NBA Annual General Conference 2025 Highlights Need for Greater Visibility in 2026

The Nigerian Bar Association’s (NBA) Annual General Conference (AGC), one of Africa’s most prestigious gatherings of legal minds, once again lived up to its billing as a hub of intellectual exchange and professional networking.

The 2025 edition, hosted in Enugu, recorded impressive strides in organisation and logistics, but it also exposed a critical gap that must be addressed in future editions’ publicity and visibility.

Enugu, with its rich legal and cultural heritage, provided a serene backdrop for the conference. The choice of Michael Okpara Square as the main venue offered ample space and accessibility, while the NBA administration under Maxi Afam Osigwe (SAN) was commended for early registration, discounted rates for young lawyers, and the unprecedented pre-distribution of conference materials to branches.

These measures eased congestion at registration points and improved participants’ experience.

However, despite these innovations, the conference lacked the level of visibility befitting a national event of such scale. Across major streets of Enugu, including Zik Avenue, Ogui Road, and even near the airport, there was little evidence of the NBA’s presence. Directional signage was minimal, leaving many delegates reliant on GPS or local directions.

Observers noted that in previous host cities like Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt, the NBA’s presence was unmistakable with branded billboards, airport displays, and a city-wide atmosphere of legal prestige. By contrast, Enugu residents, including hotel staff and transport operators, seemed largely unaware of the conference.

Social media engagement also fell below expectations. While there were official updates, the vibrancy of real-time interactions, live tweets, polls, and creative content that once characterised the AGC was missing. For an Association with over 100,000 members, many of them young and tech-savvy, this represented a missed opportunity.

Analysts argue that the AGC should be more than an internal Bar event; it should be a civic occasion that boosts local economies, promotes tourism, and projects the NBA’s role in national discourse. To achieve this, the Association must treat publicity as a strategic pillar, not an afterthought.

Recommendations for 2026 include: Early and layered publicity through outdoor branding, jingles, talk shows, and community sensitisation. A dedicated publicity subcommittee is working with local advertising agencies.

Enhanced digital engagement, including videos, podcasts, live coverage, and interactive platforms. City-wide branding, from airports and hotels to motor parks, to create an atmosphere of inclusion.

Partnerships with corporate sponsors, such as banks and telecom firms to expand visibility. Media integration, including live coverage by national television, newspapers, and a world-class media briefing.

Conference mobile apps to guide delegates on schedules, navigation, and networking.

While the 2025 AGC succeeded in organisation and logistics, balancing these internal achievements with stronger external visibility will be crucial ahead of the 2026 edition.

“The AGC should be more than a conference of lawyers; it should be a national event that informs the public, influences policymakers, and inspires civic pride,” one participant noted.

As the NBA prepares for 2026 under the theme “Stand Out, Stand Tall,” the lessons from Enugu provide a roadmap. With intentional investment in publicity, the Bar can elevate its flagship event into a city-wide celebration and reinforce its standing as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s democratic and civic life.
