Okrika Schools Launch Environmental Education Clubs

Schools in Okrika Local Government Area have launched new environmental education clubs, aimed at fostering awareness about climate change, conservation, and sustainable practices among students. This initiative, supported by the Rivers State Ministry of Environment and Education, seeks to empower young people to become stewards of their local environment and contribute to broader ecological preservation efforts.

The clubs engage students in various activities, including tree planting, waste recycling projects, and clean-up campaigns of school premises and local surroundings. Educational workshops on biodiversity, pollution, and the importance of healthy ecosystems are also part of the program. “Our goal is to instill a sense of responsibility towards the environment from a young age,” explained Mr. Ken Saro-Wiwa Jr., an environmental advocate collaborating with the schools.

Students have shown immense enthusiasm for these hands-on activities. “I learned how plastic harms our marine life, and now I always pick up litter. We need to protect our river,” said Favour, a secondary school student. Teachers involved in the clubs highlighted the positive impact on student engagement and community involvement. “It’s wonderful to see them so passionate about making a difference,” noted Mrs. Helen Briggs, a teacher at Okrika Girls Secondary School.

Parents and community leaders have praised the initiative. “This teaches our children practical ways to care for the environment, which is so important for our riverine communities,” remarked Chief Dabo, a community elder. Another parent, Mr. George Dokubo, added, “My daughter comes home excited about her tree planting. It’s a good way to learn.” The program also encourages schools to adopt eco-friendly practices within their compounds. “We’ve started composting our organic waste, and it’s surprisingly easy,” commented another student, Emeka. This grassroots effort is seen as vital for building a sustainable future in Okrika.
