State Awards Bursaries to Students in Oyigbo

In a move to alleviate financial burdens and encourage academic excellence, the Rivers State Government has commenced the disbursement of bursaries to over 200 deserving students from Oyigbo Local Government Area. This targeted financial assistance program aims to support students pursuing higher education at various tertiary institutions across the country, ensuring that promising young minds are not deterred by economic constraints from achieving their academic aspirations. The bursaries cover a portion of tuition fees and living expenses, offering significant relief to beneficiaries and their families.

The selection process for the bursaries emphasized both academic merit and demonstrable financial need, ensuring that the aid reaches those who need it most and have the potential to excel. A committee comprising education stakeholders and community representatives oversaw the transparent vetting process. “This is a lifeline for many of us. Without this support, continuing my university education would have been very difficult,” expressed Gift Eke, a beneficiary studying Chemical Engineering at UniPort.

Mrs. Ngozi Amadi, a mother of one of the beneficiaries, shared her joy: “My son’s fees were a huge worry. Now, with this bursary, he can focus completely on his studies. We are truly thankful.” The program is also seen as an incentive for younger students to strive for academic excellence, knowing that support is available for higher education.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, a representative from the Ministry of Education reiterated the state government’s commitment to human capital development. “Investing in our youth through education is paramount for the sustainable growth of our state. These bursaries are a testament to that commitment,” he stated. Community elder, Chief Godspower Ada, added, “This will empower our youth and bring development to our community. Education is the best legacy.” The bursary scheme is part of a broader strategy to ensure inclusive access to quality education throughout Rivers State.
