A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Onuoeze Chukwujika Okocha has advised the Federal Government to adhere to the principles of rule of law to enhance constitutional democracy in Nigeria.
Chief Onueze Okocha, a former president of the Nigeria Bar Association stated this in a lecture to mark the 40th anniversary of the Rivers State University Nkpolu Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt.
In the lecture titled ” The Rule of Law, Total Adherence as a Panacea for Total Restoration of Security, Law and Order in Nigeria ” the legal luminary stated that one of the fundamental principals of rule of law was the concept of separation of power.
The senior advocate urged the federal government to ensure that three of the government function independently.
” They are undermining the rule of law in Nigeria, for example, the failure in the part of legislature to make laws in the part of peace, order and good governance of the federation and the use of blackmail tactics in the process of law making, including the rules of threats of impeachments, unlawful impeachment by the elected governors, deputy governors, speakers, deputy speakers and other officers of the legislative house”
Chief Okocha also called on the federal government to ensure a proper synergy between the federal and state government in the provision of security in the country. He urged the National Assembly to proceed with the amendment of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and also make laws that will allow the state zones and local government to establish their own law enforcement agencies to enable them secure the lives and properties of persons residing in their territory.
