SPDC cause Gas Retardation at Afam VI Power Plant

The Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC, has explained the technical issues at Afam VI Power Plant, which contributed to the loss of 1,087MW of electricity into the national grid.

Recall that the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, said Afam VI power station was shut down last Saturday “to enable SPDC to resolve its gas well issues in order to commence gas supply to Afam VI power station.”

TCN in a statement by its General Manager, Public Affairs, Mrs Ndidi Mbah, had explained that the shutting down of Afam VI contributed to the total loss of 1,087.6MW into the grid, which resulted in load-shedding nationwide.

But SPDC says the power station was not shut down, but only gas supply to the plant was disrupted due to the tripping of its remote gas manifold.

SPDC Media Relations Manager, Mr Bamidele Odugbesan said that the gas supply disruption was resolved in less than three hours on the same day and the plant since then has been up and running.

Odugbesan explained that the remote manifold controls the gas wells which supplies gas to the power plant.

According to him, “There was a minor electrical problem at our remote gas manifold on Saturday, June 16, 2018, which resulted in a temporary disruption of gas supply to Afam VI.

“The electrical problem was resolved under three hours and a normal supply of gas restored to Afam VI.

“The Afam VI power plant is now up and running and available to deliver its net dependable capacity of 624MW into the national grid,” SPDC said.
