Gokana Schools Receive Essential Learning Materials Donation

Public schools in Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State have received a substantial donation of essential learning materials, courtesy of the Rivers State Government and a coalition of education-focused philanthropic organizations. This timely intervention aims to address the critical shortage of textbooks, exercise books, and other instructional aids, which has often been a significant barrier to effective learning in many rural communities within the state. The distribution is part of a broader commitment to ensuring equitable access to quality education for all children.

The donated items include thousands of textbooks covering core subjects like English Language, Mathematics, Sciences, and Social Studies, aligned with the national curriculum. In addition, students received exercise books, pens, pencils, and other stationery. Some selected schools also benefited from the provision of basic classroom furniture and educational charts. The initiative is a direct response to appeals from school administrators and community leaders who highlighted the urgent need for these materials to support both teachers and students in their academic pursuits.

Headteachers across Gokana expressed immense gratitude for the gesture, noting its immediate positive impact on teaching and learning. “Our students often shared textbooks, or some went without because their parents couldn’t afford them. This donation means every child now has their own set of books, which will undoubtedly improve their understanding and performance,” said Mrs. Cecilia John, theHeadteacher of Community Primary School, Bodo. She also mentioned how it boosts the morale of the teachers who now have better resources to work with.

The Commissioner for Education, represented at the distribution exercise, reiterated the state government’s resolve to remove all obstacles to quality education. “Access to relevant and up-to-date learning materials is fundamental to a child’s educational journey. This initiative is a clear demonstration of our commitment to equipping our students and teachers in Gokana with the necessary tools to excel academically and compete effectively,” he stated, emphasizing that similar distributions are planned for other LGAs.

Students were visibly excited as they received their new books and stationery. For many, it was the first time owning brand-new textbooks. “I feel very happy today because I have my own English textbook. Before, I had to share with my friend, and sometimes I couldn’t do my homework properly,” beamed 10-year-old Favour Okoro, a primary five student. Her excitement underscores the personal significance of such provisions to the young learners.

Community leaders have also praised the collaborative effort, recognizing the importance of such partnerships in community development. “We are very thankful for this kind gesture. When our children have the right books, they learn better, and that improves the future of our entire community,” commented Chief Barinaa Lekara, a community elder from Gokana, who also appealed for sustained support for public schools.

Beyond the immediate benefits, the consistent provision of learning materials is expected to improve student engagement, reduce dropout rates, and enhance academic performance across all subjects. It also alleviates the financial pressure on parents, particularly those in low-income households, who often struggle to afford basic school supplies. This holistic approach ensures that the educational ecosystem in Gokana is strengthened, empowering the next generation with the knowledge and resources required for success.
