. “Today, you represented our great nation at the Paralympics, earning Nigeria’s first gold medal at the Games. You lifted 147 kg to break the Paralympic record, and then, with remarkable determination, you conquered 150 kg to set a new world record.”

The 23-year-old powerlifter began her gold-winning journey with a strong lift of 140 kg, which set the tone for her dominance in the competition. She then raised the stakes to 145 kg, surpassing the existing Paralympic record by 3 kg. Mark’s momentum continued as she lifted 147 kg to break her own world record and secure the gold medal.

In a stunning finale, just 10 minutes later, Mark returned to lift an astounding 150 kg, breaking her own record yet again and firmly establishing herself as a world champion.

“You have brought immense pride and joy to Nigerians,” Enoh added. “This victory is a testament to the resilient Nigerian spirit.”

China’s Jianjin Cui claimed silver with a lift of 140 kg, while Mexico’s Amalia Perez Vazquez took bronze with a lift of 135 kg.

Mark’s win comes on the heels of other strong performances by Team Nigeria at the Paralympics, including Esther Nworgu’s silver in the women’s 41 kg category and Eniola Bolaji’s bronze in Para badminton.

With more events still to come, Onyinyechi Mark’s gold medal has set a promising tone for Nigeria’s continued success at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.

NCYP calls for action as PMS price surge strains Nigerian economy

By Tina Amanda

The Northern Christian Youth Professionals (NCYP) has described the shift from the importation of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) to local production and supply in Nigeria, as a significant step that brought considerable challenges.

In a statement signed by NCYP Chairman, Isaac Abrak, he said the sharp increase in the pump price of PMS, soaring from ₦617 per liter to ₦855 and, in some instances, reaching ₦1,200, has placed undue hardship on the populace.

According to NCYP, the surge is particularly worrisome as it compounds the pressure on an already fragile economy undergoing restructuring for genuine development.

The organization commended the establishment of the Dangote Refinery as a notable achievement stemming from the Federal Government’s oil reforms. Noting the reforms aim to restore Nigeria’s capacity to refine PMS locally, reducing reliance on imports.

However, NCYP stressed that this milestone should not come at the expense of ordinary Nigerians, who have endured the removal of fuel subsidies as part of the national sacrifice to reform the economy. The organization expressed confidence that the current price surge was not the intended outcome of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bold decision to remove the subsidy.

They urged the President to take immediate action to address the situation.

They called for decisive changes within the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and other relevant sectors to ensure that the President’s campaign promise of improving life for all Nigerians is fulfilled.

Additionally, the group urged President Tinubu to appoint a substantive Minister of Petroleum. They noted that with his many responsibilities, including tackling insecurity and food shortages, the President needs a dedicated figure to manage the petroleum sector efficiently.

They explained that the partnership between the NNPCL and Dangote Refinery could undermine the refinery’s effectiveness while calling for greater transparency from the NNPCL as open communication, will help restore public trust in the organization.

Finally, NCYP called on Nigerians to remain calm, assuring that a reduction in PMS prices is expected soon as distribution from the Dangote Refinery continues to stabilize. The group remains committed to advocating for the welfare of all Nigerians and urges the government to prioritize the needs of the people during this transitional period.

Court Remands NURTW Leader Over Alleged Assault on Actor Lawori

A Chief Magistrate’s Court in Lagos has ordered the remand of Ganiyu Oyedepo, a prominent leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), popularly known as Koko Zaria. The court’s decision follows allegations that he assaulted veteran actor, Lawori.

The charges against Koko Zaria stem from an incident described as a threat to the actor’s life. Lawori had taken to social media to seek help, posting a video on Instagram in July, in which he detailed the alleged attack by Koko Zaria during the 2024 Idimu Day event on June 25.

Following the actor’s public plea, Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, responded via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, assuring the public that the case would be thoroughly investigated, and justice would be served.

On Thursday, August 5, 2024, Chief Magistrate B. Sonuga ordered Koko Zaria’s remand after he was arraigned on charges of conspiracy, assault causing harm, and conduct likely to disturb public peace.

Prosecutor Morufu Animashaun, a legal officer with the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (FCIID), told the court that Oyedepo conspired with others to assault the actor, inflicting injuries on his head with a bottle.

The charges, filed under sections 411, 173, and 168 (l) (d) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, alleged that on June 25, 2024, at Idimu, Lagos, Oyedepo and his associates carried out the attack, which led to Lawori sustaining head injuries. Specifically, Oyedepo is accused of unlawfully directing one of his associates, who is currently at large, to break a bottle and injure Lawori during the assault.

In response to the charges, Oyedepo denied all allegations and pleaded not guilty. His defense team, led by S. Bello and S. O. Ajetomobi, applied for bail, arguing that the offenses were bailable. They urged the court to grant bail under lenient conditions.

