Students in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State are receiving valuable support for their future through a new career guidance and mentorship initiative. Launched by the Rivers State Ministry of Education, this program aims to bridge the gap between academic learning and future career prospects, providing secondary school students with insights, direction, and practical advice as they prepare for higher education and the professional world. “Many students don’t know what career paths are available. This program is truly helpful,” remarked Mrs. Gloria Nkoli, a school counselor.
The initiative connects students with experienced professionals from various fields, including engineering, medicine, business, and arts. Through workshops, one-on-one mentoring sessions, and career fairs, students gain exposure to different industries, understand job requirements, and learn about essential skills needed for success. The program emphasizes self-discovery, helping students identify their strengths and interests to make informed career choices. “I learned so much about what it takes to be a doctor. It really motivated me,” said a student, Chike Obi.

Local education officials stressed the importance of early career planning, especially in a competitive job market. This program is designed to empower students to set realistic goals and develop strategies to achieve them. It also seeks to instill confidence and provide a network of support that extends beyond the classroom. “Our goal is to ensure every student has a clear vision for their future,” stated a Ministry representative. Parents have lauded the initiative, recognizing its potential to positively influence their children’s trajectories. “My daughter came home so excited about the career options she discovered. This is what our children need,” shared Mr. John Amadi, a parent.
Community leaders are also fully behind the program, seeing it as an investment in the local workforce. Chief Barinaa Lekara commented, “Equipping our youth with guidance today will build a stronger communit tomorrow.” Beyond career advice, the program also covers essential life skills such as communication, leadership, and interview preparation, ensuring students are well-rounded and prepared for any challenge. This holistic approach by Rivers State is setting a new standard for student support, ensuring that students are not just educated but also well-prepared for life after school.
