Friends of the Earth Nigeria; an Environmental rights action group that is is dedicated to the defence of human ecosystems in rights, and to the promotion of environmentally responsible governmental, commercial, community and individual practice in Nigeria through the empowerment of local people, has petitioned the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ecology and climate change, Burka Ahmed Ibrahim, alleging that Shell is a culprit in the oil pollution of Ogoni Land and should not be part of the Governing Council of HYPREP so at allow transparency.
The Governing Council of HYPREP is charged with the responsibility of providing policy guidelines relating to its functions, guide and stay HYPREP on the strategic processes required for the execution of approved projects among others, as it relates to the cleanup of Ogoni Land from the oil pollution.
However, Senator Ibrahim while speaking in Abuja at the launch of the ‘just energy transition in Nigeria’, which is expected to shift focus from the fossil fuel to renewable energy, said it was strange that the Federal Government included shell on the governing council of HYPREP.
Senator Ibrahim while commending the group for pointing out the flaws, promised to take the environmental group’s concerns to the National Assembly for possible action.
