Court of Appeal rules on motions by defective lawmakers

By Tina Amanda

At a virtual hearing on June 14, 2024, the Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt delivered its ruling on two motions filed by Martins Amaewhule and other defected lawmakers. The motions challenged the injunction issued by the Rivers State High Court, which restrained them from acting as lawmakers.

On the first motion Court granted the Appellants’ prayers for leave to compile and transmit the records of Appeal, deeming the Appellants’ brief of argument as filed, accelerated hearing and a stay of further proceedings at the High Court.

The Court however refused to grant the prayer for stay of execution and setting aside the interim order of the Lower Court as there is a presumption of correctness of an order of a Court.

It held that granting same would be tantamount to determining the appeal at this stage. The Court went on to order the present status quo should be maintained pending the hearing of the Appeal.

Ruling on the 2nd Motion which was brought to set aside the interlocutory injunction of the Lower Court, the Court also refuse the prayer, and reiterated that the ‘present’ status quo should be maintained.

The Respondents are to filed their briefs within 72 hours of being served. The was adjourned to 20 June, 2024, for Hearing of the Appeal.

BREAKING: Life lost during Youth clash in Port Harcourt, multiple gunshots fired

One person has reportedly died and several others were hurt in a fight at the Port Harcourt Local Government Secretariat in Rivers State.

On Tuesday morning, some young people went into the secretariat building, but the police tried to prevent them with firearms. This happened after Governor Siminalayi Fubara told the leaders of the local governments to take charge of the 23 council areas. The young people, who were supporting the Governor, were met with force by the police, and gunshots were fired. The young people were not armed and were upset at the police for using force.

This fight started because of a court decision recognizing a three-man House of Assembly, which annulled the tenure extension granted by the 27-member Assembly loyal to former governor Nyesom Wike, But they didn’t want to leave, so the Governor promptly declared their tenure finished on June 17.

On Monday, something similar happened in Degema and Asari-Toru when young people took over the secretariats and asked the leaders to leave.

Youths of the south-south state were quick to take to X to express their dissatisfaction with the former governor whom most believe is behind the violence and unrest.

“Wike boys are shooting at us but we’re not going to fold,” said @excellentAI.

Some saw this incident as an indication of what the future holds across Nigeria if youths decide to take back their country

It bears mentioning that this showdown is the latest in a series of pissing contests or show of force between current governor Sim Fubara and ex-governor Nyesom Wike.

Federal Government Commits to Sustainable Ogoni Clean-up Efforts

In a resolute move to rejuvenate the Ogoni clean-up initiative, the federal government, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, has pledged to adopt a more effective and enduring approach to environmental remediation and community empowerment in Ogoniland.

At a recent gathering in Bori, Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State, stakeholders convened to discuss the revamped strategy, emphasizing inclusive community engagement and sustainable development. Gift Johnbull, Senior Special Assistant to President Tinubu on Community Engagement, South-South, articulated the government’s commitment to transparency and collaboration:

“Our focus today is on inclusion and collaboration as mandated by President Bola Tinubu. We are here to evaluate significant empowerment initiatives such as environmental remediation, aiming for lasting impact on the lives of the Ogoni people.”

The initiative, branded “Na My Area, Na My Country,” aims to foster patriotism and local ownership while enhancing governance in communities affected by oil spills. This approach marks a departure from past efforts, prioritizing environmental sustainability, economic empowerment, and community well-being.

Addressing stakeholders, Johnbull highlighted the necessity of collective effort to achieve tangible results:

“It is crucial that we come together as diverse stakeholders to collaborate and ensure the success of the Ogoni clean-up. President Tinubu has established robust frameworks and accountability mechanisms to ensure transparency and meaningful community involvement.”

The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) Coordinator, Prof Nenibarini Zabbey, underscored the project’s progress since 2023, particularly in remediation efforts:

“We have focused on remediation of water sources, livelihood creation, and strengthening the health sector. Significant milestones include the certification of 48 out of 50 remediated sites by NOSDRA, and ongoing efforts to clean contaminated shorelines and restore mangroves.”

Prof Zabbey detailed ongoing efforts in land and water remediation, highlighting the intricate nature of the sites targeted for cleanup and the extensive scope of mangrove restoration initiatives.

In his address, Suanu Baridam, the traditional ruler of Bangha in Khana, stressed the importance of the clean-up initiative in transforming the lives of the Ogoni people:

“We urge that the clean-up not only addresses environmental concerns but also enhances economic opportunities and empowers our youth.”

