10 die from cholera outbreak in Rivers State

About ten persons have died from a cholera outbreak in Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers.

According to BBC Pidgin, the outbreak began since November and have killed ten persons including children and adults.

Rivers State Ministry of Health confirmed the report but said that a rapid response has been dispatched to the area to curtail the spread of the disease.

Mrs Caroline Wali, Permanent Secretary, of the ministry said that the team has been dispensing drugs that will stop the diarrhoea along with other drugs, infusions and oral rehydration salts.

Nwali added that there has not been any new case since the team was dispatched to the area, adding that they are taking water samples from wells and other sources of drinking water from the community for analysis.

Communities affected by the outbreak include Afradigi, Eyada, Oyorokoto and Ngo which is the mainland community with about 45 communities.

Locals blamed the lack of clean water for the outbreak and urged the government to provide a reliable source of drinking water for the residents of the area.
