CNG Is Coming to Port Harcourt—But What Does It Really Mean for Rivers People?

As Nigeria pushes ahead with its Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) revolution, Port Harcourt is among a handful of cities selected for the first phase of the national rollout. But beyond the headlines and high-level announcements, what does this mean for everyday residents of Rivers State?

According to a statement from the Presidential CNG Initiative (PCNGI), April 25, 2025 is the slated commissioning date for new CNG refueling stations in Port Harcourt, along with other cities like Enugu, Lokoja, Ado-Ekiti, Abia, and the Federal Capital Territory.

For a city like Port Harcourt—a major industrial hub and commercial nerve centre of the Niger Delta—this move could be more than just infrastructure. It signals a shift toward more affordable and environmentally conscious transport options for a region long burdened by high fuel costs and environmental degradation.

But there’s more.

The Federal Ministry of Youths is also set to flag off the first batch of CNG-powered tricycles (keke) on April 15, a move that could reshape small-scale mobility in Port Harcourt’s dense and busy neighborhoods—from Mile 1 to Diobu, Trans-Amadi to Elekahia.

For local transport operators, especially keke riders, this means reduced operating costs and possibly more take-home earnings in a city where fuel hikes often lead to spontaneous fare increases and growing commuter frustration.

The PCNGI also hinted at broader national developments: a $6 million LNG project signing on April 4, a deal with public sector unions for 200,000 vehicle conversions, and even handovers of CNG buses to Nigerian Army personnel by May.

But for now, Rivers people will be watching closely to see whether the initiative is more than just another press briefing. Will the CNG rollout in Port Harcourt bring cleaner air to the city? Lower transport costs? Or new jobs for local mechanics and engineers?

Those are the questions that matter most to residents—and the answers will become clearer as the dates approach.
