Presidency Blames Labour Unions for Port Harcourt Refineries’ Decay, Rejects Human Rights Abuse Claims

The Presidency has attributed the current state of Nigeria’s refineries, including Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna, to the opposition by labour unions to the federal government’s plans to sell them to private investors, Aliko Dangote and Femi Otedola, in 2007.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, made this revelation while responding to claims of human rights abuse leveled against the present administration by the Trade Union Congress of the United Kingdom.

Notably, Onanuga condemned the labor unions for pursuing narrow interests that have stunted economic growth and development, compromising the well-being of workers and the poor.

He cited the example of the sale of Port-Harcourt and Kaduna Refineries to Bluestar Consortium, promoted by Dangote and Otedola, which was opposed by labour unions. Seventeen years later, the refineries remain comatose, despite gulping $25 billion in maintenance costs.

In contrast, Dangote has built the largest single-train refinery in the world, which was hailed by the same labor movement that opposed him earlier.

It is worth noting that Onanuga maintained that the administration will continue to promote the best economic interests of Nigerians, despite challenges, and pursue policies that expand national economic output and create prosperity.

It bears mentioning that he rejected claims of human rights abuse, stating that NLC President Joe Ajaero was stopped from traveling abroad due to his failure to honor a law enforcement agency’s invitation for an ongoing investigation.

Onanuga emphasized that no one is above the law in Nigeria and cited examples from the United States, where former President Donald Trump and President Biden’s son have been subjects of lawful investigations.

It is wotHe assured that the government recognizes the labor movement’s role in protecting its members’ interests but noted that labor often advances ideological positions that contradict economic realities.

Sahara Energy will not explore oil in Ogoni – MOSOP insists

By Mark Lenu

The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People has again insisted that the Ogonis will not allow Sahara Energy to explore crude on their land.

You recall that since the unjust killing of the vocal environmentalist, Ken Saro Wiwa and other Ogoni Leaders by the late Gen Sani Abacha in the 90s, oil exploration has not taken place in Ogoni.

Several attempts have been made by the Nigerian government and oil companies to resume oil exploration in Ogoniland but weren’t successful following their refusal to reach an agreement with the Ogoni people.

MOSOP also warned that any backdoor joint venture partnership between the NNPC and Sahara Energy will not be acceptable to the Ogoni people.

The president of MOSOP, Fegalo Nsuke made the position known at the end of a meeting with the leadership of the Council of Ogoni Leaders of Thought (COLT) at the MOSOP secretariat, Bori, Ogoni.

Nsuke warned against any maneuvers to foist Sahara Energy on Ogoni, advising the Nigerian Government against acts that can truncate ongoing reconciliatory efforts.

“We will strongly resist any move by the NNPC to force Sahara Energy on us by any means whatsoever. We have laid down our conditions for a peaceful resolution of the Ogoni issue. The government should look into those demands and we are ready to make the necessary compromises on mutually beneficial terms,” he said.

Nsuke called on the Nigerian Government to immediately halt Sahara Energy’s moves to enter into a joint venture agreement with the NNPC over OML 11 without the input and consideration of the position of MOSOP and the Ogoni people.

“Any attempt to foist Sahara Energy on Ogoni will only mean a deliberate plot to repress the Ogoni people. That will result in a civil crisis of monumental proportions, the rest of the Niger Delta will show solidarity and that could throw the entire region into a crisis which we do not want.

“We urge the Nigerian government to give peace a chance and accept discussions on the recommendations we have made in the interest of peace in our land. We do not want anything to take away our peace and the NNPC should spare us that trouble.

“We have proposed a pathway to address the Ogoni problem and that option should be given a chance. Our proposal calls for the operationalization of the Ogoni Development Authority (the ODA),” Nsuke said.

Rivers Governor Fubara Reassures Citizens of Impactful Projects

Rivers State Governor, Mr. Siminalayi Fubara, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering critical infrastructure projects that will have a direct and positive impact on the lives of citizens. This assurance came during an inspection tour of ongoing road projects in Opobo/Nkoro and Bori, Khana Local Government Areas, yesterday.