After hearing arguments from both sides, Chief Magistrate Sonuga granted bail to Oyedepo in the sum of N2 million, with two sureties. The sureties must be individuals of reputable character, provide evidence of livelihood, and reside within the court’s jurisdiction. Additionally, they are required to present evidence of tax payments for the past three years, and their addresses must be verified by the court.

While the defendant works on meeting the bail conditions, Chief Magistrate Sonuga ordered his remand in Nigerian Correctional Services (NCoS) custody. The case has been adjourned to October 29, 2024, for further mention.

No PDP Congress in Rivers, Wike Hosted Private Gathering – Ugochinyere

Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, a House of Representatives member representing the Ideato North South Federal Constituency, has criticized the recent activities in Rivers State, asserting that no legitimate Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Congress took place.

Ugochinyere accused the FCT minister, Nyesom Wike, of holding a private gathering under the guise of a party congress.

The lawmaker’s comments come after a series of PDP state congresses were held across the country, including Rivers, Benue, Katsina, and Kogi. These congresses have been marred by widespread complaints, with Rivers being particularly contentious due to a court order prohibiting the process.

Despite this, a congress was reportedly held in Rivers, which has led to a standoff between the National Working Committee (NWC) and the PDP Governors Forum. The latter insists that Governor Siminalayi Fubara remains the rightful leader of the PDP in Rivers State.

In a statement released on Saturday, Ugochinyere expressed his disdain for the event organized by Wike’s faction, calling it a “jamboree.”

According to him, “there is no PDP state Congress yet in Rivers state.”

Call Wike to order, Rivers CSO tells Tinubu

He further remarked, “Wike, out of desperation to look good before his dwindling followers who are losing confidence in him, held an owambe party and called it state Congress.”

The lawmaker recalled the interim court order, which in July halted the conduct of any PDP congresses in Rivers State. The order was issued by Justice Charles Wali of the Port Harcourt State High Court, effectively preventing any official party gatherings.

Ugochinyere argued that Wike’s event was in direct violation of this ruling, stating, “if people out of desperation gather to hold a family or kindred meeting from their hideout under the guise of Congress, you can only but pity and laugh at their political frolicking caused by joblessness and desperate quest for power.”

He further criticized some PDP members, claiming they collaborated with the All Progressives Congress (APC) to push their faction’s agenda.

He dismissed the entire event, adding, “The purported Congress is a nullity and an exercise in futility as there is still an existing valid order against any conduct of Congress in Rivers, and in view of that, the purported Congress will be set aside as you can’t put something on nothing.”

⁩ Denilson Igwe takes Legal Action Against Mark Angel Comedy

In what has become a riveting legal battle within Nigeria’s entertainment scene, comedian Denilson Igwe has taken legal action against his former collaborator Mark Angel, the mastermind behind the highly successful Mark Angel Comedy series. Igwe, one of the pioneering faces of the viral comedy skits, has accused Mark Angel of unjust enrichment, unfair talent exploitation, and other grievances, seeking a substantial $1.5 million in compensation.

Denilson Igwe was one of the co-founders and central figures in Mark Angel Comedy, a brand that gained global recognition through its short, humorous videos featuring relatable, everyday scenarios in Nigerian life. The comedy troupe, most notably boosted by the antics of child comedian Emmanuella, became a staple on YouTube, accumulating millions of views and fans worldwide.

Igwe’s contributions to the success of the platform cannot be overstated. He was not just an actor but also a producer and content creator who was integral to the formation and growth of the brand. However, behind the scenes, tensions were brewing as Igwe felt increasingly marginalized, alleging that his creative and financial contributions were being overlooked.

In the lawsuit filed by Igwe, he accuses Mark Angel of exploiting his talent without proper compensation. He alleges that despite his significant role in the comedy series’ success, he was not adequately remunerated or given his fair share of the profits. According to Igwe, while the Mark Angel Comedy empire flourished, he received only a fraction of what he was owed for his creative efforts.

Unjust enrichment is central to Igwe’s claims. He argues that Mark Angel benefited disproportionately from the partnership, reaping rewards while sidelining him. This legal term refers to a situation where one party profits at the expense of another without a fair basis, which Igwe believes perfectly describes his involvement in the comedy business.

Igwe’s legal counsel also points to what they describe as unfair talent exploitation. In the highly competitive world of digital content creation, individuals who are front-facing talents often find themselves at the mercy of larger, more powerful producers and owners of platforms. Igwe contends that his reputation and talent were heavily utilized to build the Mark Angel Comedy brand, yet his financial compensation never matched the value he added to the platform.

