Nigeria leadership has failed the nation – Onyefuru

By Tina Amanda

A Labour Leader, Comrade Ikechukwu Onyefuru has called on the government to prioritize the enhancement of democratic policies.

This call to action comes amidst growing concerns about the integrity and effectiveness of current democratic systems.

Onyefuru who is the Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Rivers State, said there is a critical need for robust and transparent governance structures to ensure equitable and effective democratic outcomes for all citizens.

He expressed concern that the government has failed in its responsibilities to deliver the dividends of democracy to the citizenry.

He called on the government to cut down the cost of governance and focus more on strengthening democratic policies.

“You will agree with me that indeed we have failed as a democratic nation because Nigeria to date cannot boast of basic needs such as; electricity supply, good road infrastructure, pipe borne water, low income housing for the middle and lower class earners.

“If you do not have a process that is working how would you get dividends from the system? It is very simple, if you have a corrupt government that does not care for the people there is no way to move forward as a country.

“Right now there is hunger in the land, Nigerians can not afford basic food, every day more Nigerians are p into poverty. You can not separate democracy and good governance.

“The government has failed the people, the people are disappointed. Today, the dollar and naira exchange is over one thousand five hundred per dollar, and the pump price of petroleum products is something not affordable to the average Nigerian.

“How about medicals, Nigerian’s cannot afford the lowest of drugs, Nigerians are dying due to poor health facilities.

“We have failed as a country when we begin to look at the dividend that should come with democracy and when we benchmark ourselves with other countries in the world that practice democracy.

“If you have good government the citizens will be good, whereby you have bad leadership, corrupt leader there is no way you can have good followers. Even in a simple nuclear family, if you have a father and mother not behaving well naturally the chances of the children not behaving well is high.

“We expect government to do the needful by cutting down the cost of governance. You can not be growing big and expect the masses to be tightening their belt.

“Government should focus towards strengthening democratic policies, ensure democratic principles and policies are applied. It will bring about economic growth.

“Government should establish law and order, ensure it is respected across the board, reform judiciary, promote social justice”.

These are the basic things we expect the government to do until that is done, then we can say we are enjoying the dividends of democracy. The government should wake up to its responsibilities.

Onyefuru urged the government to stop prioritizing things that add no value or importance to the common man and focus its attention on revamping the nation’s refineries and building a strong security network.

“The nation’s refineries are not working, our security network is not functioning well due to lack of attention and poor working conditions.

“We should be ashamed of ourselves, look at the coastal highway the government wants to embark on, it means that we can not prioritize what is important to us as a country. why must they put such an amount of money into a project that does not have any bearing on our economy?

“Companies are winding down and leaving Nigeria. It is time the nation think what will attract investors and not for the investors we have be leaving the country and nobody cares”.

He further called on the federal government to emulate the steps of some state governors who have taken the bold steps to embark on human capital development.

“I want to commend some Governor that have taken the giant stride. Just recently the Governor of Rivers State launched the blue economy and the road map towards revamping the economy of the state that was plunging into a comatose.

“With the blueprint he has already deployed, we see strategic actions outlined to ensure that Rivers State attracts investors, and the internally generated revenue (IGR) of the state will continue to increase.

“Why can’t the country copy from Governor Siminalayi Fubara? The foundation he is building, human capital development these are the things we expect Nigeria to copy because these things are the dividends of democracy”.

The Labour Leader calls for electoral restructuring that will bring about a credible, transparent voting system.

“Nigeria remains one of the countries in the world where manual voting is being practiced even with all the high technology in the world.

“Last election trillions of naira were voted in yet we were unable to carry out the basic function of result transmission via the card reader machine.

“Nobody is asking questions about what happened at the last election, we have forgotten in a hurry. We became a laughing stock before the whole world.

“Let INEC be restructured, let the commission become a body that can indeed give us a credible election acceptable globally.

“Look at what is happening in South Africa’s ongoing election, everybody is transparent, if you win, you win, if you do not win you wait for tomorrow that is what we expect in Nigeria”.

The Institute of Chartered Mediators and Counciliators as well as the Nigerian Bar Association have asked their members to avoid the court premises in Rivers State. The duo groups released the advice because of the looming tension across the 23 LGAs of the state.

The tension was said to have emanated from the refusal of the local government chairmen to vacate office after their tenures got expired on Monday, June 17, 2024. The advice was contained in two separate short statements issued and signed by the Port Harcourt branch chairman and secretary of both groups and read as follows:

We storm LG secretariats in Kalabari to prevent looting – Says ex IYC chair

By Mark Lenu

Former IYC chairman of Kalabari Se-ikpangi, Prince Sobrasua Odum has given the reason some youths occupied the three Kalabari LG councils of Akuku-Toru, Asari-Toru, and Degema respectively.