Notably accompanied by the Commissioner for Works, Elloka Tasie-Amadi, and Commissioner for Special Projects, Dr. Roland Obed-Whyte, Governor Fubara expressed satisfaction with the progress made on the various projects visited. He highlighted the significance of the road project linking Kalaibiama to Epellema, which will connect the previously inaccessible Epellema community to the mainland, thereby promoting development and reducing the risk of boat accidents.

It bears mentioning that the governor also reiterated his administration’s commitment to restoring Bori to its former glory as a cosmopolitan city, as envisioned by the state’s founding fathers. He assured the completion of the 13.3-kilometer internal roads project, which spans several streets in the town, within the next few months.

Governor Fubara emphasized that his administration is focused on delivering projects that will improve the lives of citizens, beyond just road infrastructure. He mentioned the ongoing hospital expansion project and other initiatives aimed at attracting businesses and creating job opportunities.

It is worth noting that the governor’s inspection tour was well-received by the communities visited, with the Amanyanabo of Opobo Kingdom, King Dandeson Jaja, and Senator John Mbata, welcoming him in Opobo. The people of Ogoni were also reassured of the governor’s commitment to completing the Bori internal roads project, which will bring significant relief and development to the area.

Governor Fubara Meets with Rivers Monarchs, Preaches Against Victimisation

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has cautioned traditional rulers against using their positions to victimize opponents and those who did not support their ascension to the throne. Instead, he urged them to be fathers and kings to all, without prejudice, and work with all sections of their subjects to promote peaceful coexistence, harmony, and enduring development.

Fubara made this call while presenting certificates of recognition and staff of office to two first-class traditional rulers, His Majesty, King Marcus Oduma Woyike, Nye Nwe-Ali Elele, Okinali/Elele-Alimini in Ikwerre Local Government Area, and His Majesty, King Ndamzi Nsirim, Nye Nwe-Eli Rumueme Kingdom in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, at Government House, Port Harcourt.

The governor advised the monarchs to discard feelings of animosity and resist the inclination to undo anybody, but rather courageously carry everybody along with a heart of forgiveness. He also challenged them to partner with the state government to ensure peace and accelerated development in the state and their communities.

Notably, Fubara emphasized that the recognition of the monarchs was an opportunity to play their role in supporting good governance in the state while protecting the interest of their people. He urged them to forgive those who may have offended them in the past and ensure that all stakeholders are carried along.

It is worth noting that the governor reminded the traditional rulers that their positions should be used to do good and serve the people selflessly, and assured them of his government’s support to enable them to succeed in carrying out their responsibilities.

It bears mentioning that the Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs and Community Development, Engr Charles Amadi, introduced the two traditional rulers to the Governor for the presentation of their certificates of recognition and staff of office, noting that they had successfully gone through the required traditional selection and installation processes.

Eguavoen Reverses Course, Remains as Super Eagles Coach

In a surprising twist, Augustine Eguavoen has backtracked on his earlier resignation announcement, confirming that he will remain as the interim coach of the Super Eagles. The news comes just days after the veteran tactician had stated his intention to step down following the team’s 0-0 draw against Rwanda in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The reversal of Eguavoen’s decision has caught many off guard. Just last week, the coach had expressed his desire to step aside, citing the need for a fresh perspective and the challenges of balancing his role as the NFF’s Technical Director with his responsibilities as the national team’s head coach.

However, in a recent statement, Eguavoen explained that he had reconsidered his decision after careful reflection and discussions with the NFF leadership. “I believe that I can still make a significant contribution to the Super Eagles,” he said. “I am committed to leading the team to success in the upcoming competitions.”

The NFF has welcomed Eguavoen’s decision, expressing their confidence in his ability to guide the team. “Augustine is a highly experienced and respected coach,” said a federation spokesperson. “We are pleased that he has agreed to continue in his role.”

Eguavoen’s reversal of course has raised questions about the reasons behind his initial resignation announcement. Some speculate that it may have been a strategic move to put pressure on the NFF to address certain issues within the team or to secure a more permanent coaching position.

Whatever the reasons, Eguavoen’s decision to remain as the Super Eagles coach will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the team’s preparations for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Davido Performs At Ethiopia’s New Year Celebration As They Crossed Over To 2017

Nigerian Afrobeat superstar Davido headlined Ethiopia’s New Year celebration on September 10, 2024, marking a significant moment in the country’s cultural calendar.

