Kehinde Bankole Reflects on Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti Role, Launches NGO

Versatile actress Kehinde Bankole who gained popularity from her appearance in the famous TV series of the Wale Adenuga Production “Super story and This life” has described her portrayal of legendary activist Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti in Bolanle Austen-Peters’ biopic as a transformative experience.

 Bankole starred alongside notable actors such as Joke Silva, Adunni Ade, Adebayo Salami, Jide Kosoko, and Dele Odule in the award-winning film, which clinched Best Overall Feature Film at the 2023 Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF). The 39-year-old actress received the Best Lead Actress award at the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA) 2024 edition for her outstanding performance in the movie “ADIRE”.

Reflecting on her role, Bankole said, “Playing Funmilayo Ransome-kuti was a powerful experience, not just for portraying an incredible woman, but for witnessing the strength that comes from women uniting. Funmilayo understood this deeply,through the Abeokuta Women’s Union (AWU), she built a force for change, a testament to the power of collective action.

Bankole emphasized the significance of the role, stating, “Playing this role is more than just acting. It’s a chance to truly understand the struggles and triumphs of a woman who paved the way for so many. History will remember me for this.” She added, “The impact the film has had since its release has been incredible. Hearing stories of women inspired by Funmilayo’s story and seeing the fight for justice rekindled in people makes this project so special.

In addition to her acting achievements, Bankole announced the launch of her new non-governmental organization, ‘What About the People (WATP).’ This initiative represents a significant shift for Bankole, whose passion for social change was heightened by her role as Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti. “Stepping into the shoes of such a fearless advocate opened my eyes to the immense challenges faced by the Nigerian people. Funmilayo’s unwavering commitment to change and justice resonated deeply with me, and I knew I had to do something tangible to make a difference.”

Bankole highlighted that WATP aims to empower and advocate for underserved communities in Nigeria, focusing on re-orientation, education, and sensitization regarding the people’s duties and rights. The organization will also support women in these areas and work collaboratively with local partners to develop sustainable solutions addressing poverty, inequality, and social injustice.

In her closing remarks, Bankole said, “It has awakened the knowledge that patriotism and activism can work together for the good of the people.” Through WATP, she hopes to continue the legacy of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti and inspire meaningful change in Nigerian society.
