PDP demands restoration of police security to Rivers covid-19 taskforce

The Peoples Democratic Party has asked the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to restore policemen attached to the Rivers State Task Force on COVID-19 pandemic.

The party said on Tuesday that the withdrawal of policemen from the state task force amounted to playing politics with efforts being made to check the spread of COVID-19 across Nigeria.

The policemen were reportedly withdrawn on human right violation claims.

The withdrawal was not unconnected to the viral video of Governor Nyesom Wike arresting people on the streets and forcing them to a quarantine center.

Wike had been widely criticised for demolishing two hotels in Eleme for allegedly violating the government’s executive order.

PDP in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, in Abuja, noted that the withdrawal of the police personnel from the team will only lead to lawlessness as well as frustrate the genuine efforts of the Rivers State Government to ensure compliance to health safety protocols put in place to check the spread of COVID-19 and safeguard the lives of Nigerians in the state.
