Rivers Gets Road Safety Advisory Council

In a bid to reduce the menace of road crashes across Rivers State, Rivers State government has inaugurated the Rivers State Road Safety Advisory Council.

The council would drive the implementation of the Nigerian Road Safety Strategy in the state.

The state advisory council is Chaired by the Secretary to the State Government, with Sector Commander of FRSC as the alternate chairman.

Other members were drawn from Ministries of Transport, Health, Justice, Information and Communication, Education, Finance, the Port Harcourt chambers of commerce, Nigerian Society of Engineers and NDLEA.

Governor Nyesom Wike said the inauguration of the advisory council was in good time having recently sworn in the State Road Maintenance Agency to ensure safe and drive-able roads for the good people of Rivers State.

The Governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Tammy Danagogo in Port Harcourt, on Wednesday 16 October said, the council is to advise the State Government and Federal Road Safety Corps on measures to improve road safety management, safer vehicles, safe road users, post-crash care amongst others according to the Nigeria Road Safety Strategy.

He advised members of the council who are to serve as a technical working group to input best practices to begin massive awareness on road safety and to reduce the carnage on our roads having been drawn up from different ministries, departments and agencies.

The Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety, Corps Commander David Mendie said the advisory council was necessary to join synergy with the rest of the federation on ensuring the safety of road users and proper emergency management.
