Bonny Youth Gain Skills Through Vocational Program

In a concerted effort to empower the youth and address unemployment, the Rivers State Government, in collaboration with the Bonny Vocational Centre, has launched a new comprehensive vocational training program targeting young people in Bonny Local Government Area. This initiative aims to equip participants with practical, marketable skills that are in high demand across various industries, fostering self-reliance and entrepreneurship.

The program offers diverse courses, including electrical installation, welding and fabrication, catering and hospitality, and ICT skills, designed to provide participants with hands-on experience and industry-recognized certifications. The goal is to bridge the skills gap and create a skilled workforce capable of contributing to the local and national economy. “I’ve always wanted to learn a trade, but the fees were too high. This program is a fantastic opportunity for me to gain a skill and start my own business,” shared Daniel Eke, one of the excited participants in the welding class. “I can’t wait to put my new skills to use.”

During the inauguration ceremony, the Commissioner for Youth Development, Hon. Chidi Amaechi, emphasized the importance of vocational training in driving economic growth and reducing youth restiveness. “Empowering our youth with practical skills is key to building a sustainable future.

This program will not only create employment opportunities but also foster a new generation of entrepreneurs and innovators in Bonny,” he stated. He urged the participants to take the training seriously and utilize the skills acquired to improve their lives and communities.

The program is structured to include mentorship components, connecting trainees with experienced professionals who can guide them in their chosen fields and help them navigate the challenges of entrepreneurship. Parents and community leaders have warmly welcomed the initiative, noting its potential to transform the lives of many young people. Mrs. Blessing Johnson, a parent, expressed her gratitude: “My son dropped out of school, and I was worried about his future. Now he’s learning a valuable skill. This program gives him hope.”

The Bonny Vocational Centre’s state-of-the-art facilities and experienced instructors ensure a high-quality learning experience. Chief Ibani Koko, a community elder, remarked, “Our youth need opportunities like this. This will keep them busy and give them a source of livelihood instead of roaming around.” The program also includes job placement assistance and support for small business startups, ensuring a holistic approach to youth empowerment. “I’m learning so much about computers; I plan to open a business repairing phones,” said Aisha Musa, an ICT trainee.
