Education Commissioner, Prof Chinedu Tenders Resignation To Governor Fubara

Prof. Chinedu Mmom, the commissioner of education for Rivers State, has tendered his resignation to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, claiming an unfavorable work climate that impedes the attainment of his goals for the education sector and the delivery of competent services.

In a letter dated May 15, 2024, Prof. Mmom wrote to the Governor of Rivers State through the Secretary to the Government. He thanked the governor for the opportunity to serve, but he also mentioned that it has been difficult for him to carry out his duties effectively due to the toxic environment, mistrust, and divisions among cabinet members.

The letter stated, in part: “It is however unfortunate to note that my current workspace has become toxic and no longer guarantees a favorable environment to enable me to realize my set targets for the Education sector in the State. There is animosity, sharp division, and loss of trust among colleagues in the same cabinet which is unhealthy and very unfortunate.”

He concluded the letter by thanking the sitting Governor for the opportunity to serve and wished the administration well.

Notably, the Professor’s resignation comes amidst the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, where he was a strong supporter, some say, follower of former Governor Nyesom Wike, now the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

It bears mentioning that Prof. Mmom resigned due to an unfavorable work environment, loss of trust, and divisions among colleagues, which he insisted hindered his ability to deliver effective services and achieve his goals for the education sector in Rivers State.

Prior to President Bola Tinubu’s involvement last year, amid the height of the state’s political crisis, Professor Mmom had already resigned from the Fubara cabinet but changed course at the GCFR’s behest.

It remains to be seen what sort of future implications his departure will have.
