Khana LGA Launches Massive Reading Campaign in Schools

In a concerted effort to boost literacy rates and foster a culture of reading among young learners, Khana Local Government Area has launched an ambitious reading campaign across its primary and secondary schools. The initiative, spearheaded by the local education board in partnership with community groups, aims to improve comprehension skills, expand vocabulary, and instill a lifelong love for books in students from an early age.

The campaign involves several components, including the establishment of school reading clubs, regular story time sessions, and the donation of new books to school libraries. Teachers are also being trained on innovative reading methodologies to make learning more engaging. “We believe that a strong foundation in reading is crucial for success in all subjects and in life,” stated Mrs. Blessing Nkala, the Education Secretary for Khana LGA.

Local authors and community elders are actively participating, sharing traditional stories and inspiring students with their literary journeys. “It’s wonderful to see the children so excited about books. Reading opens up entire new worlds for them,” remarked Chief Ganiyu Akpan, a revered community elder who led a recent storytelling session. Students are encouraged to read a certain number of books each month, with incentives for top performers.

Parents have expressed strong support for the initiative. “My daughter used to struggle with reading, but now she brings books home every day and is always eager to read. Her confidence has really grown,” shared Mrs. Florence John. Another teacher, Mr. Peter Emeka, noted, “The reading clubs have made a huge difference. Students are now more articulate and eager to express themselves.” The campaign hopes to make every child a proficient reader, equipping them with essential skills for academic and personal growth. “Reading is the key to unlocking knowledge. This campaign will empower a generation,” added Barrister Ken Saro, a local lawyer supporting the initiative.