Licensed Customs Agents Demand Government Action Against Illegal Practices at Onne Port

Licensed customs agents operating at Onne Port in Rivers State are urging the federal government to crack down on illicit activities taking place at the port. They allege that bonded warehouse owners in the area, in collaboration with some Nigeria Customs Service officials, are engaging in illegal practices that undermine fair trade and government revenue.

Speaking to reporters recently, Nelson Ejiofor, a licensed customs agent, expressed deep concern over the situation. He emphasized that bonded warehouse owners are employing tactics like using second-hand spare parts to evade proper import duties, thus gaining unfair advantage over legitimate agents.

Ejiofor stated, “The activities of these bonded warehouse owners are crippling our businesses. They exploit loopholes in the system by under-declaring goods and using deceptive methods. This not only affects our client relationships but also harms the government’s revenue collection.”

Echoing Ejiofor’s sentiments, Chukwudi Okereke, another licensed agent, highlighted the financial impact on their operations. He recounted instances where clients opt for cheaper clearance options facilitated by bonded warehouses, leaving legitimate agents at a disadvantage.

“It’s disheartening to lose clients because of discrepancies in clearance costs,” Okereke said. “We operate within the law, but some warehouse owners cut corners, using inferior parts to cut costs illegally. This undermines our credibility and livelihoods.”

The agents are calling on regulatory authorities to investigate these allegations promptly and enforce stringent measures to curb such fraudulent practices at Onne Port. They argue that without decisive action, the integrity of import processes and the financial health of legitimate businesses will continue to suffer.

In response to the agents’ concerns, a representative from the Nigeria Customs Service assured that the agency takes these allegations seriously and is committed to upholding transparency and fairness in all port operations.

“We are aware of the reported malpractices at Onne Port and are actively investigating these claims,” the representative stated. “Our priority is to maintain a level playing field for all stakeholders and ensure that import duties are paid correctly, in accordance with the law.”

Furthermore, industry experts have weighed in on the broader implications of such illegal activities. Dr. Grace Udo, an economist specializing in trade policies, emphasized that customs fraud not only distorts market dynamics but also undermines national economic stability.

“Customs fraud leads to revenue loss for the government, which could otherwise be invested in critical infrastructure and social programs,” Dr. Udo explained. “It also erodes trust in regulatory bodies and discourages foreign investors looking for transparent and efficient trade environments.”

To address these challenges comprehensively, stakeholders are advocating for enhanced collaboration between regulatory agencies, law enforcement, and industry players. They propose measures such as stricter auditing of bonded warehouses, improved training for customs officials, and increased penalties for offenders.

In a public statement, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Finance acknowledged the gravity of the situation and pledged governmental support for implementing necessary reforms.

“We are committed to fostering a competitive and ethical business environment,” the spokesperson affirmed. “The Ministry is working closely with relevant agencies to strengthen oversight mechanisms and ensure compliance with international trade standards.”

Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed his satisfaction with the increasing number of Nigerians engaging in agriculture to boost food production, lower prices, and enhance national self-sufficiency. However, he also raised concerns about the country’s unchecked population growth, urging it to be a priority for all citizens.

Buhari made these remarks after joining the Emir of Daura, Dr. Faruk Umar Faruk, for Eid prayers at the Daura Eid ground on Sunday. Speaking to the press, Buhari emphasized the importance of self-reliance in food production. “I appeal to all citizens to make Nigeria self-reliant by growing our own food. We have demonstrated our capability, and now is not the time to relent with rising prices. Let us support local products to build a prosperous and stable country,” he said.

Encouraging the youth, Buhari emphasized their crucial role in nation-building. He urged them to draw inspiration from the country’s founding fathers and regional leaders, highlighting the importance of understanding their legacies. “I urge the youth of the country to seek to know about the founding fathers of the nation, the important personalities of their regions, and derive inspiration from them,” he stated.

Reflecting on the large Eid gathering in Daura, Buhari expressed concern about the consequences of unchecked population growth. He warned that it could pose significant challenges for future generations if not addressed promptly. “There is a need for greater discussion and awareness about this problem, as well as a need to invest more in education and health,” he said.

In the spirit of Sallah, Buhari urged Nigerians to support each other and act as their brothers’ keepers. “Considering the situation in the country, and in the spirit of the Sallah, let us help one another and be our brothers’ keepers. I wish everyone a happy Sallah. May this special festival bring joy, prosperity, and wonderful health to everyone,” he expressed.

Buhari also took the opportunity to commend the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), describing it as a key achievement of General Yakubu Gowon’s tenure. He called for the continued strengthening of the NYSC by future administrations, noting its role in fostering national unity. “The scheme continues to be a strong fabric holding the country together, and I want successive administrations to continue to strengthen it,” he said.

