Mirror International School Director’s Wife Kidnapped

A shocking incident occurred at the entrance of a popularly known school in Rukpokwu, Mirror International School, Rukpokwu Port-Harcourt as the wife of the school’s director was kidnapped by armed men. The incident has sent shockwaves through the school community, leaving students, teachers, and parents in a state of panic and uncertainty.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident happened around 10:00 am when the victim was driving to the school. As she approached the school entrance, the kidnappers, who were reportedly armed with guns, blocked her path and threatened her. The victim, fearing for her safety, opened her car door, and the kidnappers dragged her out and took her to their waiting vehicle, which was parked nearby.

Eyewitnesses reported that the kidnappers fired shots into the air to disperse the crowd that had gathered, causing panic and chaos. “It was a terrifying scene,” said one eyewitness. “The kidnappers were armed and seemed to be well-organized. They didn’t give anyone a chance to intervene.” The eyewitnesses described the kidnappers as wearing masks and dark clothing, making it difficult to identify them.

The kidnappers have not yet made contact with the victim’s husband or the school authorities to demand a ransom. The police have been notified, and an investigation is currently underway to apprehend the kidnappers and rescue the victim. The school authorities have also increased security measures around the school to prevent any further incidents.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety and security of students and staff at the school. Parents have been expressing their worries and fears about the incident, and some have even considered withdrawing their children from the school. “I’m very worried about my child’s safety,” said one parent. “I don’t know how the kidnappers were able to get so close to the school without being detected.”

The school authorities have assured parents that they are doing everything possible to ensure the safety and security of their children. “We understand the concerns of our parents, and we want to assure them that we are taking all necessary measures to prevent any further incidents,” said the school’s principal. “We are working closely with the police and other security agencies to ensure that our school is safe and secure.”

The incident has also raised questions about the effectiveness of the school’s security measures. The school has a security team that is supposed to patrol the premises and ensure that everyone who enters the school is properly identified. However, it appears that the kidnappers were able to breach the school’s security measures without being detected.

The police have promised to do everything possible to rescue the victim and apprehend the kidnappers. “We are taking this incident very seriously, and we will do everything possible to rescue the victim and bring the kidnappers to justice,” said the police spokesperson. “We urge anyone with information about the incident to come forward and assist us in our investigation.”

Dele Farotimi’s Arrest: A Reminder Of Nigeria’s Struggle With Free Speech

In a country that prides itself on being a democracy, the arrest and detention of human rights lawyer and activist Dele Farotimi send a chilling message about the state of free speech in Nigeria. Farotimi, a vocal critic of systemic injustice, is the author of “Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System”, a book that boldly exposes the entrenched corruption and abuse of power within the nation’s legal framework. His detention, allegedly linked to this publication, is a stark illustration of the lengths to which those in power will go to suppress dissent.

This event not only brings his book into the spotlight but also raises questions about the state of Nigeria’s democracy, the role of its criminal justice system, and the treatment of individuals who dare to challenge the status quo.

Farotimi’s “Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System” is more than a critique of the judiciary, it is a searing indictment of a system designed to favor the powerful at the expense of the powerless. Drawing from his experiences as a lawyer, including legal battles with prominent figures like Chief Afe Babalola, Farotimi unveils the dark underbelly of Nigeria’s justice system. He exposes how systemic corruption, selective application of the law, and impunity have eroded public trust in the very institutions meant to uphold justice.

The book’s unflinching narrative has made it a target for backlash, as it names individuals and details systemic failures with a clarity that leaves no room for ambiguity. This transparency, while commendable, has ruffled feathers in high places, leading to his recent arrest.

Dele Farotimi’s arrest is a grim reminder of the perils faced by those who challenge the system in Nigeria. Prominent activists like Inibehe Effiong and Omoyele Sowore have decried this move, highlighting the sinister undertones of silencing a man whose only “crime” is advocating for justice and reform.

Reports suggest that Farotimi had been receiving threats from influential figures, including Chief Afe Babalola, and other key players in government circles. The arrest, therefore, appears to be part of a broader strategy to intimidate and discredit him. However, rather than stifle his message, this incident has amplified it, drawing national and international attention to the issues he raises in his book.

Farotimi’s book has now become a symbol of resistance against oppression and a rallying cry for justice. Its significance lies not just in its content but in the broader context of its publication and the events surrounding it.