Denilson Igwe is seeking $1.5 million in compensation, a figure that represents what he perceives as his rightful share of the profits, royalties, and intellectual property from the time he worked with Mark Angel. This demand also includes claims for emotional distress, lost opportunities, and reputational damage.

The lawsuit has cast a spotlight on the often unspoken tensions that arise within creative collaborations, especially in the rapidly evolving entertainment industry. With content creators and digital entertainers becoming increasingly important in the media landscape, disputes over profit-sharing, intellectual property rights, and contractual obligations are bound to emerge.

At the time of writing, Mark Angel has yet to make an official public statement regarding the lawsuit. However, sources close to the comedian suggest that he might push back against the allegations, potentially framing the dispute as a misunderstanding of contractual agreements and revenue sharing.

This lawsuit could have wider implications for Nigeria’s entertainment industry, particularly in the fast-growing digital comedy space. It highlights the need for clearer contracts and fairer negotiations between talent and producers, ensuring that all parties involved in creating a brand benefit equitably from its success.

For upcoming content creators, this case serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of securing legal agreements that clearly outline financial expectations and intellectual property rights from the outset. As the industry continues to expand and evolve, such disputes may become more common unless frameworks are established to protect all stakeholders involved in creative collaborations.

The lawsuit between Denilson Igwe and Mark Angel underscores the complex nature of partnerships in the digital age, where success often leads to behind-the-scenes disputes over finances and ownership. As the case unfolds, the Nigerian entertainment community will undoubtedly be watching closely, recognizing that its outcome could reshape future relationships between talent and producers.

Denilson Igwe’s quest for justice may inspire others in the industry to reassess their contracts and partnerships, ensuring that creative efforts are adequately rewarded.

Ayra Starr Calls for Justice Over the Murder of FUNAAB Student, Idowu Christianah

Afrobeats sensation Ayra Starr has strongly condemned the tragic killing of Idowu Christianah, a 300-level student of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), calling for swift justice.

The incident has shocked many and reignited conversations about violence against women in Nigeria.

Christianah, who was undertaking her industrial training at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), was abducted while traveling between Ikorodu and Yaba in Lagos.

What started as a routine journey soon turned into a horrific crime, as she was kidnapped and later found to have been murdered by her abductor.

Ayra Starr, known not only for her music but also for speaking out on social issues, took to her X (formerly Twitter) platform to demand justice.

She wrote: “Stop killing us! Stop raping us! Women deserve better #JusticeForChristianah.”

The outrage online quickly turned into a movement. The hashtag #JusticeForChristianah began trending on Nigeria’s X platform, with over 105,000 posts at the time of this report.

Many Nigerians, both celebrities and citizens, joined in to demand justice for the young student and to raise awareness about the growing threat of violence against women in the country.

Investigations led to the arrest of the prime suspect, a 23-year-old man named Ayomide Adeleye, who was apprehended at his parents’ house in Ikorodu.

Police reportedly found significant evidence linking him to the crime, including Christianah’s phone and details of ransom transactions on his device.

In a statement, the Lagos State Police Command confirmed that the 9th Brigade of the Nigerian Army had handed over Adeleye to the authorities on September 5, 2024, at around 2:00 PM. “23-year-old Ayomide Adeleye has been handed over to @LagosPoliceNG by 9 Brigade @HQNigerianArmy,” read the official post on the police’s X account.

Ayra Starr’s post on X has further awoken mixed comments from both genders, with a majority of the men lamenting over the generalization of the content against them, yet supporting the #justiceforchristianah movement, and the women sending strong waves of support for Christianah and reigniting calls for justice for victims of feminine gender-based violence in Nigeria.

Petrol prices likely to remain high, says former IPMAN chairman

By Tina Amanda

Former Chairman of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) in Rivers State, Dr. Joseph Obele, has warned that petrol prices may remain high if marketers continue to source fuel from third parties at ₦980 per liter.

Obele made this statement in response to the recent surge in petrol pump prices, which have risen to ₦1,300 and above per liter.

He attributed the hike to NNPC’s importation debt, which has led to directives for major marketers and NNPC retail outlets to increase their pump prices.

“Among the three off-takers of NNPC, which are Major Marketers, Independent Marketers, and NNPC Retail Marketers, the least likely to make an arbitrary price increment is NNPC Retail Marketers. It is Practically impossible for NNPC Retail Marketers to adjust prices upward without authorization from the apex of NNPC.

“On like independent marketers or major, they can likely adjust upward arbitrarily because they are not controlled by a Corporate organization, but rather an association in which membership is not compulsory.

“The upward review experienced at all NNPC Retail filling stations on Tuesday 3 September 2024, was a clear indication of an unannounced new price regime for PMS.

“The recent hike in petrol prices is coming from the high importation cost of buying PMS from the international market.