As part of his annual tradition, the former president donated a cow, 10 bags of rice, and cash to NYSC members celebrating Sallah, recognizing their ongoing homage and the scheme’s role in national unity. He highlighted the NYSC’s importance in promoting understanding and cooperation among Nigeria’s diverse population, reinforcing his commitment to its objectives.

JAMB Warns Candidates Against Fraudsters Promising UTME Results Without Registered SIM Cards

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has issued a stern warning to candidates appearing for the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) to beware of fraudulent schemes promising to deliver results without registered SIM cards. This caution comes in response to reports of deceitful activities orchestrated by individuals working in collaboration with an individual identified as Raphael at the Lagos State University (LASU) Computer Based Test (CBT) Centre.

In a statement released through its official Twitter handle @JAMBHQ, JAMB emphasized the risks associated with engaging third parties for exam-related services, urging candidates to avoid falling victim to scams. The board highlighted the fraudulent tactics employed by certain individuals, particularly pointing out one Fomo Web3 @Chaser67y, who has been actively misleading candidates with false assurances of securing UTME results without the necessity of registered SIM cards.

JAMB’s Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, emphasized the seriousness of the issue during a press conference held earlier today. He stated, “We have observed with great concern the alarming rise in fraudulent activities targeting vulnerable UTME candidates. It is disheartening that some unscrupulous individuals are exploiting the aspirations of our youth for personal gain.” Prof. Oloyede further warned, “These fraudsters are not only jeopardizing the credibility of our examination process but also preying on the trust of unsuspecting candidates.”

The board has vowed to take decisive action against the perpetrators involved in these deceptive practices. “We are actively investigating this matter and will ensure that those responsible face the full consequences of their actions,” assured Prof. Oloyede. He encouraged candidates to report any suspicious activities or solicitations immediately to the appropriate authorities.

In response to the unfolding situation, concerned stakeholders have expressed their support for JAMB’s efforts to safeguard the integrity of the UTME. Dr. Adebayo Okunade, a representative of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), emphasized the need for vigilance among candidates. “It is crucial that students remain vigilant and rely only on official channels for information regarding their UTME results,” Dr. Okunade remarked.

Additionally, the Nigerian Police Force has pledged its commitment to collaborating with JAMB in apprehending those responsible for perpetrating fraudulent activities. ACP Mariam Yusuf, the Force Public Relations Officer, affirmed, “We are working closely with JAMB to identify and arrest the individuals behind these scams. Such criminal activities will not be tolerated, and the perpetrators will face the full wrath of the law.”

Chika Udo, the Minister of State for Education, reiterated the government’s stance on eradicating exam malpractice. “We stand firmly with JAMB in their efforts to combat fraud in our educational system. Our priority remains ensuring fairness and transparency in all examination processes,” Hon. Udo declared.

As investigations continue, JAMB has advised candidates to strictly adhere to guidelines and protocols established for the UTME. The board emphasized that all communications regarding examination results will be officially communicated through registered SIM cards linked to candidates’ profiles. “It is imperative that candidates do not engage with unauthorized individuals claiming to offer shortcuts or special privileges,” cautioned JAMB’s spokesperson.

Sallah: Chief Imam’s Stolen ram in plateau state leads to outcry on social media

The theft of a sacrificial ram belonging to the Chief Imam of Mista Ali community in Plateau State’s Bassa Local Government Area has sparked outrage and concern, highlighting the broader economic challenges and moral decay facing the country. The incident occurred on the eve of Eid al-Adha celebrations, a significant religious holiday.

Malam Haruna Yaqub, another Imam in the community, condemned the theft during his sermon, emphasizing its insensitivity and religious significance. “The Ram of our Chief Imam, which he purposely brought to sacrifice, has been stolen in the night. We are really shocked by the incident. We were surprised to hear this story,” Yaqub lamented. He continued the sermon by reminding the congregation that everyone would be accountable for their actions both in this life and in the hereafter.

He expressed concern over the community’s moral decay, stating, “This means that people are not God-fearing. It is scary that people have gone to the extent of stealing a ram meant for religious activity.” Yaqub urged the community to be God-fearing and refrain from engaging in theft or criminal activities.

“It is high time people repented of their sins and took the path of Allah. It is not too late. People should stop committing bad things and act according to Allah’s commandments,” he urged.

X users took to social media to highlight broader economic challenges facing the nation, where poverty and desperation may drive individuals to commit such crimes. Some believe the theft of a sacrificial ram, a symbol of religious devotion, highlights the need for community members to reflect on their values and priorities. While others shared Yaqub emphasis on the need for the community to come together to promote a culture of respect, empathy, and God-fearing values to address some of the underlying issues driving such incidents.
