As part of measures in tackling accidental discharge, a local vigilante group in Rivers State, OSPAC has banned its members from bearing arms in public places.

The ban came hours after its member, Elemchukwu killed himself via accidental discharge in Ubima Community in Ikwerre LGA of the state.

The victim was said to have boarded a motorbike when his Dane gun exploded and shot him dead.

Confirming the ban to our correspondent, the Secretary-General of OSPAC, Gift Ohia told our correspondent that the ban is aimed at curtailing accidental discharge, especially in public places.

Ohia said, “we don’t want anybody to be a victim of accidental discharge.

“We send our condolences to the family of our colleague who lost his life in Ubima as a result of accidental discharge.

“Only members who are on patrol and those at their duty post will be allowed to bear arms from now on.”

The Secretary-General further hinted that the leadership of OSPAC had ordered the commencement of special training and re-orientation of its members on how to successfully handle arms.

“Let me also use this medium to urge community leaders where OSPAC is operating not to allow another vigilante group to operate there.

“This is because we don’t want a vigilante group to commit crime and blame it on OSPAC.

“It is either we operate as the only vigilante group in such community or we withdraw our services from such community,” Ohia said.
