Vaping in Nigeria: Green Outside, Deadly Within

As the world grapples with the rise of e-cigarettes, also known as vapes, Nigeria faces a growing public health crisis. Marketed with sleek designs and appealing flavours, these devices are rapidly gaining traction among Nigerian youth, raising concerns about addiction, health risks, and the potential for a new generation hooked on nicotine.

Vaping, the act of inhaling and exhaling aerosols produced by e-cigarettes, is often presented as a safer alternative to traditional smoking. However, evidence suggests that vaping can be a gateway to smoking, especially for young people.

Studies show that adolescents who vape are significantly more likely to start smoking combustible tobacco. Furthermore, the industry’s aggressive marketing tactics, often targeting youth through social media and appealing flavours, are fueling the crisis.

The Nigerian market is currently flooded with vape products, with limited regulations and a lack of age restrictions. This regulatory vacuum has created an environment where youth are easily exposed to nicotine addiction and its associated health hazards.

To protect the health of its citizens, Nigeria must implement comprehensive measures, including age limits, bans on flavoured and disposable vapes, and increased public awareness campaigns. The future of Nigeria’s youth is at stake, and decisive action is needed to prevent a vaping epidemic.
