Asari-Toru Schools Launch Student Wellness Program

Public schools in Asari-Toru Local Government Area have rolled out a comprehensive Student Wellness Initiative, designed to promote the holistic well-being of pupils and secondary school students. Recognizing that academic success is closely linked to physical, mental, and emotional health, the program introduces various activities and support systems, moving beyond traditional curriculum to nurture healthier, happier learners. This initiative is a partnership between the Rivers State Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, and local health agencies.

The initiative includes regular health screenings, mental health awareness sessions, anti-bullying campaigns, and enhanced sports and recreational activities. School counselors are being trained to provide initial support for students facing emotional or psychological challenges, while workshops on healthy eating and personal hygiene are also integral parts of the program. “We want our students to not only excel academically but also to be physically and mentally resilient,” stated Mrs. Gloria Briggs, a school nurse involved in the program.

Students have shown positive reception to the new focus on their overall well-being. “The mental health talks really helped me understand my feelings better, and that it’s okay to ask for help,” said David Jumbo, an SS 3 student. Anti-bullying efforts are also creating a safer and more inclusive school environment. “Since the new campaigns, there’s less bullying, and I feel safer coming to school,” commented another student, Eno Peter.

Parents have expressed gratitude for the initiative, noting its importance in addressing the often-overlooked aspects of student development. “It’s good that the schools are looking at the whole child, not just grades. Our children face many pressures,” said Mr. Tonye Fubara, a concerned parent. The program underscores Rivers State’s commitment to fostering well-rounded individuals capable of thriving in all aspects of life, ensuring a supportive and healthy educational journey for every child in Asari-Toru.