It could be recalled that scores of youths have been sighted at the secretariats of the three LGAs since Monday, June 17 till date as they continue to demand for Rowland Sekibo, Michael Williams, and Onengiye-Ofori George whose tenures as chairmen had elapsed to vacate office immediately.

Speaking with our correspondent, Comrade Sobrasua said the youths decided to tarry at the entrance gates of the three council secretariats in order to prevent the chairmen and their cronies from looting the properties that belong to the LGAs.

His words: “We are Ijaw people and are here to ensure that there is no breakdown of law and order. The tenure of the local government chairmen has elapsed and we don’t want them to come and loot the councils.

“Governor Sim Fubara is an Ijaw man and this is our turn. So, why can’t the Kalabari LG chairmen give their support to Sim Fubara?

“We supported Nyesom Wike for eight years, when he was a governor without rancor, nor problem but the so-called Kalabari LG chairmen came and wanted to betray the Kalabari people in governor Fubara’s regime and the youths have risen up to say no that enough is enough. and that is why we are here.

“We are not here for any personal hatred but we are here for justice. The court has said that there is no elongation of council chairmen’s tenure. “We will remain here at the secretariats until the new appointees of the governor take over the council secretariats.”

Tensions rise in Rivers as suspected cultists shoot man in Ahoada

By Tina Amanda

Suspected cultists on Tuesday night, June 18, 2024, shot Endwell Awunze along Ula-Pata in Ahoada town, heightening tensions as the state grapples with increasing unrest.

According to the report, Awunze who is suspected to be a whistle-blower against cultism and other violent crime in the Okporowo community in Ahoada East LGA may have been on the trail before his untimely death yesterday night.

A source revealed that Awunze left the venue of protest opposite Ahoada East Council where they were protesting against the tenure elongation of the Local Government Chairman and boarded a motorcycle at about 7 pm.

The source disclosed that as the Motorbike was navigating along Ula-Pata road, three gunmen who had already laid ambush opened fire on Awunze who died instantly while the rider of the motorbike sustained gunshot injuries and was rushed to hospital where he is receiving treatment.

As of 7 am on Wednesday, 19 June 2024, the corpse of Awunze was still at the scene of the crime.

Awunze until his death, was an oil pipeline surveillance worker.

Meanwhile, the National Coordinator for the Centre for Basic Rights Protection And Accountability Campaign, a human rights organization Prince Wiro, has expressed worry at the negative effects that the political crisis may cause in Rivers State.

“I am worried that cultists and other criminal elements may take advantage of the chaotic situation in the state to begin to perpetrate evil. I urge the Political gladiators in the state to carry out their activities within the confines of the law as we hear that some mischievous politicians are recruiting all manner of violent personalities to achieve their aim.

“I equally call on the Police and other relevant security agencies in the state to double their effort to arrest the security challenges that may arise as a result of the political crisis”.

Reacting to the incident, the Spokesperson for the River State Police Command, SP Iringe Koko, confirmed the incident. She said Endwell was killed by unknown gunmen adding that investigation is ongoing.

Fund TB Activities to Stop Spread of Disease, CSO Tells Govt

By Tina Amanda

A call to action from the civil society group, Strengthening Civic Advocacy and Local Engagement (SCALE) project, has stressed the urgent need in the fight against tuberculosis (TB).

SCALE is urging governments at all levels, corporate bodies, stakeholders, and individuals to actively support activities related to TB care.

Speaking during a Private Sector Engagement Forum on the Nigeria Tuberculosis (TB) response, organized by Palladium under SCALE project, in partnership with the National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Program (NTBLCP) Port Harcourt, Director Public Health, Cross Rivers State, Dr Jonah Bassey Ofo, said Tuberculosis is the second leading infectious killer globally after COVID-19 (above HIV and AIDS).

“Nigeria ranks first in Africa and sixth globally accounting for over 70% of the global gap in TB case detection and notification.

“Tuberculosis is a highly infectious disease it affects lots of people in the country and the disease is airborne, it is transmitted from person to person. When an individual inhales air from someone suffering from TB the person could get infected with the bacteria that causes tuberculosis.

“When an individual is infected after some time the person will come down with TB disease. In Nigeria lots of people be it children, women, and men get infected with the disease every year.

“It is a very big public health issue to us as health care providers. Funding activities that have to do with TB care are mostly donor-dependent, foreign donors make funds available for us to diagnose and treat patients.

“Out of Nigeria’s USS 388 million annual budget for TB, 6% is domestic-funded, 24% is donor-funded while 70% remains unfunded.

