The National Association of Nigerian Students has criticized the National Universities Commission for failing to enforce admission quotas in universities across the country.
According to NANS, the NUC has shown a nonchalant attitude towards regulating and following admission processes, allowing university management to participate in unethical activities such as admitting more students than they can adequately teach, train, and prepare for professional licensation.
NANS expressed great concern for medical students in different institutions, especially students running programs like Medical Laboratory Science, who have been unable to sit for their professional exams despite completing their programs several years ago.
This negligence from NUC has significantly hindered their career prospects and job opportunities, leaving them unable to practice in their fields of study despite years of hard work in the university
President of the Senate at NANS, Babatunde Akinteye, emphasized the urgent need for NUC to take immediate action to ensure strict adherence to admission policies set by professional bodies.
He advised universities to prioritize students’ welfare and professional futures by adhering to these policies
“The plight of MLS students nationwide exemplifies the consequences of disregarding professional admission policies These students have faced unfair treatment and jeopardized futures due to institutions that should have guided them towards successful careers,” Akinteye remarked.
NANS urged NUC to carry out rigorous monitoring and regulatory measures to protect the interests of all students, both future and present
Akinteye expressed hope that such interventions could restore integrity to professional education in Nigeria, sparing future students and undergraduates from facing similar hardships
