The cultural heartbeat of the Ijaw nation pulsed strongly in Ogu Kingdom, Rivers State, as Miss Laura Iyama emerged as the winner of the 2025 Ancient Iria Ceremony. In a vibrant and highly celebrated display of tradition, the event, held on Monday, December 8, 2025, successfully completed the revered rite of passage for maiden daughters, affirming the community’s commitment to its rich heritage.
The Iria festival, one of the most significant traditional ceremonies among the Ijaw (Izon) subgroups like the Okrika-Ijaw, serves as a meticulous preparation for womanhood. It traditionally involves the seclusion of maidens in a ‘fattening room,’ where they are mentored by elders on cultural values, home management, and the ethical responsibilities that accompany marriage and adulthood. This period ensures the participants emerge fully prepared and adorned in symbolic beauty.
The final ceremony was a visual feast of Izon womanhood, as beautiful virgin maidens from Ogu Town showcased grace, poise, and dignity before the community. The cultural requirements of the Iria ritual are stringent, emphasizing purity and demonstrated character as hallmarks of a worthy maiden.
Following the ceremonial showcase, Miss Laura Iyama was crowned and bestowed the prestigious title of “Oguapu Tonye.” This title signifies much more than a prize; it is a cultural acknowledgement, often meaning the “Ogu girl who brings favour” or a blessing to the community.

The atmosphere during the crowning was electric, swelling with pride as sons and daughters of Ogu and the entire Izon nation chanted the ancestral call: “Haa Izon, Haa Izon, Izon Kemia” (We are Ijaw, Ijaw People). The resounding chant underscored the collective sense of identity and the pride felt in witnessing the continuity of this ancient tradition.
Miss Iyama, the newly crowned Oguapu Tonye, has been widely praised for her elegance, humility, and ability to represent the timeless beauty and strength of the Izon woman. She now carries the status of a cultural ambassador, embodying the community’s ideals.
The successful organization of the 2025 Ancient Iria Ceremony demonstrates the resilience of Ogu Kingdom in preserving its cultural legacy against the backdrop of modernization. These traditional festivals, which involve elaborate costumes, meaningful rites, and communal celebration, remain essential in passing down core Ijaw values to younger generations and reinforcing a strong sense of community identity.