The book peels back the layers of dysfunction in Nigeria’s judiciary, exposing how it perpetuates inequality and serves as a tool for the powerful. Farotimi’s accounts are backed by lived experiences, making his critique both credible and urgent.

In an environment where many critics prefer to speak in abstractions, Farotimi’s decision to name individuals and institutions responsible for systemic abuse is courageous. This level of accountability is rare and necessary for meaningful reform.

Beyond criticism, the book serves as a call to action. It challenges readers to demand accountability, push for reforms, and resist the normalization of injustice.

Farotimi’s ordeal is not an isolated case. It is part of a larger trend of suppressing dissent in Nigeria, where artists, writers, and activists often face persecution for expressing inconvenient truths.

Against the backdrop of the foregoing viewpoint, it is germane in this context to recall that Idris Abdulkareem’s “Jaga Jaga” was vilified by the government for criticizing corruption and poverty.  In a similar vein, Chinua Achebe’s “There Was a Country” faced backlash for its candid account of the Nigerian Civil War and critique of political leadership.  Also, “Onyeka Onwenu’s Niger Delta documentary” drew ire for spotlighting environmental degradation and exploitation in the oil-rich region.

These instances highlight a worrying pattern: those who hold a mirror to society are often met with hostility rather than engagement.

It is unfortunate that a country that prides itself as a democratic nation has over the years been relishing in stifling opposing voices. This, no doubt, contradicts the fact that a healthy democracy thrives on open dialogue, constructive criticism, and the exchange of ideas. Unfortunately, silencing dissent does not eliminate the issues raised; it only deepens public disillusionment and distrust.

The Nigerian Constitution guarantees freedom of expression, yet incidents like Farotimi’s arrest reveal the fragility of this promise. The government must recognize that dissent is not a threat but a catalyst for growth and reform.

In fact, Dele Farotimi’s arrest is a clarion call for Nigerians to rally around the principles of free speech and justice. Civil society organizations, human rights advocates, and ordinary citizens must demand his release and insist on accountability from the government.

Moreover, by reading and sharing “Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System”, Nigerians can amplify Farotimi’s message and ensure that his work reaches the widest possible audience. The book is not just a critique; it is a blueprint for change, offering insights and solutions to the issues plaguing the nation.  Though this writer has not been able to lay his hands on the book, but from information gathered so far concerning the book, it is a must-read.

Nigeria stands at a crossroads. The arrest of Dele Farotimi presents an opportunity for the nation to reaffirm its commitment to democratic principles or risk sliding further into authoritarianism. The choice lies in how the government responds, not just to Farotimi’s case, but to the broader call for justice and reform.

As citizens, we must resist the silencing of voices that speak truth to power. By supporting individuals like Farotimi, we uphold the ideals of democracy and pave the way for a better, more just Nigeria. Let us ensure that freedom of speech and expression triumphs, for it is the bedrock of any society that dares to call itself free.

Beyond Oil

For far too long, Nigeria has been trapped in the shadows of its oil wealth, a resource that was meant to be a blessing but has instead become a crutch, propping up an economy that struggles to stand on its own. As a nation, we have poured all our hopes and efforts into crude oil, blindly tethering our future to the unpredictable ebbs and flows of the global oil market. Yet, despite decades of extraction and billions in revenue, what tangible benefits have the ordinary Nigerian reaped? How has the average citizen—struggling with poverty, poor infrastructure, and unemployment—truly felt the wealth of this oil-producing nation? The answer is sobering: we haven’t. The wealth has been concentrated in the hands of a few, while the rest of the country languishes, watching other sectors wilt away like crops in a drought.

The tragedy lies not in the presence of oil but in our over-reliance on it, to the detriment of every other resource and sector that could have propelled us to greatness. Agriculture, once the lifeblood of our economy, has been sidelined, reduced to a shadow of its former glory. This is a nation blessed with vast arable land and a climate capable of sustaining year-round farming. Yet, we import rice, wheat, and even fruits—resources we should be exporting in abundance. Imagine the transformation that could come from empowering smallholder farmers with modern tools, credit facilities, and market access, or from reviving agro-processing industries to add value to what we produce. It’s not just about food security; it’s about creating jobs, reducing rural poverty, and reclaiming our place as a global agricultural powerhouse.

