Buhari’s regime gives excuses for its failures – Wike

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike on Wednesday took a swipe at the Buhari-led administration as one that lacks responsibility going by current happenings.

Governor Wike made this assertion in Abuja, at the Executive Intelligence Management Course 14 (EMC14) during a lecture on the topic, ‘Governance, Security and Sustainable Development in Africa, Nexus, Challenges And Prospects: Rivers State As Metaphor at the National Institute for Security Studies (NISS), Abuja.’

He alleged that the President’s exclusion of other regions from critical projects and social justice were some of the factors causing crises in the country. He maintained that only a committed government with suitable policy measures could portray good governance.

“The President Muhammadu Buhari administration cannot be said to be a responsive government that will provide all these because the government of the day gives one excuse or the other for its failures.

“It is terrible. So, in the absence of a responsive government, there cannot be environmental sustainability because it requires good governance.

“When the President said over 90 per cent will go to only those who voted for him, that alone can create a crisis. That is not the hallmark of good governance. I don’t expect a President of a country to say that he will only recognise those who voted for him. That is not democracy,” he stated.

“Only a determined, committed government with the right policy measures can solve this and not a government of promises like what we have today. What we have today cannot be a responsive government that will provide all this,” he said.

He insisted that exclusivity of power leads to crises and insecurity, explaining that zoning of political positions at the state and federal levels represented equity, which ensured peace.

Wike further affirmed that insecurity in the country will stall it from achieving sustainable development.

Citing the instance when the Igbo were complaining against marginalisation in appointments into key positions in the country’s security agencies, he insisted that there was nothing wrong in listening to the Igbo, he said:

“What is wrong in sitting back and say, we are all one and we want this country to be together for us to achieve sustainable development?

“Because if the Igbo and other sensitive parts of the country like the Niger Delta region are alienated from the core of the country’s political and socio-economic considerations, they will begin to believe that they do not belong to the system.”

Wike further criticised the Federal Government for borrowing money from China, arguing that conditions must be met before any money would be given out.

“When you borrow, there are conditions attached. You go to China and borrow, China must be the contractors. I am borrowing, I am paying you as we have agreed but one of the conditions is that we must be the one that will carry out this work,” he said.

“Apart from the interest you are going to make from the loan, you are also making money from doing the work. You see the problem because you have no choice, it erodes independence. You must do what they say you should do.”

The governor further noted that states’ over-dependence on the Federal Government had weakened their independence, as he criticised governors who depend on the monthly Federation Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC).

“No state is poor in this country, it is this over-dependence on the Federal Government,”

“At the end of every month, they send their Accountant-General/Commissioner of Finance for FAAC.

“Any state that tells you we are poor and they deceive you by saying their state is poor. I keep on telling them, if your state is poor, why do you want to be governor? Your state is poor; you want to run the second term.”

School children won’t be part of Independence day event – RSG

The Secretary to the Rivers State Government, Tammy Danagogo, has said that certain restrictions have been set up ahead of the Independence day celebrations due to COVID-19.

While briefing newsmen on Wednesday after an inspection at the Shark Stadium, Port Harcourt, the venue for the Independence day event, Danagogoo explained that although the state has prepared a wonderful celebration for Rivers people, COVID-19 recommendations will be in place as advised by Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

According to him, “You can see officers ready for the parade; everybody involved, from the military officers, the Commissioner of Police is personally here. The simple reason is to ensure that we are good to go. And you can see that we are actually good to go,’ he expressed.

“This year, we are hoping to, as usual, produce a superlative performance, give Rivers people a resounding Independence celebration.

“The only thing that will be different from what we should have done is that because of COVID-19, there are certain restrictions that would be in place.

“You can see because of COVID-19 all over, school children, who usually should be part of this event, are not because we don’t want to allow the primary and secondary school children to come out. Children will not come because of COVID-19. It is part of COVID-19 recommendations or protocols.

“You are aware that they said the Delta Variant is spreading around the world and everybody needs to be careful. The Rivers State Government is always listening to the advice of medical personnel and the NCDC on the COVID-19 protocols.

“But the police would be able to make it a worthwhile experience for us. The COVID-19 restrictions would be the only restriction in place. Besides that, it would be a superlative Independence celebration. We are set.’

The SSG noted the state government had already initiated activities to mark the October 1 Independence Day Celebration with Jumat and Church services.

“The activities have commenced. Independence Day, October 1, is the climax of it. But, before now, the Jumat service was well attended. On Sunday, the governor of the state led all of us to church to thank God for Independence Day,” he stated.

While appealing to residents to adhere to COVID-19 protocol during the celebrations, urged them to believe in Nigeria and the Rivers State government.

“You can see what the governor is doing. He (Wike) is making sure no effort is spared to give to Rivers people all the promises he has made.

“If you go round Port Harcourt and the entire Rivers State, you will that this is a government that is really geared to ensuring that people have true dividends of democracy.”

FG declares October 1 a public holiday

President Muhammadu Buhari has declared Friday, October 1, as a public holiday to mark the Nation’s 61st Independence Anniversary Celebration.

Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola made the declaration today, on behalf of the Federal Government, congratulating all Nigerians on this year’s celebration, while assuring them of the Government’s commitment to making the country better.

The Minister in a statement by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Dr Shuaib Belgore, expressed that with the presence of COVID-19’s third Delta variant still in place, this year’s celebration will be held quietly.

According to him, “Our warmth, welcoming spirit and love as well as the abundant wealth inherent in our human capital and the richness of our land, make Nigeria unarguably the leading black nation in the world and Africa’s pride and beacon of hope if we can rally ourselves together to harness our potentials.

“A country of about 200 million and above people whose natural talent, grit and passion glitter like the precious DIAMOND that we are. Nigerians are sparkling like diamonds in the pack, whether in Academia, Business, Innovation, Music, Movie, Entertainment, Fashion and culture.

“We are indeed the leading black nation in the entire world and no doubt Africa’s pride and beacon of hope.”

He reminded Nigerians of the strength in togetherness, which he said was portrayed by the founding fathers of the nation, who in spite of their differences in faith, tribe and tongue came together for Nigeria’s independence.

While wishing citizens a fruitful celebration, Argbesola urged them to synergize with the Buhari-led Administration in making Nigeria great.

Police arrest suspect involved in dehumanizing TikTok user

Success Nwanedo

The Edo State Police Command has arrested a suspect involved in the dehumanization of a female victim, who was beaten and stripped for using cult slang in a video she shared on social media.

However, a Human Rights Activist, Harrison Gwamnishu on Tuesday, said he had flown into the state in collaboration with the Police, to apprehend perpetrators involved in the act.

He affirmed that while other suspects were still at large, the Force would stop at nothing to ensuring their arrest.

According to him, “Yesterday, I flew into Edo State and for the rest of the week, we will be mobilizing the security agency to fish out the remaining suspects involved in dehumanizing the TikTok user.

“Don’t ever fight illegality with illegality. Kudos to the Nigeria Police, Department of State Security and Edo State Behind Bars Team for their Swift response.

“To those who warned me to stay clear from this case, dare STOP me on the way and that marks the end of your existence.

“We all must STOP legalizing illegality and stop justifying abnormalities in this unjust system.

Oil and gas companies to relocate to operational bases in the Niger Delta – Senate

The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday initiated moves to ensure that all oil and gas companies in Nigeria, relocate to their operational bases in the Niger Delta.

This decision follows a motion sponsored by Senator Albert Bassey Akpan of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), representing Akwa Ibom North-East senatorial district and co-sponsored by 23 others.

According to Senator Akpan in the motion titled ‘Urgent need to encourage all multinational and Nigerian Oil and Gas Companies to relocate to their Operational Bases’ explained that multinational and Nigerian companies in the oil and gas industry have been operating from their respective operational bases until militancy and insecurity engulfed host communities.

He explained that the high cost of production resulting from operations outside of host communities has drastically affected the maximization of revenue from oil and gas sales.

According to him, “The Senate notes with concern that multinational and Nigerian oil and gas companies have over the years been operating from their respective operational bases until militancy and insecurity in the host communities in the Niger Delta became the order of the day.

“Also notes that the reason proffered by the oil and gas companies for not relocating to their host communities has always been due to insecurity and hostilities in the host communities.

“The Senate is aware that operating outside the host communities and the operational base is the reason for the high cost of production which has been the bane of the country’s oil and gas industry, militating against maximum revenue from crude oil and gas sales to the Federation Account.

“Recall that this high cost of production has been one of the most contentious elements of our petroleum industry value chain.

He noted that the Senate is “Convinced that the recent passage and signing into law of the Petroleum Industry Act, 2021 (PIA) by the National Assembly and the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, respectively, is a major milestone towards the restoration of lasting peace in the host communities.

“Further convinced that the Petroleum Industry Act, 2021 now places certain responsibilities on the security, peace and safety of oil and gas infrastructure on the host communities to safeguard and ensure peaceful co-existence between oil and gas companies and their host communities”.

According to him, the Upper Chamber is “Further convinced that is an opportunity to restore, recover and rehabilitate the massive and huge infrastructural facilities abandoned by the various oil and gas companies in their various operational bases to ensure their full utilization.

“Assured that the relocation of these companies to their host communities will further boost development in those areas and enhance the corporate social relationship and strengthen our collective resolve to considerably reduce the contentious cost of production and ensure adequate returns to the federation account.”

Following the motion, the Senate directed its Committees on Petroleum Resources Upstream; Downstream Petroleum Sector and Gas to liaise with the Ministry of Petroleum Resources and the Presidential Implementation Committee on the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) to facilitate the relocation of the oil and gas companies in Nigeria to their various operational bases to ensure their smooth operations.

The Committees on Upstream; Downstream and Gas are chaired by Senators Muhammed Sabo, All Progressives Congress (APC), Jigawa South-West; Albert Bassey Akpan, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Akwa Ibom North East and James Manager, PDP, Delta South, respectively.