“Presently the donors are getting tired and there is a need for us as a country, as a people to see how we will live up to our responsibilities by making funds available for TB diagnosis and management.

Dr Stella Makpu, of the National Tuberculosis, Leprosy and Buruli Ulcer Control Program Abuja, said ninety percent of humans have in them the germ that causes tuberculosis.

“TB is in the air you find it anywhere if somebody that has TB coughs, sneezes, or talks the person releases an aerosol that contains the organism a nearby person can always breathe it in. It is risky to inhale air from TB patient q

“Ninety-something percent of the populace has that germ in us, because we do not have a predisposed immune system, so somewhere in the lungs they are quiet. But, if a person gets predisposed by contracting HIV or some disease like diabetes it could bring down the immune system and the TB will surface.

“gone are the days we sit in health facilities and allow patients to come to hospital, especially patients with TB. Now we are taking further steps to go the community and look out for them.

“That is why the SCALE project has decided to train the community and civil society groups. Now we reached out to the media as well as the private sector to help mobilize resources for treating TB patients and getting them diagnosed

“It is good we get them diagnosed on time to break of transmission, once that is done we will be able to curtail TB spread,. TB diagnosis and treatment is free”.

2 dead as political crisis in Rivers escalates with fatal shootings

By Tina Amanda

The political crisis in Rivers State took a dangerous turn on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, as unidentified assailants shot and killed a police officer and a vigilante personnel in Eberi, Omuma Local Government Area of the state.

We gathered that trouble started when some youth came to the secretariat to demand the Council Chairman not to be allowed into the secretariat following the expiration of his tenure on Monday June 17, 2024, and subsequent directive by the Rivers State Governor for Head of Local Government Administrations to take over the Councils pending further directive.

Report had it that some hoodlums claiming to be supporters of the two factional political groups in the state had engaged themselves in heavy fight causing panic and pandemonium in the community.

We cannot categorically establish how the Police officer and vigilante personnel at the scene was caught by bullet leading to their death.

A video which surfaced on internet hours after the shooting at Omuma Council secretariat showed one faction of the group involved in the crisis claiming to have taken over the Council while singing praise of a particular political leader.

Our Correspondent report that the Nigeria Police has taken over Obio/Akpor Council secretariat earlier seized by one of the Political factions in the state.other LGAs like Khana, Degema, Asari-Toru, Port Harcourt, Eleme, Ogu-Bolo etc were taken over by Youth said to be opposing the tenure elongation of the Local Government Chairmen

Human Rights Group Warns Ex-Council Members Against Crisis in Rivers

Pic 1 Members of Rivers State civil society organisations protest in Port Harcourt

An international human rights organization, the Human Rights Advocacy Network (HRAN) has issued a strong warning to outgoing local government chairmen in Rivers State, sternly urging them to avoid actions that could lead to crisis. The group also called on security agencies to be proactive in maintaining law and order.

The chairmen’s tenure ended on June 17, 2024, but some, like Chidi Lloyd of Emohua Local Council, have refused to vacate their offices, referring to an alleged six-month tenure extension granted by the state assembly. However, HRAN clarified that this extension was nullified by a competent court, as it was inconsistent with the 1999 constitution and state laws.

“We read of the threats… to breach the peace and harmony in Rivers State by the immediate past local government chairmen… whose tenure expired by 12 noon today, June 17, 2024,” HRAN said in a statement. “The judgment of the Rivers State High Court which nullified the extension of the tenure of local government chairmen in Rivers State is yet to be set aside.”

The group apprised the former chairmen that their refusal to leave office is unlawful and treasonable, posing a direct threat to peace and stability. “The attempt to extend the tenure was unlawful and violated the officials’ oath of office,” HRAN pointed out.

HRAN encouraged security agencies to monitor the situation closely to prevent potential breaches of the law. “We call on security agencies to monitor closely, all 23 local government chairmen to prevent any potential breaches of the law,” the group said.

As earlier reported by TPCN news, Local unrest has already erupted, with youths blocking entrances to three Local Government secretariats in Kalabari, demanding the chairmen’s departure. Armed youths have also been seen patrolling riverine local councils.

The situation follows a series of court rulings, including a state High Court invalidating the Local Government Law No. 2 of 2024 and an Appeal Court ruling encouraging both parties to maintain the status quo. HRAN emphasized that the judgment nullifying the tenure extension remains in force, and the former chairmen’s refusal to vacate their offices challenges the rule of law and stability. “The refusal of the former chairmen to vacate their offices is a direct challenge to the rule of law and the state’s stability,” HRAN said. “We urge all parties to respect the court’s decision and ensure a peaceful transition of power.”