And then there’s tourism—a sector bursting with potential, yet largely untapped. Nigeria is a land of wonders: the majestic Obudu Cattle Ranch, the ancient Nok terracotta, the awe-inspiring Yankari Game Reserve, and the rich cultural tapestry of festivals like Osun-Osogbo. These are treasures that could rival the pyramids of Egypt or the safaris of Kenya if only we invested in infrastructure, improved security, and told the world our story with pride. Tourism is not just about showcasing our beauty; it’s about creating jobs for local communities, boosting foreign exchange, and fostering a sense of pride in our identity.

And what about sports? We’ve seen how Nigerian athletes dazzle the world—our footballers, sprinters, and basketball players have earned global acclaim. But beyond the stadium lights, we’ve failed to build a thriving sports economy. With the right investment in academies, facilities, and local leagues, sports could become a multi-billion-dollar industry, inspiring our youth and providing opportunities that go far beyond medals and trophies.

The real untapped goldmine, however, lies in our people—young, vibrant, and full of untamed potential. In a world increasingly driven by ideas, innovation, and technology, Nigeria cannot afford to sit on the sidelines. We’ve seen nations like India and Israel rise from adversity to become global tech and innovation hubs, not because they had natural resources but because they invested in their human capital. We must do the same. Our schools need to prioritize science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, not just as buzzwords but as lifelines. Our leaders must create an environment where startups can thrive, where creativity is celebrated, and where young Nigerians see a future worth staying for.

But none of this will happen without genuine leadership—leadership that is not content with patchwork solutions or quick fixes but is committed to transformative change. We need leaders who will break the chains of corruption, cut through the red tape, and incentivize investments in non-oil sectors. This is not a task for Abuja alone; every state must take ownership of its destiny, leveraging its unique strengths to build a diversified economy. At the same time, we, the citizens, must do our part. We cannot sit idly by, lamenting from the sidelines. We must demand accountability, push for transparency, and actively participate in the rebuilding of our nation.

It is time for Nigeria to wake up. The oil that we once viewed as our lifeline has become a noose around our necks, tightening with every missed opportunity. We cannot continue on this path. The world is moving forward, and we risk being left behind if we do not diversify our economy and look beyond oil. Agriculture, tourism, sports, technology—these are not mere alternatives; they are the future. They hold the promise of a Nigeria where every citizen has a chance to thrive, where our children inherit not just oil pipelines but a robust, resilient economy.

The road ahead will not be easy. It will require courage, vision, and an unwavering commitment to change. But the time for action is now. We owe it to ourselves, to the generations that came before us, and to those yet unborn. Nigeria’s story is far from over, but we must decide what kind of chapter we want to write next. Beyond oil lies a brighter, more inclusive future—if only we dare to seize it.

14-Year-Old Girl Kidnapped and Raped in Rukpokwu

A 14-year-old girl, whose name has been withheld for security reasons, was kidnapped and raped in Rukpokwu, Eneka Road. The victim lives with her aunt, who operates a small fruit and groundnut stand in the area.

According to the victim, she was alone at the stand when a car pulled up, and a man approached her. “The man told me my aunt needed help, so she asked them to carry me to where she is,” the victim recounted in an interview.

The incident occurred in the afternoon, and there were onlookers present. However, they did not intervene, assuming the victim knew the man. “I saw when the man drove to her stand, and they were discussing, but I thought she knew the man she was talking to,” said one eyewitness.

After a brief conversation, the victim entered the car, unaware of the danger that lay ahead. “Immediately I entered the car, it wasn’t even up to 3 minutes, I passed out,” she said. “When I regained consciousness, I was already in another car, a bus filled with children from 10 years below.”

The victim soon realized that she had been raped and was determined to escape. “I noticed pains from my vagina and blood, then I realized I have been raped, but at that point, I just wanted to go home.”

The victim took advantage of a distraction to escape from the bus. “They drove us to a fenced building filled with bush, then they stopped. After stopping, the guy sitting at the back went down, probably to ease himself, and then the driver was making a call.”

Seizing the opportunity, the victim quietly exited the bus and ran towards the fence. “The fence was very high, so what I did was to keep stones on top so it can be high enough for me to climb. I succeeded and jumped over to the other side, sustaining many injuries.”

The victim continued to run, screaming for help until she reached a nearby village. A good Samaritan, who claimed to know her parents, intervened and assisted her in contacting her family.

