New Special Education Support Launched in Degema LGA

In a compassionate and inclusive move, the Rivers State Government has rolled out a specialized support program for students with Special Education Needs (SEN) in public schools across Degema Local Government Area. This pioneering initiative aims to provide tailored resources, trained personnel, and adapted learning environments to ensure that children with disabilities or specific learning challenges receive the quality education they deserve. The program in Degema signifies a profound commitment to inclusive education, ensuring that no child is left behind in the pursuit of knowledge and personal development.

The SEN support program includes the establishment of dedicated resource rooms within selected schools, equipped with specialized learning materials, assistive technologies, and adaptive furniture. Specially trained educators, including educational psychologists and therapists, are being deployed to work directly with SEN students, providing individualized attention and implementing customized learning plans. The program also focuses on sensitizing mainstream teachers and students on inclusive practices, fostering an understanding and supportive school community for all children.

“For years, children with special needs here often struggled or were kept at home. This program gives them a chance to learn and feel included, which is truly wonderful,” stated Mrs. Tamunoemi Fiberesima, a parent of a child with special needs, her voice filled with emotion.

During the launch event in Degema Town, the Commissioner for Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, Hon. Dr. Adaobi Ifeanyi, emphasized the moral and societal imperative of inclusive education. “Every child, regardless of their abilities or challenges, has the right to quality education and the potential to contribute meaningfully to society. This SEN support program in Degema is a testament to our resolve to build an inclusive Rivers State, where diversity is celebrated, and every child’s unique needs are met,” she declared. She urged parents to enroll their special needs children, assuring them of a safe and supportive learning environment.

Teachers and community leaders have warmly welcomed the initiative. Many acknowledged the previous lack of adequate support systems for SEN students, which often resulted in these children either being marginalized or dropping out of school altogether. The new program provides the necessary framework and resources to cater to their specific learning requirements, empowering them to thrive academically and socially.

“It used to be very challenging to teach children with diverse needs in a regular classroom without any support. Now, with the resource room and specialized teachers, we can truly cater to their individual learning styles,” commented Mr. Ebiwari George, a mainstream teacher, acknowledging the valuable assistance.

Parents of SEN children expressed immense relief and gratitude, highlighting the hope this program brings for their children’s future. “My son has dyslexia, and he used to struggle so much in class. With the new support and specialized teacher, he’s showing so much improvement and confidence,” shared Mr. John Dappa, a proud father.

The long-term impact of this Special Education Needs support program in Degema is expected to be transformative. It will lead to improved learning outcomes for SEN students, greater social integration, and increased awareness and empathy within schools. By providing equitable educational opportunities, Rivers State is fostering a truly inclusive society where every child can reach their full potential, contributing to a diverse, skilled, and compassionate workforce for Degema and the entire state.
