Workers’ Day: Rivers Workers Decry Unfavorable Working Conditions

‎As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to celebrate the day, workers in Rivers State have decried the incessant surcharging of their salaries without explanation and unhealthy working conditions as factors limiting their productivity.

‎Speaking on the importance of the day, Mr. Robinson Deriateide said despite the implementation of minimum wage, most workers in Rivers State still face challenges of poor salaries, an unconducive working environment, and unfavorable management policies that negate international laws.

‎A teacher in the Rivers State Universal Basic Education Boa, rd who gave her name as Nkechi Okeke lamented salary deduction and delayed promotion of workers as factors that negatively affected the morale of workers in the state.

‎A staff of Rivers State University, Mr. Gideon Ozi noted that the recent crisis in Rivers State has affected the mood of Workers in the state.

He urged those at the helm of affairs in Rivers State to build on the gains achieved by Governor Siminalayi Fubara and pay workers salaries on time.
‎For Mrs Senam Bamigboye, An Assistant Director of News, Nigeria Television Authority, Worker’s Day is another opportunity for workers to celebrate their victories, evaluate their set goals and strive to set new standard that can lead to general job improvement.

Workers’ Day was first recognised as a public holiday in Nigeria in 1980 by the People Redemption Party of Kano State and It officially became a national holiday on May 1st 1981.

‎Over the years countries around the world have continued to address issues concerning their workforce by implementing policies that would lead to improved efficiency, Rivers State and Nigeria should not be left behind as the world works towards improving the general condition of their working class citizens who help to build a habitable society.
