Free Coding Bootcamps Empower Youth in Bonny

A new initiative in Bonny Local Government Area is setting the stage for the next generation of tech-savvy individuals. The Rivers State Ministry of Education has launched a series of free coding bootcamps for secondary school students, aiming to equip them with essential digital skills for the future. This program is designed to introduce young minds to the fundamentals of computer programming, problem-solving, and critical thinking, preparing them for an increasingly digital world and opening doors to diverse career paths.

The bootcamps, which began this week, are being held at designated community centers and schools with internet access in Bonny. Expert instructors are guiding students through practical coding exercises, teaching them languages like Python and basic web development. The goal is to demystify technology and make it accessible to all, regardless of their background. “This is an amazing opportunity for our children. Digital skills are crucial today,” commented Mrs. Ngozi Okoro, a parent whose son is attending a bootcamp.

Local education officials emphasized that these skills are not just for future software developers but are vital for innovation across all sectors. The program also incorporates elements of digital citizenship, teaching students about online safety and responsible technology use. “We want to empower our youth to create, not just consume, technology,” stated a representative from the Ministry of Education. Students have shown tremendous enthusiasm, with many experiencing coding for the first time. “It’s challenging but really fun! I never thought I could build something with code,” said Blessing Johnson, a secondary student.

The initiative has garnered widespread support from community leaders and parents who see its potential to transform career prospects for the youth. Chief Sunday Ejire, a community elder, remarked, “This will help our young people compete globally and bring new ideas back to Bonny.” The long-term vision is to foster a culture of innovation and provide a skilled workforce that can drive economic growth in Rivers State. By investing in these foundational tech skills, the state is making a powerful statement about its commitment to preparing its citizens for the opportunities of the 21st century.
