Governor Ugwuanyi of Enugu state paid a visit to hospitalized victims of a trigger happy Police operative, who left not less than five persons dead and another four persons, injured.
The incident which happened on Sunday, at Golf Estate, GRA, Enugu, involved a Police Inspector, who shot sporadically, leaving five victims dead and four persons with gunshot wounds.
During his visit to the victims at ESUT Teaching Hospital Parklane, Enugu, Governor Ugwuanyi expressed shock over the incident.
The governor in the company of the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mohammed Ndatsu Aliyu and the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Hyacinth Onah, empathised with the victims, wishing them quick recovery.
He noted that his administration will take care of all the medical expenses incurred while treating the victims.
He further charged the hospital management to ensure that the victims receive adequate medical attention and utmost care.
The governor also condoled with the families of those who lost their lives.
Earlier in a statement, the Enugu State Police command through its Public Relations Officer, ASP Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed that the Police officer was attached to the Special Protection Unit (SPU) Base 9, Umuahia, Abia state.
“The incident involved a police inspector attached to the Special Protection Unit (SPU) Base 9, Umuahia, Abia and said to be on duty at RC LOTTO Company located within the Golf Estate.
“The commissioner, who made the order after visiting the hospital where four of the persons said to have sustained gunshot injuries are receiving treatment.
“Five others, whose injuries were critical, have been confirmed dead by doctors on duty and deposited in the mortuary for autopsy,’’ he said.
It added that the CP has ordered the Deputy Commissioner of Police in-charge of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, to carry out a thorough investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the shooting incident.
The CP also called on eyewitnesses “to volunteer useful information to aid swift conclusion of the investigation and ensure justice prevails”.
