WAEC Sets CBT Centre Requirements For Schools

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has outlined key infrastructure requirements for schools ahead of the full transition to computer-based testing (CBT) for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) by 2026.

Speaking at a sensitization programme in Port Harcourt on Thursday, September 4, WAEC’s Head of Examinations, Mr. Lucky Njoagwuani, said schools intending to serve as CBT centres must provide a minimum of 250 functional laptops, with at least 10 per cent backups, along with a robust server capable of supporting all systems simultaneously. A fully functional Local Area Network (LAN) is also mandatory.

Additional requirements include CCTV surveillance, reliable lighting and air conditioning, uninterrupted power supply, and a backup generator with a minimum capacity of 40kVA. Schools must also provide a designated holding area or reception room for candidates.

Njoagwuani explained that the CBT model would enhance examination security, reduce logistical costs, and improve access.

“We started the CBT format with the private candidates’ fourth series two years ago. This year’s second series is fully CBT, with no paper option. By next year, school-based candidates will also take the exam fully on computers,” he said.

Port Harcourt Zonal Coordinator of WAEC, Mr. Adeniran-Amusan Akim, advised schools to begin upgrading their ICT infrastructure, stating that only institutions meeting the full requirements will be approved as exam centres.

“WAEC will not compromise on standards,” he added.

Also present was the Rivers State Chairman of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), Mr. Sunday Jaja, who encouraged school owners to explore funding from the Bank of Industry and government MSME programmes to meet the technological requirements.

The event, organised in collaboration with Teadro Systems Ltd, NAPPS, and partners including HP, Lenovo, and Canon, featured a raffle draw through which ICT devices were donated to participating schools.
