IYC Eastern Zone election postponed as Alhaji Asari intervened to halt crisis

By Mark Lenu

The IYC Eastern Zone election has been postponed by one week, following issues arising from clans and delegates’ inequality. The election date was later rescheduled for Saturday 14 September.

Back home, on Kalabari soil, the chairmanship position was zoned to Kalabari Kingdom which sparked up various overzealous aspirants who indicated their interest in contesting the election and if allowed, it would erupt crisis in the region.

In order to forestall the crisis in sight, the entire IYC Kalabari Se-Ikpangi remembered our revered leader, the Edi-Abali of Kalabari Kingdom, Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo Asari, and decided to resolve the choice of candidacy in the presence of Alhaji Asari.

Speaking with our correspondent, a former Chairman of IYC Kalabari Se-Ikpangi, Comrade Ibinabo Omoni Jack narrated how Alhaji Asari waded into the candidacy issue and got it resolved amicably.

In his words, Comrade Omoni Jack said: “It was unfortunate that the election did not hold on Saturday as earlier scheduled and has been postponed but be that as it may, Alabo Edi-Abali has tried so much in bringing peace to Kalabari Kingdom and the Eastern Zone at large.

“His intervention in this election has again given positive direction to IYC worldwide. The Eastern Zone chairmanship was zoned to Kalabari Kingdom and several persons showed interest.

“In the light of unity and oneness, the people of Kalabari then called for a meeting and asked our leader, the Edi-Abali to intervene. The aspirants were nominated and screened at the instance of our Edi-Abali and Comrade Prince Datolu Sukubo emerged as the preferred candidate by consensus.

“In his wisdom. our Edi-Abali used the following criteria to determine who our consensus candidate would be;

“(1) Academic potentiality

“(2) A non-cultist.

“(3) A competent and credible person who can stand and speak. and the world would listen.

“(4) Someone who can stand for the Ijaw nation at all times. Unlike the former IYC Kalabari clan chairman who was working for his masters, not the Ijaw nation he went ahead to use IYC flag to support the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike against our Ijaw brother, Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

“Our Edi-Abali who was the first deputy national president and second national president of IYC has always been fair from the onset by saying that only the Kalabaris and Okrikans should not dominate the Eastern Zone chairmanship because these two tribes have tremendous upper hands as far as the Eastern Zone is concerned.

“We noticed that some persons had created more clans for themselves to have more delegates than others for the election which led to the disagreements on Saturday before the election was postponed.

“We usually share our delegate activities among seven clans and we noticed that by virtue of having additional clans, some clans were having more delegates than others which is not fair in a delegate-driven election like this.

“Some persons further argued that we should use 20 clans which was not in our normal tradition as It has always been seven clans. So, the best decision to take was to postpone the election to enable us to settle the clan and delegate disputes first, then come back for the election.”

Davido Mocks Israel DMW’s Ex Wife, Responds To Critics

Popular Afrobeat musician, Davido, has shared his thoughts on the marital troubles of his logistics manager, Israel Afeare, also known as Israel DMW, suggesting that Israel’s estranged wife, Sheila Courage, may be regretting her decision to end their marriage.

Israel DMW and Sheila tied the knot in a traditional ceremony on October 20, 2022, in Benin City. However, their marriage fell apart just eight months later amid accusations of domestic violence and infidelity from both sides.

In a video posted on Instagram, Davido was seen speaking to Israel while aboard a private jet. The singer expressed his belief that Sheila might be feeling remorseful about the separation. Davido was heard saying, “I know she feeling bad men, you’re on top my nigga. We taking jets, we balling billions of dollars. Her loss!”

This remark sparked controversy online, with many, including Nigerian music producer Samklef, condemning Davido’s comments. Samklef criticized Davido for mocking Sheila and questioned the singer’s empathy and moral compass.

Samklef took to his official X (formerly Twitter) account to express his disapproval, saying that other prominent musicians like Wizkid and Burna Boy would never insult someone’s ex-wife in such a manner. He wrote, “Dear Davido, you have shown a lack of morals by calling Israel’s ex-wife a ‘bitch.’ How would you feel if someone called your wife, Chioma, the same?”

He further emphasized that it was not the first time for Israel, as Israel had flown in private jets before. “Happiness does not come from flying in a private jet. You need mentorship and counseling,” Samklef added.

Despite the backlash, Davido seemed unfazed by the criticism. In a response on his official X handle, he appeared to mock his critics, suggesting they would continue to follow his life regardless of their disapproval. He wrote, “If dem like make dem hate us, dem go still view our status.”

