The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has refuted claims linking it to a viral video promoting petrol delivery through dispatch riders. The company stated on Sunday, that they has no affiliation with the creators of the clip and no knowledge of its source.
The video, which spread widely online, shows a man sidestepping long fuel queues by ordering petrol via WhatsApp. A dispatch rider soon appears with a motorcycle fitted with a mini fuel dispenser and fills the man’s car.
The advert, branded FuelUp and allegedly “powered by Dangote Petroleum,” sparked mixed reactions—ranging from praise for the innovation to concerns over safety and authenticity, with some suggesting the clip might be AI-generated.
Reacting to the development, Dangote officials dismissed the video outright. The Group Chief Communication Officer, Anthony Chiejina, labelled it “fake,” stressing that the refinery has no involvement in the concept. Another senior official clarified that the refinery deals strictly with bulk fuel distribution and has not entered into any arrangement to sell petrol through motorcycle deliveries.

The clarification comes months after the refinery rolled out hundreds of CNG-powered trucks for its direct distribution programme launched in September. The company is also progressing with plans to expand its refining capacity from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million bpd.
Situated in the Lekki Free Trade Zone, Lagos, the Dangote refinery is one of the largest fully integrated refining complexes globally.
