On Sunday, former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, visited victims of the recent Kano mosque attack who are currently receiving treatment at Murtala Mohammed Hospital. Obi’s visit aimed to express solidarity with the injured, offer support, and wish them a swift recovery. Additionally, he took the opportunity to thank and encourage the hospital’s management for their efforts.
Obi, who previously served as the governor of Anambra State, also extended his condolences to the Government of Kano State, the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, and the people of Kano in the wake of the tragic event. The attack, which occurred during early morning prayers at a mosque in the Laraba Abasawa area of Gezawa Local Government, involved a petrol bomb set off by a 38-year-old man named Shafi’u Abubakar. The death toll from the incident has risen to fifteen, according to the Kano State Police Command.
In a message shared on his X handle on Monday, Obi reflected on the importance of promoting peace, tolerance, and understanding in society. He described his visit as a gesture of solidarity with the victims and a condemnation of violence.
“Yesterday, Sunday the 19th, as a follow-up to my earlier condolence message regarding those who lost their lives in the horrific and devastating terror attack on May 16, 2024, in the Gezawa local government area of Kano State during the morning prayer session, I visited Murtala Mohammed Hospital in Kano to sympathize with those injured and receiving treatment at the hospital,” Obi wrote.
He added, “The visit was to physically show solidarity with the wounded, offer support, and wish them a speedy recovery, as well as to thank and encourage the management of the hospital. And most importantly, it was to send a message to the victims that we stand together in condemnation of any senseless act of violence and killing in our country.”
Obi reiterated his condolences to the Kano State government and the Emir, and he extended his thoughts and prayers to the families of the victims. He concluded by stressing the need for fostering a more peaceful and harmonious community, hoping for eternal rest for the deceased.