Rivers State Governor, Sim Fubara, Reaffirms Commitment to Economic Growth

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has reinforced his administration’s commitment to fostering a conducive environment for the growth of key sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, small and medium enterprises, and essential services. The governor emphasized that these sector are of great importance to positioning the state’s economy competitively.

Speaking during the inauguration of the maiden Governing Board of the Rivers State Investment Promotion Agency, Fubara urged the board members to focus on attracting genuine investors in critical sectors. This, he said, would drive the state’s progress towards self-sustainability.

The six-member board, inaugurated at the Government House in Port Harcourt, is chaired by Lawrence Anga, SAN, with Dr. Chamberlain Peterside as Director-General and Mrs. Tamunoibuemi Life-George serving as Secretary. Other members include Mr. Goodliffe Nmekini, Havey Ideozu, and Lenusikpugi Kpagih.

Fubara noted that Rivers State was once a leading economic hub, attracting numerous business interests. However, the rapid expansion and population growth were poorly managed, leaving the state economically disadvantaged. Reflecting on this, the governor expressed his commitment to restoring the state’s former economic stature.

“We might be celebrating that we have a significant allocation and improved Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), but there’s still much work to be done, especially through this agency,” the governor remarked.

He further stated the agency’s mission is to reassure former businesses that left Rivers State for various reasons that the state is ready to welcome them back. With its abundant natural resources, including oil and gas, Rivers State is well-positioned for growth.

Governor Fubara pointed to the potential revival of the Trans-Amadi Industrial Layout and the development of other key economic hubs such as Onne Town and the Ogba-Egbema gas hub, areas central to the promises made during his election campaign.

The governor stated the agency’s role in harnessing the state’s economic and human potential to transform Rivers into a competitive economic gateway. He stressed that Rivers State is now focused on serious business partnerships that benefit all parties sustainably.

“The goal is to develop Rivers State economically, so that even without federal allocation, we can sustain ourselves through our IGR,” Fubara stated. He acknowledged the challenges the board may face, particularly from those resistant to change, but urged the members to remain steadfast in their mission.

The governor urged the board to prioritize sectors such as agriculture and manufacturing, which have the potential to address unemployment and drive wealth creation in the state. He emphasized that the agency’s focus should not be limited to real estate but should include industries that promote production and employment.

In his acceptance speech, the Chairman of the Governing Board, Lawrence Anga, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and acknowledged the immense task ahead. He noted the governor’s foresight in selecting a team of distinguished and experienced individuals to carry out this vital mandate.

Anga concluded, “For every challenge, there is an opportunity, and what His Excellency has done is to tell us: go and look for those opportunities.”

Debate Grows Over Minimum Age for WASSCE and University Entry.

The Federal Government’s decision to set the minimum age for sitting the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and gaining admission to Nigerian universities at 18 has sparked significant debate. Critics argue that the policy ignores more pressing issues in the country’s educational system while stifling the progress of gifted students.

Professor Johnson Olaleru from the University of Lagos expressed concern over the timing and relevance of the new age requirement. He questioned why this matter is being prioritized when fundamental issues like inadequate infrastructure, poor teacher quality, and low educational standards remain unresolved. “This divisive issue should not be a priority over the many challenges in our educational system that the government has failed to address,” Olaleru said.

The decision is reportedly based on the now outdated 6-3-3-4 educational system, but Olaleru and other critics note that there is no constitutional basis for setting 18 as the minimum age for taking WASSCE. WASSCE is a regional examination conducted in several West African countries, and Nigeria’s imposition of an age restriction is viewed as an outlier.

One of the main concerns raised by critics is the impact on high-performing students. Under the new rule, all students—regardless of academic ability—would be required to wait until they are 18 to sit for the WASSCE and enter university. This means gifted students who excel at a younger age would be held back, preventing them from advancing at their own pace.

“This rule does not take into account exceptional students, prodigies, or highfliers who could contribute significantly to society if allowed to progress faster,” Olaleru explained. He noted that countries like the United States make special provisions for such students, allowing them to enter university at younger ages if they demonstrate the necessary academic and emotional maturity.

Proponents of the new age requirement argue that students need more time to develop emotionally and psychologically before entering the demands of higher education. However, Olaleru rejected this reasoning, calling it outdated and rooted in old developmental theories. He referenced the work of Jean Piaget, whose theory of cognitive development from 1936 suggested that individuals reach certain levels of maturity at specific ages. However, Olaleru argued that modern children, due to advancements in nutrition, exposure to technology, and educational resources, develop differently.

“Age is just a number,” Olaleru said. “The cognitive development of today’s children is influenced by several factors, and an arbitrary age limit ignores the individual differences among students.”

