Political Interest Identified as Reason for Mass Defection

Following mass defection of political office holders to the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC a political affairs analyst has described the move as lacking the ideal political ideologies.

Mr. Darlington Nwuju who made the assertion in an interview with our correspondent said the mass defection of elective officials to the ruling party, was devoid of public interest but centred on achieving personal political aim.

Mr. Nwuju noted that defection is a culture in the nation’s political landscape and not a strange occurrence stating that when an incumbent defects all his political associates who depend and enjoy his patronage go with him resulting to mass defection.

Mr. Nwuju identified the disadvantages of the trend and warned that the nation is drifting into a democracy without credible opposition to checkmate the ruling party.

“Now that democracy is still growing in Nigeria, there is need for political opposition, there is need for political justice and fairness.
Though most of the time when you have all manners of characters that conglomerate to become members of a political parties they end up causing implosion in those parties”, he stated.

Mr. Nwuju called for legislation which would bar the executives from defecting and implementation of existing laws to forestall the culture of random defections to save democracy.

“We are not lacking in laws what we are lacking is effective implementation of law for people to respect it. Section 68 ( 1) g was the particular section the supreme court relies on, to remove Ifedayo Adekunle in 2015 from the House of Representatives.

But that section talks about the legislature. We have a constitution that is seems that have zeroed on the legislature without saying something specific when it comes to the executive arm of government,” he noted.

Recently, the governors of Akwa Ibom Umo Eno, Enugu Peter Mbah, and Bayelsa states Duoye Diri and numerous legislators across the nation cross carpeted to the ruling APC from various opposition parties.