This celebration was unique because Ethiopia follows the Ethiopian calendar, which is about seven to eight years behind the widely-used Gregorian calendar. As of this date, Ethiopia has just entered the year 2017.

The event, which took place on Tuesday, saw Davido electrify the crowd with an energetic performance, entertaining fans with his collection of hit songs.

Ethiopia’s distinct calendar system, also known as the Ge’ez calendar, originates from ancient times and follows a timeline that significantly differs from the Gregorian calendar.

The Ethiopian calendar is seven to eight years behind due to variations in the calculation of historical dates such as the Annunciation. Another distinct feature of this calendar is that it divides the year into 13 months—12 months consisting of 30 days, with an additional month of 5 or 6 days, depending on whether it’s a leap year.

Governor Fubara Prioritizes Community Development Through Road Projects

The Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has emphasized that various critical infrastructure projects and social services being implemented across the state are designed to meet both the immediate and long-term needs of the people.

His administration, he stated, is committed to ensuring that governance remains people-centered, with a strong focus on enhancing the quality of life in a sustainable manner.

Fubara made these remarks during an inspection tour of several ongoing projects, including the 5.75-kilometre Kalaibiama-Epellema link road and bridge, the Opobo Town ring road in Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area, and the 13.3-kilometre internal roads project in Bori Town, located in Khana Local Government Area. These inspections were aimed at assessing the progress of these projects, which are crucial for local development.

In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, the governor outlined the significance of the projects, particularly the road linking Epellema and Kalaibiama.

He noted, “The first one (project) we visited was a road in Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area. It is a project that we strongly believe would link two communities together.

“We have a community called Epellema that we normally access through the river. So, we thought it wise that embarking on a project like this to connect Epellema to Kalaibiama will bring development, and also help in saving lives of our people from calamities occasioned by boat mishaps and other things.

“We also went into Opobo main town to look at the work ongoing on the Opobo ring road. We are very satisfied with what we saw, and we strongly believe that in the next three months, that project will be delivered,” Fubara stated.

Regarding the internal road project in Bori Town, the governor stressed that its completion would restore the town’s former glory and improve mobility. This, in turn, would enhance access to the Zonal Hospital, which is expected to be fully functional after the project’s completion.

“We are in Bori Town. We’ve been here before, if you remember when this project was somehow stalled. We spoke to the contractor and gave him a marching order, and after that, he came back to the site.

“We are here to see what is going on, and I strongly believe that he has done as we expected. The Bori internal road is a cluster of roads, not connected to one, but about 13.3 kilometres, scattered around different streets,” Fubara said.

The governor explained that the primary purpose of the project was to enhance accessibility for both the residents of Ogoni and visitors, further adding that it is part of his administration’s plan to rejuvenate older cities in the state. He assured the people of Bori that the project would be completed soon, restoring Bori’s status as a key city in the state.

“I can assure you that we are not going to limit development to only the roads. We have the hospital that we are working on, and we also intend to bring in other businesses that would create employment in Ogoniland,” he said.

Tems Dismisses Pregnancy Rumors, Reflects on Musical Influences

Multiple award-winning Nigerian singer and songwriter Temilade Openiyi, better known by her stage name Tems, has responded to rumors suggesting she was pregnant by American rapper, Future.

The speculation began when Tems attended Burberry’s Spring/Summer 2024 show during London Fashion Week last December.

She was seen wearing a black dress paired with a purple fluffy coat and matching heels. Observers claimed the way the dress hugged her body hinted at a possible pregnancy and began spreading rumors.

During a recent appearance on The Breakfast Club, Tems, in utter confusion, addressed the rumor and questioned why Future was the one linked to her supposed pregnancy.

“People just take the most controversial things. Because I was thinking, why am I pregnant for the future? Why Future? Because that’s the craziest,” she said.

Tems and Drake have worked together on two occasions. The first was on Drake’s song Fountains, and the second was as guest artist on Future’s Wait 4 U, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

She further pointed out Future’s well-known history, adding, “He has about five kids. And has a reputation of being a ladies’ man.”

In addition to addressing the rumors, Tems, when asked about artists who have influenced and motivated her throughout her career, had a list of reputable rap artists of which she cited were Lil Wayne, Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Ab-Soul, Andre 3000, and J. Cole.