Furthermore, Olaleru emphasized that emotional maturity is not solely a function of age, pointing to the involvement of mature students in vices like cultism and poor academic performance. He argued that keeping students in secondary school longer would not necessarily result in better emotional or academic outcomes. “Many of the older students are involved in cultism and other vices, while younger students are often more focused and serious about their studies,” he said.

Instead of focusing on age restrictions, Olaleru believes the government should tackle deeper issues in Nigeria’s education system, starting from the primary school level. He advocated for science-based policies that address the roots of the problem, such as poor moral education, widespread indiscipline, and lack of proper teacher training. According to him, the current state of Nigeria’s education system demands urgent reform.

In conclusion, while the new age restriction has its defenders, critics like Professor Olaleru argue that it fails to address the country’s core educational challenges. Instead, they call for more thoughtful, research-backed policies that consider the diverse needs of Nigerian students and the broader societal factors affecting their development.

MOSOP urges Fubara to probe missing 300M dollars meant for OML 11

By Mark Lenu

The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People has urged Governor Siminalayi Fubara to probe the alleged missing 300 million dollars paid to the state government during the tenure of former Governor Nyesom Wike.

The money was said to have been gotten from an out-of-court settlement regarding a dispute that involved OML 11 which the state government was a party to. The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Wike has been accused of embezzling the money when he was serving the state as governor.

In a statement jointly signed by the President of MOSOP, Fegalo Nsuke, and Secretary General, Alex Akori, the body maintained that the alleged missing fund wants to spark protest, hence the need for the governor’s intervention.

“The attention of MOSOP has been drawn to the alleged missing $300 million paid to the Rivers State Government in an out-of-court settlement between the Rivers State Government and the NNPCL, during the previous administration, over Shell’s stakes in OML 11.

“MOSOP calls on the Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara to clarify to the public the status of the $300 million allegedly stolen under the previous administration and take legitimate actions against all those involved if any financial wrongdoing is uncovered.

“MOSOP notes that OML 11 straddles between Bonny to Andoni, Ndoki, and Oyigbo in Rivers State and stretches to Asa and Ndoki in Abia state.

“The demand for accountability over the alleged missing $300 million is therefore not just an Ogoni affair and the Ogoni people should not be sacrificed or put at risk for some personal, political, and pecuniary interests.

“It is the responsibility of the Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara to recover any missing funds from the coffers of the state,” MOSOP said.

Arewa Leader Defends Chief Edwin Clark, Condemns Anonymous Accusations

Saidu dismissed the group’s credibility, stating that Chief Clark is a highly respected and patriotic figure in Nigeria. He highlighted Clark’s significant contributions to the establishment of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) alongside Chief Harold Dappa-Biriye.

Expressing his disbelief, Saidu criticized the anonymous nature of the group, suggesting that their motives are politically driven and aimed at maligning Clark’s reputation. He emphasized that Clark’s longstanding commitment to national unity and his role in advocating for the NDDC are well-known.

Saidu clarified, “This group is nothing more than a faceless entity, likely sponsored by politicians with ulterior motives. Chief Clark is a dedicated nationalist who has consistently fought for the good of the country.”

He added, “As someone who has closely worked with Chief Clark, I can attest to his integrity and commitment. He has always stood on the side of truth and contributed to national unity.”

Saidu further criticized the group for their anonymity and lack of legitimacy, stating, “The so-called Arewa Youths for Peaceful Coexistence do not represent any genuine organization. Their attack on Chief Clark is baseless and unacceptable.”

He concluded by reaffirming Clark’s esteemed position and condemning the group’s attempt to tarnish his name.

Nigeria Customs Service Declares State of Emergency at Onne Port Over Security Breaches

In a decisive move against escalating security threats, Bashir Adeniyi, Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), has announced a state of emergency at Onne Port in Rivers State. This drastic measure comes in response to significant national security breaches linked to the port’s operations.

Addressing a press conference at the command’s Rivers warehouse on Wednesday, Adeniyi revealed that officers from Area 11 Command had recently intercepted “12 forty-foot containers loaded with illicit goods, valued at over N31 billion.”

The surge in the importation of dangerous and illegal goods through Onne Port has been described as an alarming trend. Adeniyi cited recent intelligence indicating that smugglers are exploiting the port’s trade facilitation efforts to undermine national security and public health.

“The focus of our operations has always been on supporting trade and economic development,” Adeniyi said. “However, the criminal elements exploiting our pro-trade stance to commit severe breaches have led us to declare a state of emergency at Onne Port.”

