Murder of port worker rekindles animosity between two Rivers communities

A staff of West African Container Terminal, WACT, at Onne Sea Port in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, Godknows Opuda, has been shot to death by unknown assailants in Eteo Community in Eleme.

Mr Opuda was killed in what sources described as a brewing communal disagreement between Eteo and Ogu/Bolo natives.

The diseased was shot in the head by assailants who reportedly trailed him on a motorcycle while he was on his way to Port Harcourt on Tuesday at about 8: 30 pm.

His death has sparked protests on social media as his kinsmen called on the state government to quell an impending crisis.

They said the killing of Opuda was not the first time an Ogu/Bolo native is being killed in Eteo community by the locals.

The Chairman of Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area, Navy Captain Erasmus Victor condemned the killing.

The LGA chair appealed to residents of Ogu/Bolo to exercise restraint and not resort to any extrajudicial means to retaliate following similar repeated incidences in recent past.

He urged Ogu/Bolo residents to keep faith with his administration, assuring that efforts are on to unravel the cause of the unwholesome act, to bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure that such incident does not reoccur.

Erasmus Victor equally noted he is in touch with his counterpart from Eleme, adding Ogu and Onne Police divisions have also synergized to carry out a joint investigation on the matter.