The victim was eventually reunited with her parents, who were alerted to her disappearance.

The victim’s aunt, who operates the fruit and groundnut stand, expressed her shock and outrage over the incident. “I was at the market when it happened. I had no idea she was taken until I returned and couldn’t find her. I’m just grateful she’s safe now.”

The community is calling for increased security measures to prevent such incidents in the future. “This is a wake-up call for all of us,” said a local resident. “We need to be more vigilant and look out for each other, especially our children.”

The incident has also sparked concerns about the safety of children in the area. “This is a very disturbing incident,” said a local teacher. “We need to educate our children about the dangers of talking to strangers and accepting rides from unknown individuals.”

FWIFT Calls For End To Gender-Based Violence In The Entertainment Industry

In alignment with the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, the Forum of Women in Film and TV (FWIFT) has renewed its commitment to ending violence against women and girls across all sectors of society.

FWIFT, the Nigerian chapter of Women in Film and TV International, released a statement emphasizing its mission to advance women’s careers in the film and television industry while addressing critical social issues impacting women.

A focal point of this year’s campaign is the persistent problem of sexual harassment within the creative sector, widely known as the “casting couch” phenomenon. The forum highlighted how this issue, involving demands for sexual favors by some casting directors, has long been overlooked in mainstream discussions.

The global theme for this year’s campaign is UNITE! Activism to End Violence Against Women and Girls. Organizers describe gender-based violence as “the most pervasive human rights violation around the world.”

“In the spirit of UNITE, FWIFT is proud to announce a significant gathering of film and TV industry leaders as well as policymakers at a Round Table united against gender-based violence on Thursday, 12th December, in Lagos,” the statement added.

FWIFT’s Founder and President, Ms. Ajoke Silva (MFR), emphasized the broader societal impact of gender-based violence, stating, “Gender-based violence is not just a personal issue. It is an epidemic that affects women at all levels of society. Storytelling through films and TV is a powerful tool to shift mindsets and change the narrative.”

Rivers: Abducted 4 Year Old Found By Police

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has successfully arrested Blessing Okoi, a suspect involved in interstate child trafficking. Okoi allegedly lured schoolchildren with snacks before abducting them.

Blessing Okoi was apprehended in Abuja with two children, including a 4-year-old boy named Hope Evans, who had been declared missing in Rivers State. To conceal her actions, Okoi renamed the child “David Evans” as part of her efforts to hand him over to another individual.

The police have revealed that Okoi abducted the boy on October 31, 2024, from the Model Community Nursery and Primary School in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, using biscuits and eggs to lure him away.

The boy’s mother, Lydia Jonah Gabriel, discovered her son was missing after school authorities informed her that an unknown woman had taken him. Subsequent investigations identified the suspect, known locally as “Destiny’s mum,” who fled her residence in Port Harcourt the same night.

The case was reported to the Trans Amadi Police Station and later transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation. Believing the suspect had escaped to Abuja, the victim’s family sought assistance from the FCT Police Command, which launched an intensive manhunt.

On November 29, 2024, the police tracked Okoi to Maraba, Abuja, where she was arrested around 8 p.m., and Hope Evans was rescued after a few months in captivity. During interrogation, Okoi the alleged kidnapper, initially claimed to be the boy’s mother but later admitted to changing his name to David. She also falsely claimed the child was the result of a previous relationship to deceive her partner, who was curious of the sudden existence of a child in Okoi’s life.

In addition to Hope, Okoi was found with another young boy, whom she claimed was her son. Police are investigating this claim and the extent of her activities.

On December 6, 2024, Lydia Jonah Gabriel was reunited with her son in an emotional moment at the office of the FCT Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, in Port Harcourt.

She expressed gratitude to the police, stating:

“Since this incident happened, I have not been able to sleep. My husband has been restless and even accused me of giving our son to my parents to sell, out of frustration. But I thank God the police have found my son, and I am vindicated.”

Commissioner Disu used the occasion to advise school proprietors to prioritize the safety of children and urged parents to remain vigilant. He emphasized the importance of monitoring children’s interactions with strangers and being cautious of individuals offering snacks or other items.

The Commissioner commended his team for their dedication and assured the public that Okoi remains in custody, undergoing further interrogation and facing imminent prosecution. Investigations continue to uncover the full scope of her activities.
