Digital Literacy Drive Reaches Rural Schools in Gokana

Bridging the digital divide and equipping the next generation with essential 21st-century skills, the Rivers State Ministry of Education has launched an ambitious digital literacy drive targeting public schools in rural communities, with Gokana Local Government Area serving as a key beneficiary.

This initiative aims to introduce students and teachers to the fundamentals of computer usage, internet navigation, and basic digital tools, ensuring that children from all backgrounds have access to the technological knowledge crucial for future success in an increasingly digitized world.

It’s a foundational step towards equitable education and empowering rural youth. The program involves the establishment of modern computer labs in selected schools across Gokana, furnished with desktop computers, reliable internet connectivity (where feasible), and power backup solutions to address erratic electricity supply. Specially trained instructors are deployed to teach students basic computer operations, word processing, spreadsheet applications, and safe internet browsing.

Teachers are also undergoing intensive training to integrate digital tools into their lesson delivery, making learning more interactive and preparing students for technologically advanced learning environments.During the flag-off ceremony in Gokana, the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Hon. This holistic approach ensures comprehensive digital readiness.”My daughter came home so excited because she learned how to type on a computer. This is what our children need to keep up with the world.” – Mrs. Patience John, ParentHowever, the initiative faces unique challenges inherent in rural settings. Reliable and affordable internet connectivity remains a significant hurdle in some remote areas, necessitating innovative solutions like satellite internet or offline learning resources.

Consistent power supply is another critical factor, requiring robust solar power installations or generators. The state government is actively working with telecommunications providers and energy companies to address these infrastructural gaps, ensuring the sustainability and effectiveness of the digital literacy drive. Community leaders have been urged to help safeguard the new equipment from vandalism.

“We are grateful for this. But the network here is often very bad. I hope they find a way to make the internet more stable for the students to use daily.” – Chief Barinaa Lekara, Community ElderThe long-term benefits of this program are far-reaching. Enhanced digital literacy will improve academic performance across all subjects, facilitate access to online educational resources, and prepare students for higher education and diverse career paths.

It will also empower rural communities by increasing access to information, enabling participation in the digital economy, and fostering innovation from the grassroots. This investment in digital education in Gokana is a powerful statement about Rivers State’s vision for an informed, technologically empowered, and inclusive future for all its citizens.
