FAAN to Recertify Kano, Port Harcourt Airports for Global Safety Compliance

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has initiated the recertification process for Kano and Port Harcourt airports, reinforcing its commitment to international safety and operational standards.

FAAN’s Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, made this known during an inspection of Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, alongside FAAN Board Chairman, Mr. Abdullah Ganduje. As reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), she confirmed that the recertification process is part of FAAN’s broader strategy to enhance airport safety and efficiency.

According to Kuku, FAAN is prioritizing security upgrades across key airports, including replacing outdated security systems and deploying advanced explosive detection technology. Additionally, efforts are underway to improve airport accessibility for passengers with disabilities.

Kuku also revealed that terminal rehabilitation projects are already in motion at MMIA, with further extensive upgrades planned for Lagos and Abuja airports. She emphasized that FAAN is collaborating closely with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to bolster runway security measures and maintain strict safety protocols.

During his assessment, Ganduje acknowledged the challenges facing Nigerian airports, including stalled projects and aging infrastructure. However, he lauded FAAN’s leadership for its modernization initiatives and expressed confidence in its ability to align with the federal government’s aviation development objectives. He further stressed the need for stronger cooperation among aviation agencies to sustain long-term improvements.

The recertification of Kano and Port Harcourt airports follows the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority’s (NCAA) issuance of Aerodrome Certification for Lagos and Abuja airports in November 2024. This certification affirmed their compliance with the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) safety, operational, and technical benchmarks.

By meeting ICAO’s rigorous standards, these airports enhance passenger safety, boost airline confidence, and strengthen Nigeria’s position in global aviation. The certification process requires airports to submit an aerodrome manual detailing facilities, procedures, and safety management systems for regulatory evaluation.

As FAAN continues this process, it underscores Nigeria’s commitment to maintaining top-tier aviation safety, ensuring ongoing compliance with ICAO’s Annex 14, Volume I guidelines, and fostering a more secure and efficient air travel environment.