The emergency declaration follows the seizure of a substantial cache of arms and other illegal items. Adeniyi showcased the following significant interceptions:

-One container: 4,800 pairs of military/paramilitary camouflage rain boots and 67,320 pairs of rubber footwear, with a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N923,040,000.
-Three containers: 562,600 bottles of 100ml codeine cough syrup and 3,150 chilly cutters, with a DPV of N4,716,573,846.
– Another three containers: 380,000 bottles of codeine cough syrup, 24,480,000 tablets of Royal Tramadol Hydrochloride, and 5,350,000 tablets of Tapentadol and Carisoprodol, valued at N17,432,506,000.
-Five containers: 892,400 bottles of codeine cough syrup, 1,300,000 Really Extra Diclofenac tablets, and 7,250,000 Trodol Benzhexol tablets, with a DPV of N8,128,568,295.90.

The total value of the 12 containers amounts to N31,200,688,142. Adeniyi emphasized that these seizures underscore the command’s vigilance and the effectiveness of its intelligence network, bolstered by inter-agency collaboration.

In response to the ongoing threat, Adeniyi appealed to the public for assistance. “This is not just a customs issue; it’s a national security concern that affects every Nigerian,” he stated. “We urge all patriotic citizens to provide any intelligence they might have on these illegal activities. Even the smallest piece of information can prevent potential disasters.”

For the next three months, Onne Port will undergo enhanced inspection protocols. Adeniyi assured that the emergency measures are aimed at curbing illegal activities without impeding legitimate trade. Containers suspected of holding illicit goods will be opened if owners do not come forward.

The seized pharmaceuticals, including codeine and tramadol, will be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), while other items will be dealt with according to legal procedures.

“Our goal is to ensure a safe and secure environment for legitimate business activities,” Adeniyi affirmed. “The Nigeria Customs Service remains committed to safeguarding Nigerians’ health and safety. We will continue to strengthen our intelligence efforts, enhance our partnerships, and enforce the law against those who threaten our nation.”

Adeniyi also commended the officers for their relentless dedication in upholding customs regulations and protecting the nation from illicit trade.

Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde Reveals Reason for Long Absence from Acting

Popular Nollywood actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has shared the reasons behind her extended hiatus from the film industry. Taking her Instagram on Friday, the seasoned actress explained that her break was essential for relaxation, reflection, and recharging.

Having started her acting career at the tender age of 15, Omotola emphasized that the relentless pace of her career necessitated time off to rejuvenate her creative spirit. She highlighted the importance of taking breaks to maintain her passion and energy for her craft.

Omotola wrote, “I know many never understand why I take time off movies for a few years, then come back and do it again! Lol… I see fans asking when I’ll be back on screens, but when you’ve been working since you were 15, like I have… You’ll do good to Relax, Relive, Relearn and Recharge. Who understands & who’s following.”

The Niger Delta Development Commission in partnership with the Ministry of Niger Delta Development, is crafting an integrated master plan aimed at advancing the Niger Delta region.

At a two-day workshop on the “Harmonization of the Niger Delta Regional Development Strategy” for directors of the ministry and the NDDC, held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, NDDC Director of Planning, Research, and Statistics, Mr. Davies Okarevu, confirmed this initiative.

Okarevu explained that, in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive for the region’s development, the Niger Delta Regional Development Strategy (NDRDS) would refine existing frameworks like the Niger Delta Regional Development Master Plan, the Ministry of Niger Delta Action Plan, and regional plans by International Oil Companies (IOCs). This harmonized approach seeks to provide a cohesive vision for the area’s development.

In a statement signed by Seledi Thomson-Wakama, the NDDC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Okarevu emphasized that the workshop would enable participants to integrate the different regional plans into a unified, sustainable development blueprint for the Niger Delta. Another workshop involving a broader range of stakeholders—including economic planning commissioners, IOCs, traditional leaders, and community representatives—is set to follow.

Dr. Shuaib Belgore, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Niger Delta Development, represented by Mr. Paul Abia at the event, underscored the need for a unified development plan. He urged collaboration among participants to produce a strategy that could guide long-term progress in the region.

Lead consultant Dr. Atei Beredugo outlined seven critical pillars to be addressed to drive the Niger Delta’s development: finance, security, infrastructure, agriculture, oil and gas, governance, and economic growth. These areas, he noted, are essential to reducing poverty, fostering growth, and improving the quality of life across the region.

NDDC Director of Administration and Human Resources, Mr. Patrick Ekade, emphasized the workshop’s goal of ensuring that directors involved in the implementation of the master plan fully understand their roles. He expressed hope that once the strategy is finalized and approved by President Tinubu, it would accelerate development in the Niger Delta.

Mrs. Mary Nwaeke, Acting Director of the NDDC Abuja liaison office, voiced optimism about the project, stating that it offers stakeholders and development partners in the region a renewed direction and sense of purpose.