“Following the unbearable cost of buying PMS from the international market which is now almost #1300 per litre.

“Arising from NNPC Importation debt, NNPC Limited then gave an upward review to all NNPC Retail outlets on Tuesday 3, 2024.

“The price of petrol might remain high if independent marketers continue to buy petrol from third parties at ₦980 per liter. NNPC Limited has not sold petrol directly to independent marketers for the past three months as the portal for independent marketers is shut down until this hour”.

Obele attributed NNPC’s denial of the PMS pump price increase to pressures coming from the Labour Union and major oil stakeholders.

“The NNPC’s subsequent denial of this directive was likely due to pressure from organized labor, NUPENG, IPMAN, and PETROAN emergency meeting evening at Abujua, which threatened to protest if the new prices were not reversed.

“There was a critical Stakeholders meeting ongoing at Abuja, in view of finding a possible solution because Nigerians can not bear any further hardship.

“Any further increment of PMS will affect the worrisome inflation index which will definitely result to price increment on all commodities in the market.

“I join Nigerians by calling on NNPC to step down any planned increment”.

Rivers schools lacking students because of poor learning environment

By Mark Lenu

A lot of government-owned secondary schools in Rivers State do not have students. The reason is largely attributed to the deteriorating learning environment.

One of the schools facing a poor learning environment in the state is CSS Edagberi/Betterland in Ahoada where students sit on bare floors to learn in a significantly small room.

The school was worst hit by the ravaging 2022 flood, leading to the destruction of its learning facilities, and the state government was said to have done nothing to revamp the poor learning condition of the school.

While appealing for government urgent intervention, the Principal of the school, Wisdom Owolo told our correspondent that the deteriorating state of the school facilities had driven a lot of students out of the school, adding that parents and guardians no longer want to admit their children and wards in the school.

“Before now, we used to record a large number of parents and guardians coming to register their children and wards but we don’t see them coming anymore.

“They all complained that our learning facilities are in a sorry state which is true. As I speak, we don’t have seats for students including other learning and teaching materials.

“Our staff rooms don’t have chairs and tables for staff and teachers. The building roof is bad including the toilet facilities. The poor state of our school environment can discourage teaching and learning.

“We have pleaded with the governments at the LG and state level as well as other well-meaning organizations to come to our aid, yet the government has done nothing to revamp the school.

“But, we will remain hopeful that sooner, the current administration led by Governor Siminalayi Fubara will remember us and renovate the school,” the principal said.

Chief Edwin Clark Urges Police to Arrest Minister Nyesom Wike Over Threats

Chief Edwin Clark, a prominent leader of the Ijaw nation, has called on the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to arrest the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike. Clark’s appeal follows Wike’s controversial remarks threatening to destabilize states governed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

At a press conference in Abuja, Clark expressed his concern over Wike’s statements made during a Port Harcourt event on August 31.

The remarks were directed at the PDP Governors’ Forum, warning them to stay out of his ongoing dispute with Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara. Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, was displeased with the PDP governors for supporting Fubara’s leadership in the state. He threatened to create unrest in PDP-controlled states if they interfered.

Clark condemned Wike’s comments, calling them “flagrant disrespect to President Bola Tinubu, and a threat to public peace.” According to Clark, Wike’s behavior violates several laws and constitutes a breach of the Nigerian Constitution.

He urged the police to take action, stating, “Wike has breached a number of laws, public laws, and so on. He has committed crimes, and for him to say that he will burn states belonging to PDP governors and so on, is treasonable.

“If you could, in the past, arrest Sowore for similar or less instigating threats against public peace and public officials… what are you waiting for to act in the case of Wike?” Clark questioned.

Despite these criticisms, Wike’s supporters under the banner of the Concerned Rivers Citizens for Good Governance, quickly defended him. In a statement signed by several prominent figures, including Chief Princewill Amadi and Welekwa Nyenwem, the group criticized Clark’s repeated attacks on Wike.

They argued that Clark’s outbursts were part of a deliberate effort to tarnish Wike’s reputation and undermine his influence.

“The incessant vituperations by Chief Edwin Clark… are very troubling and unbecoming of an elder statesman,” the group said. They also highlighted Wike’s contributions to the election of Siminalayi Fubara as governor, an achievement they believe Clark once supported.

Amid the controversy, South-South elders and chiefs have expressed concern over the escalating political tension in Rivers State. They urged Wike to step back and allow Governor Fubara to govern without interference.

Dr. Omubo Harry, chairman of the South-South Chiefs, Elders, and Opinion Leaders Association of Nigeria, appealed for peace, stating, “May I also humbly appeal to those of you who have served for eight years, your tenure is over.

“Let us give the young man to bring in his own ideas. What God has ordained, let no man put any asunder,” he declared.
