In a shocking revelation, Imo State University (IMSU) has come under intense scrutiny following allegations of admission irregularities. A joint investigation conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has unearthed a complex web of corruption implicating university staff and prospective students. The probe, which commenced following foul play detected by JAMB in the university’s admission processes, has led to the arrest of several university employees and the interrogation of over 230 students suspected of obtaining fraudulent admission letters.
The investigation, spearheaded by JAMB’s spokesperson Fabian Benjamin, unfolded with meticulous precision, exposing the intricate mechanisms of deception employed within the university’s admissions apparatus. Benjamin, in a statement to the press, revealed that close to 10 university staff members were apprehended during a joint operation between JAMB and ICPC officials. These arrests, he emphasized, targeted individuals directly involved in the admissions office, including high-ranking officials such as Registrar, Admission Officers, and VC officials.
In his statement, he affirms that over 200 students were interrogated and it was discovered that money was exchanged between some officials and students for admission into school.
He also advises students to desist from accepting admission from school, and follow the the formal procedure carved out by JAMB.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the investigation will involve a thorough examination of the university’s admission records, including the screening process, admission lists, and other relevant documents. ICPC and JAMB officials will also conduct interviews with university staff, students, and other stakeholders to gather additional information and evidence regarding the alleged misconduct.
It was discovered from an anonymous source that IMSU offers admission to the highest bidder and students from wealthy families despite their low scores in the UTME exams. Students with fake admission will be withdrawn and officials involved will be taken to court
Speaking on behalf of ICPC, Mr. Bolaji Owasanoye, the Chairman of the commission, emphasized the importance of ensuring the credibility and integrity of the admission process in higher education institutions. He stated, “The allegations of fake admissions at IMSU are deeply concerning and require prompt and decisive action. ICPC is committed to upholding transparency and accountability in the educational sector, and we will spare no effort in uncovering any acts of corruption or wrongdoing.”
Similarly, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, the Registrar of JAMB, reiterated the board’s commitment to eradicating corruption and malpractices in the admission process. He emphasized the need for collaboration between regulatory agencies and universities to combat the issue effectively. “JAMB remains vigilant in its oversight role and will work closely with ICPC and other relevant authorities to ensure that admissions into Nigerian universities are conducted in a transparent and merit-based manner,” Prof. Oloyede stated.
The allegations of fake admissions at IMSU have sparked outrage among students, parents, and the general public, who are calling for swift action to address the issue. Many aspiring students have expressed frustration over the possibility of deserving candidates being denied admission due to fraudulent practices.
In response to the allegations, Prof. Adaobi Obasi, the Vice-Chancellor of IMSU, assured the public of the university’s full cooperation with the ongoing investigation. She emphasized the institution’s commitment to upholding the highest standards of integrity and ethical conduct. “IMSU takes these allegations very seriously and will fully cooperate with ICPC and JAMB to ensure that the truth is uncovered and appropriate action is taken,” Prof. Obasi stated
